Sadie will be 2 years old on June 3.  I'd wouldn't be telling you the truth if I said she doesn't stress me out sometimes.  She is non stop, all the time!  She finally settles down about 9-10 pm and will sleep until about 7am without a problem. But watch out after that because her battery is recharged and she's ready to go.  I'm retired, 50 years old and active, so I have plenty of time to walk her, take her for swim, etc.  I take her with me on every walk, usually three times a day.  We have a throw toy that she loves to fetch and it goes on almost every walk, so in addition to the walk, she runs after that after I throw it dozens of times.  Now that summer is here, we will take her to Lake Superior to run on the beach and swim. She is always in the yard with me when I am outside, but nothing seems to tire her out.  I know she gets tired, but will not sit or lay down for what appears to me as if she is afraid she will miss something.  My wife and I have actually seen her fall asleep on her feet.  She does have a 25' x 30' outside kennel we put her in from time to time and that is the only time she will lie down.  We bought enough fencing to build it this big thinking she would run around inside and tire herself out some, but she doesn't.  All she does is lie down in there, but the minute you take her out, run, run, run. I also have a 60 cable tie-out where we put her sometimes.  Same thought there, that she would run back and forth and exercise herself.  Nope!  The ironic part about all this, is when I have her in the yard with me, she will take one of her toys and run and play with it on her own.  She will do this for as long as you let her, but put her on her tie out or in her kennel with the same space to run and the same toy... nothing.  She's a great dog, but she is wearing me out.  If she is in the house she is always pacing and going to the door, then back to us and then to the door.  This is to encourage us to take her out.  Guess I'm just venting now.  Anyone else have this problem... the dog that can never get enough exercise?

I used to have a dog like that, then i learned some things, and he has matured some. Although his 'off-button' is still not reliable in exciting situations (like we have a house guest, lol)
First of all, try to alter your belief that it is an inability to exhaust her, it is a lack of off-button. Some dogs come with one, some don't.
I learned to use the crate to determine 'off' time and to create a sense of sanity for us. I no longer need it, he has finally learned that we get up, have breakfast, and exercise then it's work time for me ( I work at home).
At other times when he would get too wound up I would crate him and he would sleep instantly. If I hadn't crated him he would have kept going & going & going
So decide when it's quiet time and crate train her until she learns that it's quiet time.

Next start doing short training sessions with her when she is looking for attention. I use clicker training for this, just free-shaping stuff. I might just do 5 minutes or less but I challenge him mentally.
That was a huge turning point for us, physically he was impossible to exhaust to the point he'd stop and settle BUT doing obedience work or free-shaping for a bit and he'd settle.

Now at 7 he will settle but still has moments of hyperactivity that we have to manage. Hang in there, change your mindset on managing her energy and you'll get some peace and she'll be less frenetic

Sounds like my Striker... he is constantly on the go all day long... and the thing is he wants us on the go with him too... we have a huge yard that is fenced in so we will let him out and he will run a lap, knock on the door to come in because we didn't go out with him, let him in he goes to the front window and looks out, then goes to the back door knocks to be let out, we let him out and he runs his lap and ask to come back in...if you don't let him in he starts barking which I don't like cuz it annoys the neighbors (and me)...after doing this about 10 times i get mad and tell him to go to his kennel for time out...we used to have cages for the dogs so that is where he would go but now kennel just means he has to find a place (usually the couch) to lay down...

I think your dog has associated his outdoor run with his time out relaxing spot which is fine when you want her to chill out and not bother you there is nothing wrong with putting her out there...

Now if me or my husband goes outside to work in the yard Striker will constantly be in motion running laps, jumping in the dog pool, sometimes brings us stuff to throw, but he keeps himself busy and active while we are out there...Our other GSP Blitz is more relaxed, he will do his lap of the yard and then go stand at the squirrel tree for hours and stare, then he gets bored and finds somewhere to lay down and sun bath (he does this whether we are outside or not)....

These dogs are known as velcro dogs which doesn't mean they have separation anxiety but they love to be with their people and when we are out with them they are happy!

PS next time we get up to the UP next summer possibly we have got the get the dogs together!

Gunner was (and still to some extent still is) like that too... Though a walk or a run at the park does tire him out and he will take a nap in my bed. But he for sure does not lay down outside! Always after something! He turned two in April and these last few months I've noticed he's settled down a bit - getting a bit mature I suppose and just generally being a better dog inside and outside of the house.

Nothing more to add except routines help too. If you want some down time build that into a routine so Sadie expects it. They thrive under routines and it sounds like you have built a routine around allot of activity and she knows it. You can't tire them out physically, so work on the mental too. Good luck!

Dax can be the same way sometimes....if he has an exciting or exercise filled day, he just seems to sleep harder at night. Gotta love em :)

I find myself saying often to people who always feel the need to point out to me that my GSP is a high energy dog, that YES, yes she is. But lucky for us, for her it isn't in the sense that she is demanding to go all day long - so much as it is if the need to go all day long is there...she will.

If we are going, she must be going to. She won't dare miss out on anything. She refuses to rest in the yard if I'm doing yard work because she has to be on chippy alert, catch any rogue leaves that blow by, and make sure no bugs get by her. She typically comes home from the woods with cuts on her undercarriage because she turns into a deer in the woods, a mountain goat on rocks...

But when we slow, and she understands that she can turn off boy does she CRASH. She goes to bed usually around 11:30 and I get her up at 8. Her last potty outting she knows it's bedtime, she comes in and runs straight to her kennel. And lately, since she is on the go more I just open her kennel door at 8 and she doesn't wander out until about fifteen minutes later.

Our female is like that. She runs in circles all day long....in the house, in the yard and in the pen. She quiets down as soon as the sun sets. Our male is happy to be lazy most of the day but at night he is very energetic until someone goes to bed. Then he will go in his kennel. When it is nice and we go to work, both go in the pen. Windsor will lounge most of the time and Velvet will run in circles. Bad weather they both stay in but she gets kenneled as she is too spazzy. She is great on walksbut he is a big time puller. Both very different personalities unless they are playing with eachother......then it is all out mayhem:-)

My older GSP never stops moving either. For instance this morning she wakes up and I put her out of the bedroom and close the door as I was not ready to get up.  I can hear her making circles around the dining table the whole time.  The only time that I get peace from this is if she has a chew and no one in the house is outside or heading to the door to go outside, or if she is crated in the car or at an agility trial.  Funny that when she is in her crate at a trial, she is all relaxed in her crate until you open the door!

I agree that a routine is best.  She knows they get to do something early in the morning and then once again when I get home from work.  And of course, I do go to training class at least twice a week, so then she gets a little extra work and attention from me.  So she is better, never really stops moving during the day, but it is more subdued as I think that she is as patient as she is going to get until its her time to play.
