I'm going to try to make this brief

I am an ER nurse, I knew I was going to be working a 24 hour shift so I knew Dex wouldn't get much exercise at home alone with my wife. So my father agreed to take him overnight and then to the river for a long walk. My father has watched him many times before, so I thought it was okay.

I get off work, listen to my voicemail and learn that my father tied dexter into the back of his pickup, drove to the river (.5 miles away to trailhead) Dex jumped out, scraped his nails on the ground (hanging from his leash). We tried this before without the vehicle moving, he jumped out then too. I have stressed this to him on several occasions, but he is my father so he thinks he knows best (he has owned dozens of dogs in his life).

\I picked him up about 4 hours after the incident. I cleaned then dressed the wounds, and he was very calm, but still his happy go lucky self.

Most of them have been scraped pretty bad, not all began to bleed. It just looks like he had a very slopy nail clipping. One claw/nail I am worried about, it is shaved down to his paw.  He will let me touch it, but it seems a small portion of it has broken off from the rest of the nail (which is painful to touch).

He has no other injuries, just the nails.

are there nails similar to ours, and the portion seperated from the base of the nail will eventually die off?  What should I be looking out for? I could take him to the vet if I need to but I would prefer to treat it at home if possible. Any advice?

Thanks,

Jace

Jace - A dogs toenail is very similar to a humans in that it has a quick with the actually nail around the quick or pulpy area. Normally the pulpy area is protected by the actual nail, but if we cut the dogs toenail too short it cuts in the quick and bleeds. I suspect that when Dex jumped out his nails were dragged on the road which acted like a dremel or nail file and filed them down. Most likely there was no blood because the heat of the road on the nail literally cauterized the quick so it did not bleed. I would clean the nails very carefully and look for any of the soft pulpy quick showing. You can rinse the nails with a warm saline solution which should not hurt Dex at all. Then you can examine the toenails. If any of the pulpy area is exposed you should take him to the vet so they can take care of that and bandage his foot and possibly even put him on an antibiotic. Also if there is a broken nail that is hanging that needs to be removed. If Dex will let you you could use a nail clipper to remove it and then again rinse that toenail. Again though if you have exposed quick you need to get it looked at. Also if you cannot remove the broken toenail yourself you need to get it looked at.

Good luck with Dex. Toenail injuries are not that uncommon and they do grow back and heal. However, it may make his foot hurt for a few days. Good luck!! Hopfully your Dad will listen to you now.

I will see if he will allow me to get a picture of that one nail. I will post it here if I can get a decent picture.

The quick appears to be visible, thought I could be mistaken.

He went out for a few minutes for the night and it is now bleeding, still trying to get it to stop bleeding.

More than likely the quick is exposed since it bleeds so easily.  I would clean it and then wrap it.  If you have gauze and vet tape, wrap the foot in the gauze and then wrap the vet tape around the foot and gauze.  If not, then use a clean sock and tape (duct tape works well).  Here is a picture of one of my dogs with her foot wrapped after she broke a toenail down to the foot.  The vet removed it and then wrapped the foot.  You can see how it was wrapped. The white is gauze and the green is the vet wrap.

Hope Dex heals quick! Same thing happened to my old lab years ago. Took him to the vet and he got bandadged on one of his paws. Thank God we were close to home.
