Ok, as I mentioned in my first post, Lilly has "kennel Cough", something I have never had experience with. She is on an antibiotic 2x daily and a cough/sinus med as needed or about 2-3x daily. Her last meal was Friday and she hasn't eaten since. I have tried everything even: bacon, Satin Balls, dog food, hot dogs and lunch meat. She only occasionally drinks water. She is still somewhat active, likes walks but not much more than that. She sleeps alot and when not out on a walk is laying down. Her jaws are still strong so I wouldnt call her week.
So should I just wait till shes ready to start eating again or try something else (suggestions?) or get her back to Vet.
This illness is totally new to me and from what I've read is hard on the dog.
Any ideas, thoughs or help much appreciated. |

I have been through Kennel Cough many times, but don't recall any of them not
eating. What type of cough med are you giving. I've always been told to use only
children's Robitussin for cough only nothing else. Did your vet suggest the cough/sinus
med? Most cases will clear with no meds in 2-4 wks. Of course you always want to
stay on top of it so it doesn't go into pneumonia.
It could be that either the script or cough med is upsetting her stomach. Do her gums
look normal. I'm sure, at this point, I'd be talking with the vet again.

Yeah, meds not marked as to medication name, just antibotic and cough supression. I'm going to watch her closely today and if dramtic change I'll find emergency Vet today, if not I'll run her in tomorrow. She get 10 days free vet attention from shelter but I'll take her to my regular vet. |

| make sure she stays hydrated and I would get her into the vet...not eating since friday is quite a bit of time to not be eating... |

| Have you tried boiled chicken and rice? I suspect the meds are upsetting her tummy. Also, if you are worried and she is still drinking a bit you can try a broth or Pedialyte. The most important thing is to keep her hydrated. They can survive not eating for a while, but not dehydration. |

Ok back from Vet, not good with antibiotics only 30% with hosp and IV, 50%.
Vet called it "a perfect storm" of issues from weight, infection(s), etc. Wildcard is that maybe distemper as well and without any background info big maybe on shot or it in her past.
However, I think that given she is purebred with a docked tail there is a good chance she has had the shot.
So I am force feeding her small amounts of baby food (meat), some plain yogurt and giving her water. The Vet gave her a large pill/dose of different antibiotic and new prescription to start tomorrow as well as a shot.
I'm not giving up!!!! |

| the water is most important and staying hydrated...my concern with not eating was that going that long and without interest something was going on...like bev said they can survive awhile without eating, but need water... so don't feel you have to force feed just stay hydrated... |

We took in a rescue from a pound a couple years ago and she had HORRRRRRIBBBLEE kennel cough. It was almost full onset pneumonia. She went through about a week of not eating. We went and got Vita Cal from Petco or Petsmart. It is a high calorie paste and along with that and keeping her hydrated she pulled through just fine. Good luck we will keep you in our thoughts.

OK so she won't drink on her own so I am using a large syringe to give her small amounts of water slowly. I'll get some of the VitaCal tomorrow.
Man this sucks. |

Yeah, 5 min after giving her water with syringe, Lilly got up on her own and went and drank water, a good amount of it!
she hasn't gotten up in about 5hrs so maybe just maybe! |

One thing I have learned is that really stinky food is best when they are sick. I have read they don't taste much but of course their noses lead the way. You might try tripe, or liverwurst other strongly scented wet food to stimulate her appetite.
So glad that she had a drink of water on her own.
Come on sweet girl you are in a good place now with someone who really wants you to win this battle! |

Hadn't heard about the stinky foods, I'll give a try when we get to that, for now I'm thinking I'll focus efforts on hydration.

Well after giver Lilly water with syringe last night she drank from bowl before bedtime. She slept in bed with us all night and most of the congestion and snotty nose seem to have run it's course. She is breathing heavy but not labored or congested.
This am I gave her more water with syringe and she got up on her own and got out of bed and drank lots of water. I also got a table spoon of baby food in her. Going today to get her some chicken/meat broth and Vita Cal. While the focus is on hydration I think getting some protein, even in small amounts will be helpful till she starts eating on her own.
Thanks to everyone and your suggestions I seem to have gotten something from everyone and it has all been helpful!

Scrambled eggs, french toast, those vienna sausages, macaroni and cheese...any of these are good for picky, finicky appetites. Hang in there and keep hydrating... Its so important! Let us know how she's doing!

Great news, I think we have truly turned the corner!
This afternoon, after I had just given her one of her syringe/water doses, Lilly got up off the bed and went and drank on her own again. She then went to the couch and JUMPED up then laid down.
About an hour later I asked her if she wanted to go outside, she slowly got off couch and went to door. We then walked for a bit, she pot-tied and when I turned to go back in, she went the opposite way to the Dog Park. So went there and she laid down for a bit then walked home, stopping to smell things and was reactive various noises. She is still wobbly but she made home, got more water then back on the couch where she is napping.
She is also a lot more alert and wags tail when talked to by the wife and kids. Not me though, I'm still the bad guy as I have been the one prying open her mouth and forcing pills down her throat, making her drink etc. LOL hopefully she gets over it.
