Sorry it’s been a while for an update. I’ve been super busy with work and trying to keep Dexter in a calm mood so he doesn’t damage any work that had been done.

Surgery went well, the vet is saying that it’s going to be a little before he’s back up to his self again. There’s also the chance that the surgery might not work because the kneecap is so small and they might have to remove the small pice that broke. I’m really hoping for the best on this one, because I can’t afford another $1200 surgery, but I guess that’s a decision that hopefully never comes.

He’s had to get re-bandaged 3 times as he kept chewing at them. He had his cone on the whole time too. Last time I went in I requested a larger cone which seems to be working, but they took him out of his bandage that same day so I’m not sure it mattered anymore (something they should have done the first time they had to change the bandage). So now they have him on just one painkiller and 2 doses of ACE which really have been helping knock him out which has made things easier the last few days.

Had a bit of a scare last night with him as I noticed that there was some blood in his poop. I called the vet and they said to wait a day to see if it clears because it could be the meds. His poop was clear of blood this morning so I’m thinking things should be fine.

He goes back in next Wednesday for one of his follow ups and x-rays. Here’s to hoping for good results!

Thanks for all your support guys/gals!

Keeping my fingers crossed and praying that this one works and in a few months this will be just a memory. Give Dex a big hug from his friends in TX.

Keep your eye on the poop, Bugsy had that from Rimadyl, in his case it was clearly fresh blood on the outside of the stool. I was told that meant the last part of his GI was bleeding. That is much better than bleeding higher up (stool will be dark) or liver issues. NSAIDS can be real tough on some dogs, dangerously tough so just keep your eye on it. Obviously many dogs have no issues!

Sending my best smooth & complete healing vibes for Dex. Poor guy and hang in there, soon enough he'll be running & romping again.

Thanks guys. He’s been a real champ through this whole thing. His stool is still looking good, just a little softer than normal, but still seeing no blood. He’s off the Rimadyl now, he took his last on the day I noticed the blood, so I’m assuming that was what caused it.

I found out last night that my roommate had been letting Dexter out during the day, which was very thoughtful of him, but he had been using the exercise line that I have that allows Dexter to run and play. Huge no no because of the healing and needed down time. I tried to tell him before that it was cool that he let him out, but that he has to be on the leash so he doesn’t run or jump. I’m really hoping that none of that affected his healing time or the surgery its self.

So far he seems to be doing well. As I said before, he’s off the bandage now, but is still limping around and he walks on it, but he’s still really favoring it. I’m hoping it’s just time that’s needed. I understand that he just had surgery just under 2 weeks ago. I guess I find out next Wednesday when we go back to the vet.

Thanks for all your support!

Dexter had his first follow up last night. So far the Doc say’s that everything is looking good! A little swelling, but that’s supposed to be normal. So that’s good news. Also I figured out that putting the meds in a ball of cheese really helps to get the meds down, but for some reason he can tell the one I put the painkiller in and chews it apart and spits it out. Smart little stinker. He’s been doing a pretty good job with staying down, but now has developed a strange (well not really strange because he’s a dog) obsession with sandals… We lost 2 pairs last night due to taking our eyes off him. DOH.

He gets X-rays in 2 weeks.

Try putting the pill in peanut butter. I have one that does the same thing knowing which bit of food has the pill, but the peanut butter seems to work with her. Glad Dex's check up was good.

Glad the check-up went well.
I toss the food wrapped pills so he has to catch them and he doesn't have a chance to take the pill out.
he will take a pill out of anything you wrap it in if you just give it to him

kpwlee - I tried that with Halo, but she always knew which piece had the pill and would spit the pill back out. For her the peanut butter worked. Now my male, will eat anything, even pills, because he is so food/treat motivated.

They may have met while we were in WI. I bet they went out parrying when we went to dinner one night. After all the RVd were parked pretty close together. LOL

Bev Bugsy spews out all pills that aren't thrown to him, he loves peanut butter but no pill would get in him using that method.
I make a few 'meatballs', 1 has the pill. He loves the catch game so it works every time. Of course his mouth is nearly as large as a hippo's hahahahaha

I tried the peanut butter trick... No go for Dex. Almost like he knew what was up right away, and now he's starting to figure out the cheese trick. Darn me for having a smart dog.

Thanks! I think he might actually be making some progress. He seems to be laying on his injured leg a little more (which I try not to let him do) so I’m assuming that it means that it’s starting to feel a little better, but sometimes he seems like he’s limping a little more, but that could be from being a little stiff from not using it so much.

I now have it worked out with the pills. I have to use single sliced cheese fold the pills to the center and mash it into a ball. After that I just give it a roll on the floor and tell him to get it. Seems to be working the best so far and has made it a lot easier on me seeing as I don’t have to shove them down the throat and Dexter isn’t fighting me on it anymore.

Looks like I find out tonight to see how Dexter is doing with his knee. So I’ll be able to give you all an update in the morning seeing as I don’t use a computer at home because I’m on it all day at work. I’m sure some of you can relate.

To me he seems like he’s doing a lot better. As I said before he’s laying on it a lot more, and he starting to pull a little more. I still correct him to stop pulling. The only time that it looks like it bugs him now is when he’s standing, pointing at something, or after he gets up after lying for a while. He tends to lift it up slightly when he’s standing still.

Thanks everyone for your support! I hope it’s good news tonight!
