My 1 1/2 year old female GSP has been experiencing excessive tearing and squinting in her right for almost a year now. Her eye will be normal one day and the next she is pawing at it, her eye is squinty and she has tears running down her face. I have taken her several times to her regular vet and have even moved on to an eye specialist.  They have done several stains to see if there is an ulcer, have put her under to explore the eyelids or any eyelashes that may be rubbing. They have also tried flushing her tear ducts which worked for about a day and then it was back.

Nothing has been found and both doctors are at the point of giving up. The eye specialist has suggested getting a second opinion but I am getting very close to broke. The specialist has tried one last thing today, putting one stitch in her lower eyelid to pull it away from the eye to see if this will make a difference. She said that it looked like her lower eyelid rolls and could possibly be irritating her eye.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this with this breed or with any other dog breed? Or any other suggestions? I am beyond frustrated and am not sure what to do next.

Did a little hunting on the net and found this. Some of what you described here sounds a little like what they are describing in this thread.

Disclaimer, I am not a vet nor expert.

Our second dog, a Brittany of seven years had lots of tears running from her eyes when we first adopted her. Once we changed her food, her tears have reduced about fifty percent. Not saying if this is your case, but what we had noticed. Ours however does not squint.

Does she tend to lay on one side when she sleeps? If so, she may be allergic to something where she sleeps. I was thinking maybe cedar if she has cedar chips in her bed. Just something to think about. I was also going to suggest a food allergy, but it is only one eye. Also if she tends to sleep on that side it could also be pushing her eyelashes into her eye. Have they checked for dry eye and to see if she is producing enough tears in that eye?
