Time to vent ! The idiot has been shooting all morning ! What a considerate individual. After the first half hour max got antsy. I figure I would make light of it & use it to our advantage to let him know all is alright. I honestly don't know why this is starting to bother max. I hunt with him with no issues. I wonder if times he is left home the jerk is hammering away ? Don't know what it is . Feel better already !!

Could max be picking up on your stress?

Even though I try to appear calm, I find my dogs always mirror my true underlying feelings.

I totally Amen and agree with Weerubbertummy! This guy is a tool and an a**h***! If your dog has no issues hunting with you, maybe he thinks it's hunting time cuz the tool is constantly shooting and that is why he is all antsy.

Do you feel like you can have a discussion w/ him? If not, I'd call the cops as a last resort.

"Time to vent ! The idiot has been shooting all morning ! What a considerate individual."

Its been a while since  Sheena would launch out of bed barking at 2 or 3 am.  because "One"engineering  brother of a rental/ fraternity who lived next door would set off firecrakers  almost every night.   I did call the law enforcement and they did show up at their door. Unfortunately you have to catch them in the act . It continued once or twice a week.   I didn't have much recourse .I just learned to not let it bother me.

You might try this approach . Start up a friendly conversation about  guns  ( Big very loud ones)  some weekend and then mention this.

Max is having   angziety every time  he hears you shoot for a long time. I can distract him some but have  no way of knowing if you are shooting when he is alone and am not around to distract him.  This has me worried.  Do you have any suggestions on what I can do for Max?  And be completely  sincere sounding that the problem Is all Max and not Him. That way he won't be put on the defensive.

I wish I took that approach with the fire crackers.

Well fact is I tried to be neighborly. I asked last year if he intended to shoot let me know & I would be happy to leave for a while. After this past weekend's shootfest I once again extended a neighborly hand to say "hey you know I asked you once " what do you think ? This is how it went . He answers the door a little aggitated. beer in one hand side arm on his hip. Then he starts in how it wasn't him it was his friends( nice guy) All the while I am saying look you can shoot how about just give me a little heads up . His response was " i don't have to call you" I knew at this point I was talking to a drunk. I must say as I walked away I peeked over my shoulder to see if he was drawing a beed on me. Scary stuff ! This is a condenced version to much to write. I will just stay my distance from the guy & when he starts shooting ........ I will go fishing or hiking or something. Be glad you don't have one of these for a neighbor.

It could be worse -

he could also have a pen of beagles.

I’m not sure you should have said “hey I asked you once before” line. I may have used a little more tact. I’ve seen the type of person you’re dealing with, and I don’t envy your situation. Because he acted that way, I’d be keeping your eye out to call the cops whenever possible on him. Sounds like you’ve exhausted every other option, and it may be the only way to get your point across at this point. Good luck to you.

Have you ever seen the Richard Pryor movie "Moving"?

I think you will be to relate.

A drunk with a gun, sweet! Seriously, he keeps at it you can call the cops and tell them you tried to talk to him but he was too wasted and you were afraid he was gonna pop you one because you weren't sure he was aware that he had his sidearm on him he was so toasted.

So he's a school teacher?
How about inviting some parents, PTA members, admistrators over to your house for a bbq or drinks, etc when he will likley be shooting?

Fantastic......expose him and humiliate him - the best way to teach a lesson! Remind me to never get on the wrong side of Terra's Owner

Uh, I don't know about that idea.

Mess with someone's job/money and you could find yourself in an unhappy place.

When the school folks come over and ask what all that noise is, just say nonchalontly (spelling?) "that is just Mr Smith, the 8th grade science teacher drinking beer and shooting his guns. Max just loves it!" all the while Max is going bonkers with fear.

Well, if you had kids in school, would you want a drunk, survivalist type who shoots off guns all the time at his home teaching your kids?
Target practice is one thing, being drunk and shooting all the time is another.

I'm not against guns, properly and safely handled, but what responsible person walks around the house with a sidearm on while drinking beer?
He could just trip over something wihile tipsy and the gun could go off and hit himself. It isn't even safe for him, let alone neighbors.

Of course, we can only hope.....

People like that don't require our energy.
There's nothing you can do and anything you would do would back fire.
Only thing is to get even - you don't sound like the get even type.

I can bet he makes even more noise b/c you DID speak to him about it.
Personally, I would have never gone to him - only added fuel to the fire.
In fact, we don't go over to our neighbors who behave the same as yours.
Ignore and hope it goes away soon.
