I gave in to my husband's OWN rule that there would be no sleeping dog in the bed. We gradually loopholed the original rule with she could come up to cuddle in the morning (as she is usually a lazybone until about 10 if we don't have something fun planned immediately for the day). My husband (again...his rule) found a loophole in the loophole and woke up one morning around 5 and let her up.
SO...I gave in after her stick injury since she wasn't feeling herself and let her stay in bed with us ONE night. Well, guess who has been coming and putting her little chin on the bed ever since asking to be let up. And guess who is more than happy to break his own rule (she has got him absolutely wrapped around her paw). I'm obviously not fighting this, but I seem to be the one losing my spot lol.
Guess whose pillows she stole when I got up for two seconds to refill my water glass We're gonna need a bigger bed.

| I made the mistake of allowing Rowdy up on the bed after he spends the night in his kennel. At 6 am every morning he insists on coming on the bed. It's not that I won't discipline him, it's just that I let him up once and now he thinks it's his, but not all the time. I hope you find a balance with your bed and pup lol. |

Yep, i'm definately hearing ye on this one!!
Kintra gradually worked her way onto our bed during the night after approx 2 years of being chucked off during the night (by me - ridiculously light sleeper), but then allowed on after the alarm goes off (i know, it's unfair, mixed signals and all that ). She was so tenacious in her pawing during the night that he just began lifting the covers for her in his sleep.
We then agreed that Keely wouldnt be allowed on the bed at all and by the time she was big enough to get on it by herself it had become apparent that she's a girl with disgusting eating and rolling habits (i dont want to cuddle a neck that's been rubbed in seagull poo, or have fox poo breath in my face) so i was adamant. OH, however, AGAIN, starts letting her up during the night - "s'okay, it was only 20 minutes before the alarm" strange that, it must have been HIS four hairy twitchy claw-ended legs and "exfoliating" paw pads that were poking and scratching me in the back during the night, must also have been him whom i heard jumping off our squeaky bed at 2am to noisily slurp water out of the bowl, it also must have been his black furry bum that let off a massive silent but deadly (stinking ) chuff in my face at 5am.
I dont actually mind her being in the bed really like a lot of others on this forum, what actually bothers me is that generally speaking he gets the cuddly warm furry side against him, but i always get the claws, and she twitches and stretches her legs ALL night Kinda love it though |

Archer & Zoe both sleep in the bed but they have to be completely under the covers near the foot of the bed and next to each other - they could care less about being next to me! They will jump up and nudge the covers for me to lift them and then under they go till the morning.
I snapped this with my iphone - here's an example of how they sleep:

| I used to let the dogs in bed with me after my husband left in the morning for work... but his allergies can't handle it so they aren't allowed anymore, but they are perfectly happy sleeping with my kids... |

Thats awesome, I completely don't blame any of you guys for giving in. They are so clean-fealing and love to snuggle. To not experience it would be a big bummer! One of the few rules we have actually stuck too is that joey isn't allow upstairs in our house. We baby gated the steps when she was a pup and shes been great with it. Its been the cat's respite.
Staying off the couches was a rule that got loopholed big time over 3 years. We sleep with her whenever we travel anywhere, on the couches, and sometimes we have sleepovers with her in our own basement--but shes never been in the bedroom. Its a good size split level so she still has lots of house. |

That picture is too precious. What love bugs! The true reason I was the one trying to hold out on the rule is way more silly than training or discipline. Nighttime was totally and utterly when Georgie (cat) would look forward to because he knew it was his momma time and he didn't have to share me. I didn't want to take that from him, but he is still coming to bed (gives the most displeased look when he sees her though). It may actually be forcing him to see he can be close to her and have no issues. I prefer her at the end of the bed, but hubbs pulls her up and in close everytime and never one to displease us she stays that way all night. Which means (you're spot on werubbertummy) I get the joy of sandpaper feet on my back. And I was warned about GSP gas prior to getting Bella...but, can anyone ever truly be prepared? Phew! |

| I have 4 shorthairs, but really only my boy and my cat sleep with me. I will often have them all in bed when I am watching a movie, but as soon as the lights go out my youngest goes to her crate and my two oldest go get in their dog beds. Ringo will some times go get in his dog bed for a little while, but when I wake up he is always in bed with me. He loves to put his back against me. Once I am up for the day though, the whole pack takes over my bed which is my excuse for not always making it up in the morning. I work from home, so they sleep in mom's bed until they go back outside sometime mid morning. |

Oh boy, TexasBelle, I can't imagine four big boulders in the bed! I have had Bella sleep in her kennel still a couple of nights here and there to insure that she is still willing to do so...and honestly once she is ready for bed I think she could care less where it is. But now, after her last potty for the night she is no longer running straight to her kennel, she is pausing in the hallway to see where I'm going to send her lol. |

| I give in once my husband leaves for work - he leaves 2 hours before I even have to get up for my job. The alarm in my phone on the dresser wakes me up and I see Velvet on the bed sprawled out in his spot, Windsor still snoring in his crate w/ the door open. I get up, go to the dress and then take the phone to bed with me to snooze for another 45 minutes (which is a real bad habit I've developed because I am constantly late to work) and Windsor will wake up around the 3rd time it goes off and jump up onto the bed also but he stays at the bottom or Velvet will pick a fight with him. Two dogs fighting on the bed is no fun - been there, done that! I get up to shower and they stay on the bed sleeping. |

Well, at the beginning...she was still doing some random nights in her kennel just to make sure she stayed "OK" with that as we may have to do that when we visit people or what not. That's gone out the window (as most of our rules seem to be lol). She starts out on the foot of the bed which I prefer, but as I mentioned before my husband pulls her up and in close before he falls asleep where she stays ALL night. I usually wake up to sandpaper feet on my back, her head on my neck, or my personal favorite that occurred this morning...I wake up face to the lethal GSP end. I think I heard the hubbs take a picture which may have been what woke up me, but Bella was completely under the covers except having her butt out like her head should be, and her face down toward the end of the bed. The cat now sleeps behind my head on the pillow usually. He's warming up to the fact that she seems to be a permanent fixture everywhere and making the best. |

We usually go to bed at 10pm precisely during the week and the routine is let Keely out for a pee, open baby gate, Keely goes up and takes over the bed while we get a glass of water, book etc then go up. Well, we stayed up late on Saturday as we didnt plan to get up early for change, but Keely asked to go out for a pee at 10pm exactly. When she came back in we assumed she would jump back onto the sofa - no, she whined to get through the baby gate and went up to bed without us and we have thinking all along that she wanted our company but it was really just our bed she was after all along |

| LOL. Georgie, the cat, is the one that comes and tells me it is bedtime and demands to go. Bella used to go out for her last potty and run directly to her kennel when done. Now she goes directly to the bed and puts her chin on it and waits to be told "up up". Then she finds her spot, does a circle, and plops down with a big sigh of content. |

| My dog will not sleep on our bed. She might jump up onto it, usually to wake me up in the morning to walk her. Other than that, she sleeps on the first floor and seems to like her privacy that way. Although this morning, after my wife left for work, Sadie did come up on the bed on her own. She put her head across my chest and curled up next to me for about ten minutes. That is very unusual. Even when I camp, she will sleep in a corner on her own. I do a lot of October and early November tent camping when the night temps are in the 20's. Even then she won't crawl up on my my air matress where it is much warmer with the chance of getting under the covers for even more warmth. She just seems to like to be away from us when it's time to sleep. |

I sympathize with Sadie, I like my own space when I sleep...which I no longer have Bella actually seems to go from cuddle bug to loner when she is ready to actually sleep for the night, but as I mentioned the hubbs pulls her up in between us from the bottom of the bed...and she stays that way.
Second morning I woke up to her head under the covers and her butt out where her head should be. I hope this doesn't end up her preferred sleep pattern After I woke up the first time I woke up to her completely wrapped snug as a bug in the covers. I don't know how she tucked herself in so tightly.
My husband texted me the second pic. I don't know how to sleep through it.

Mine are not allowed on the furiture or the bed, in fact they are not even allowed up stairs. They have their crates in their own room downstairs next to the kitchen. Don't get me wrong they have a mat in the living room and spend the day and evening in there but they have their own beds for night. TBH i'm a very light sleeper and the slightest move or noise would wake me so i'd never get any sleep with 2 dogs on the bed, or even in the same room. We took Baira camping with us last year and she kept me awake most of the night with her breathing and snuffling and shuffling. She ended up sleeping the car just so I could sleep. I have an estate car (think it's called a station wagon in the US) so plenty of room. I left the windows open for her and she was just fine. Besides, I have horses and the dogs spend alot of time at the stables with me in all the muck and mess, I don't want that in the bed and bathing them every night just isn't feasible. |

I can really sympathise with you on the light sleeping thing - esp just now as it's so muggy over here at the moment, i really struggle with a furry hot water bottle in the bed with us. I actually had to tell her approx 5 times during the night "own bed" but she would come back after 30 mins every time - it's actually really starting to get to me but i'm being outvoted 2:1 unfortunately
Smatulewicz - is that a raccoon that's nearly smothering you in the 2nd photo ? Seriously, i dont know how you can sleep with a dog AND a cat - cats try to get as close to the heat as possible dont they, even if it means blocking your air intake |

Our guys sleep in their crates. Occasionally, they get to come and have a snuggle in bed with me in the morning, but they are complete bed hogs. No way I could get a decent nights sleep with them in the bed. Plus, I find THEY sleep better in their crates. The couple times we've left them out at night, they were constantly patrolling the house and reacting to every noise and car that went by. When they're in their crates, they know they are "off-duty" and they drop off to sleep very quickly. |

I used to be a light sleeper, with a snorer (now TWO...awesome) I am desensitizing. I couldn't imagine battling two for bed space so I'm sure when the day comes to get another we won't be allowing them to sleep in the bed. Hubbs stayed up late the other night and fell asleep on the couch. When I went in to wake him, Bella was fast asleep in her kennel...so at least she is still willing to settle in there. Werubbertummy - I realized when I got up later the racoon's food dish was empty...I think he was attempting to get me up at any means including asphyxiation We are lucky he lets us stay in his home and all. |
