I have a neighbor that likes to shoot big guns & in the past couple years max has grown not to fond of this. I am affraid it will make him gun shy. I have asked the guy to please let me know when he plans on hammering for hours so I can leave during this period. I don't dare let him know it bothers max for fear he will do it more. I try to get max out and make light of this but it does seems to bother him. I have told the neighbor flat out that it bothers me but he knows he is within his legal right to shoot. Sport shooting is one thing but rapid fire big guns just make noise ! |

Now, that is a problem. Apparently he doesn't care how it bothers others and animals. Not knowing where you live and how populated it is, only thing I would suggest is reporting it to the authorities. Do the have any kind of noise restrictions in the area. This would be upsetting to me even if I didn't have a dog. |

| Sounds like there is enough property where it's legal to shoot. Someone down the road from us shoots but not a bunch but both dogs hear it and it gets them going but it's not enough to make them dislike it. I don't think you should have to leave your property because of what someone else is doing. Only thing I could think of is it being a noise disturbance like Nancy said. I'm all for guns and shooting but I wouldn't do it on and on knowing it bugs my neighbors. We have some idiot that likes to shoot off M80's in the summer. I LOVE fireworks but not on a week night at 10 p.m. Hope he decides to curb it a bit to be courteous to others around him. |

| I doubt it will hurt Max with a shotgun for hunting because it is a bit different. I have dogs that hate fireworks, but are fine with hunting. In any case about the best you can do if the other suggestions don't work is try loud music or TV, try a Thunder Shirt, or give Max a benadryl or use something like Rescue Remedy. |

| I wouldn't fret too much over it cuz it could encourage unwanted behavior from Max... just ignore it... the more upset you get by it the more Max will too... |

How close is he shooting? You can't shoot within 500 feet of homes? Must be a wealthy gut to shoot high power rifles for hours! Close the windows, turn on the a/c,turn up the TV/radio and Max will be fine. Neighbors from hell are delightful - aren't they? |

I don't want to invlove the authority's. ( could make matters worse) My fear is with summer coming on & the guy is a school teacher so he has off all summer. Max though with me most of the time will have to stay home by himself at times. Max like "all" shorthairs is a smart little dog & he will be pacing wondering what all the shooting is about. I was hopping for little trick's or thing's others might do with a similar problem. The shooting is about 1200 ft away. The rounds are I am sure the bulk crap they sell. All they do is make noise I hope he out grows it ! They also shoot these exploding target's they buy at gander mt. the first time they did it I ran out the door & looked in their directions in fear they may have blown themselves up only to hear the next day from another neighbor who thought the same thing what it actually was. Maybe my worries are for nothing but I only hope that this is not going to be a long summer ......... |

| It doesn't seem right that getting the authorities involved would make matters worse. I don't like authority but if this guy is a bully and you fear for your property then by all means call the authorities - that is what they are paid to do since, unfortunately, we can't defend ourselves w/out getting sued by the perpetrators - at least in CT that is how life is. Blow themselves up? Maybe that's a good idea! LOL! |

Unfortunetly the guy is 100 % with in his legal rights here in NY. Sure I could call the DEC or police & they would come but there would be little they could do. It may make the guy shoot more often out of spite. Sooner or later it will catch up to him as I am sure I am not the only person he annoys. I also wouldn't call him a bully but have a better word for him........ can't post it on here though Ultimately the guy has no class

| I know that if I was well within my rights to shoot, I would still consider my neighbors peace and quiet. You are a much better person than me. I would figure out a way to mess with him lol. |

I have neighbors that shoot most of the day opening day of bow season.
What can you do?
Hope they spook the deer our way!!!
Not much you can do. You've reached out in a neighborly, gentlemanly, respectful way and you were blown off.
I find that people get bored - but it takes a season.
Soooo, bite your tongue, turn up the tv and deal with it.
Could be worse - not sure how but let's try and look on the bright side.
Actually, I'm surprised Max just doesn't ignore it by now.
My dogs get inquisitive then acceptance sets in.
or you could put sugar in his gas tank
oh,just kidding

| It is the crack of the rifle/handguns. It takes a little while then he gets antsy. Walks around wines a little then he is glued to me. It stink's ! On the up side the other day walking one of our tote roads while they were shooting a robin landed on the road just ahead of us & the site of the flying object made him snap out of the "hey whats all the noise I can't identify mode". & point the landed bird . I think his behavior change comes from a bad experience while kenneled once . Another story for another day ! |

I know you said that you talked to him about just giving you a little warning. Maybe if you join him for a shoot sometime while he’s out there you might be able at some point to have a conversation with him about your situation. Ask if he could at the very lease just send you a text message so that you could have a heads up. Just a thought anyways… If that doesn’t work, do a little shooting of your own, or turn one of those electric animal callers on to a high volume (I’m thinking the injured rabbit or crow call). Perhaps when he’s outside having a BBQ or something. Not that 2 wrongs make a right, but it could make you feel a bit better ;-) I also agree about not getting the authorities involved. Neighbors should be able to be neighborly, and authorities should only be used for emergency purpose’s. Good luck! |

I would get a louder sounding gun than he has and shoot it in the early morning or late at night.

What is that saying if you can't beat them join them?
I know what its like to live in fear of rocking the boat because they might ingnor you or delight in your discomfort.
.Maybe a little of his own behavior at a time that might bother him might get him to think a bit.
I'm having trouble with wealthy nieghbors in a gated community not obeying the leash law and my new clients lawn I worked so hard on to renovate this spring is now covered with burn spots .
Every week I mow there are new ones . Nice way to piss someone off. eh!

| I am not looking to spite the guy myself but rather find another way to snap max out of the ( "what's all the noise mode" ) As long as we play fetch or hide & seek & I can distract him he is good. We do a lot of training while they are shooting but I worry when I leave & max is alone & how he will deal with it . As far as shooting with the guy I am very selective about people who I want to be around when it comes to guns & just his shooting practice tells me stay away. |

| What if you bought a starter pistol to get him used to the noise? And shoot it off often and even sometimes at 3 am. Then when the cops come after you wake up the neighbor you just deny and say you heard the same noise and thought was your neighbor cuz he shoots constantly. |

| Time to vent ! The idiot has been shooting all morning ! What a considerate individual. After the first half hour max got antsy. I figure I would make light of it & use it to our advantage to let him know all is alright. I honestly don't know why this is starting to bother max. I hunt with him with no issues. I wonder if times he is left home the jerk is hammering away ? Don't know what it is . Feel better already !! |

Could you chap his door and say "gee, thanks! You've actually cured my dog's gun shyness by doing that!" - if he is doing it to be an a***h*** he might lose interest and cut down a little! If he's not doing it to be an a***h***, is there any way that you could find a way for Max to witness where the noise is coming from and stay near to it, gradually getting farther away, in the hope that he will desensitize to THAT particular gun noise?
Is it also maybe worth trying to anticipate when the t***** is going to be shooting and film Max while you're absent? Maybe you're worrying about nothing and he's only agitated about the noise while you're there cos he makes a connection with the noise and hunting with you.
Disclaimer: i know nothing about guns or gun-shyness, but i do know about crappy, insensitive neighbours and really sympathise with you cos your home is supposed to be the place where you and your dog can relax. Good luck (and what a tool your neighbour is - makes me really appreciate our gun laws!).
