I guess a particular food may affect different dogs differently. We have fed Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice exclusively for 10 years. My dogs have lovely coats, solid stools and do well on it. I'm hesitant to switch to another food because this one works so well for us.

Perhaps the Canadian manufacturers didn't change ingredients or get sold to a mega-company. If your dog is doing good on it, then fine. This was my experience, and I too was happy with Nutro (Max first, then Natural) for a time....then came the Ethoxyquin scare (back in the early 90's, and they used it,and that was the beginning of the end of our relationship.

Before my time, Phyllis. We've only used it since 1998! Terra can be picky about food and she loves Nutro. Being a solid liver she looks awful when she's too thin.

Thanks Jodi. I'll look into that food. Did the breeder use it on all of his dogs? I thought they all looked healthy when I went to see them.

Yes, he used that food on all his dogs...  I am not sure which one he used with his adults...but the puppies were all fed the blackwood puppy.  If you call the number on the website they may be able to tell you if you can buy somewhere near you.

I have had very good luck with Purina One. My dogs like it & they are pretty regular with no stomach problems (I could almost set a watch by Daniel's bowel movements ;) ). It is also very affordable. I tried some of the more expensive brands listed here and didn't notice any real difference in the dogs, but definitely noticed a difference in my bank balance!

We tried Purina many years ago and didn't like it to much. But like I said it was YEARS ago. I think it was when my grandmother first started raising Rat Terriers. Probably about 12-15 years ago. After learning about some of the stuff that goes into their food I am leaning more towards the natural stuff. I agree with you about the price. I eat healthy food and I know that my grocery bill is a lot more than most of my friends who are less healthy. I'm noticing that dog food is very similar. I'm going tomorrow to look at a few local places and I'm going to check out that site Jodi. If anyone has any other brands let me know. I appreciate the advice.

I like Diamond High Energy. Good price, dogs like it, and they are healthy.

That's what we use to feed and it worked great!!! I haven't been able to find it down here. I can still get it from back home. I thought about buying a few bags at a time. It's a little over an hour away. Does it seem to help them maintain their weight?

We feed Purina Pro Plan.
The nice thing about it is that it is for all stages and is intended for high energy dogs like GSP's
You can also start your puppies on this stuff and then you don't have the worries of the transition from puppy chow to adult dog food.
When you dog gets old you can then switch to Pro Plan mature formula.
