Got this from a gal on one of the other dog boards I'm on. Just passing it on.
In my opinion, Trifexis is too new to experiment on my dogs. You may never have any problems, but
This just texted to PK Lichtenberger from a friend:
Fwd: hey...whatever you do...DON'T GIVE YOUR DOGS TRIFEXIS. HEARTWORM MED...jack is in the hospital..we tried trifexis for the first time yesterday (his interceptor has been off the market). and by 8 pm symptoms started...I had to take him in at 7 am..lethargy..confusion..tremors with a twitch every 15 seconds..no appetite..he looks like he's on an acid trip..his gut is drawn up...all symptomatic of poisoning..vet called company ...they admit some problems..will pay for blood panels on internal organs for toxicity reports but won't pay for rest of treatment...so many people will be trying this drug due to not being able to get the discontinued interceptor or sentinel...tell all your dog friends... NO TRIFEXIS...EVER ! |

| Thanks for the warning - we have it available over here too, and with our milder winter this year heartworm may become a risk to us up north too. I know that side effects are an "acceptable" risk to drug companies that's no comfort to those who suffer. Please keep us updated on Jack. |

There was a question posed on another board I frequent - here's the link to the thread
Trifexis has the same meds in it as Interceptor and Comfortis - it is not to be given to certain herding breeds (Interceptor) or to seizure dogs.

I've given the Trifexis to Archer & Zoe twice now and they have not had any ill effects from it. I use a mobile vet here in NC and I had emailed them because I was out of the Interceptor and had asked about my options and he is the one that suggested the Trifexis. This was his response to me "Ok, the Interceptor and Sentinel are on back order for atleast 6 months. They do have a fairly new product called Trifexis that has been out for about 1 year. It is the hw and flea combined. It is cheaper than doing Interceptor/Frontline. It is a combination of Interceptor/Comfortis. Plus, they are offering a $10 rebate for every 6 m supply purchased". |

| I was terrified to use Trifexis when it was first introduced due to the research. I have 3 dogs who have been on Trifexis now for 6 months, and not one of them has had a problem. Our Lab has seizures, so she is not a candidate for Trifexis. However, our double white merle Aussie/britanny mix with history of immune issues is doing well on it. The most common side effect is vomiting, and not one of our dogs has experienced even that.....knock on wood. I know that each time I give it, I hold my breath and pray. Just because they have been okay in the past, doesn't mean they can't develop something. I hope Jack has recovered with no long lasting issues. I know a reassurance from one person doesn't in anyway lesson the experience that Jack, and other dogs have experienced. I did speak to our vet regarding the numerous complaints and severe problems that I had read about. She assured me that all 3 of her dog's were on it, and have been fine. I figured it wouldn't hurt to try. I read that those that experienced issues usually bounced back with no long term deficit. Still, it's scary......the stuff smells like pesticide. It's horrible. |

When Interceptor became unavailable I called our vet back in Florida and asked what they were using in it's place and they recommended Trifexis. We happen to to take Cassie to our new vet in NC for her routine blood work for her Addisons and she wanted our dogs on Heartgard Plus and the topical Frontline Plus for the fleas and ticks. She doesn't like the oral flea medications and the Frontline Plus seems to be working just fine. We don't need the Preventic collars anymore. They all have had no ill effects from either and we've been using them for 6 months now. |

@cooperdog Hi. I will be the last person to contradict what a vet says, however, I just want to let you know that all 4 of our dogs were on heartguard and one of them got heartworm......3 times! The first time we treated it, the rest of the time we continued heartgaurd. I have since heard from several people that there have been breakthru's with heartguard. Do an internet search. My breeder and my vet confirmed they have seen and heard this. We switched from the heartguard and frontline (frontline did NOT work for ANY of our four! I think it's the TEXAS fleas!) It used to work great, but the last couple of years we haven't had the same amount of luck. All 4 of mine are on Trifexis and with no side effects.....thank goodness. I was TERRIFIED to try the Trifexis. Had my Chocolate lab not tested positive KNOWING that I gave the medicine FAITHFULLY and ON TIME, and knowing that she wasn't throwing the pill up, etc., I new we couldn't stay on Heartguard. My next choice was Advantage plus. Our vet quit carrying both Sentinel and Advantage plus......pretty much leaving us with one option that sounded reasonable. I'm not trying to persuade or influence your decision, or to go against your vet at all... Just encouraging research. If Heartguard works for you, that's wonderful! |

I had not heard that about heartgard, but I too am using Trifexus on all four of my dogs, two GSPs, a lab and a border collie. I have had no issues now going on 4 months.

Yes, therozypozy. We are also using Trifexus on our Aussie/Brittany mix. Experts warn against using it on cattledogs of the shepherd/collie breed, however, our mix has not been affected in any way. If you google the heartguard breakthru, you should be able to find something. I did, just don't remember where! |

| Correction. I said all 4 of our dogs are on Trifexis.....I don't use it on my black lab. She has a strong hx of seizures on a regular basis. You cannot use Trifexis if there is any hx of seizures. I continued her on the heartguard and use Advantage K9 for her fleas, etc. Sorry....only 3 of my dogs are on Trifexis. The black lab has never tested heartworm positive so, it seems to be working for her. Also, she is almost 13 years old and NEVER goes outside except to do her thing. She is an English lab and her coat is amazingly course and thick. This helps protect her I'm sure. Only 1 of my dogs ever had the breakthru with heartguard, so it worked on 75% of my dogs! I think the breakthru is rare, but it is prevalent. We switched to Trifexis ONLY because it is an all in one pill and it is effective.....You are right though, it is NEW, and that in and of itself is quite scary. The pill really, really stinks. It smells like pesticides. |
