Hey everyone!
my puppy Cash is doing great around the house and in training. I just have a few random and pretty unrelated questions that I would like some opinions on. They are all pretty general, just a few things i've been wondering, and anything you can add to the conversation would be greatly appreciated. So here goes it:
1. What do you prefer to use as treats for training?
Obviously there are a lot of factors to the best treat, including the individual personality of the dog, but Cash is highly food motivated and not very picky. For the first month, I was just using individual pieces of his food as treats, and that worked wonderfully. He still enjoys his food, but became completely uninterested in it as a training reward. I have been experimenting, but I'm sure others have as well and can help me along on my search.
2. My puppy is a UABR puppy because that's what his parents are (also, i believe the AKC classifies black GSPs as a mixbreed) What are the implications of this? I have tried researching this but have not found very much info. I am pretty clueless to this aspect owning dogs, so any info you can throw my way is probably new info and much appreciated.
3. What do you expect from your puppies at 4 months, 6 months, 8 months, 1 year, etc.?
Again I know that every dog is different and not to compare my dog too much to others, but I am just curious. Basically, what kind of expectations do you have from your dog at different ages?
thanks everyone! |

1. What do you prefer to use as treats for training? I make my own treats for training using liver, and I use those treats only for training. I have the recipe on my website along with several other dog recipes. Their favorite is Moc's Liver Treats, but they also really like the banana bites too. With the liver treats I use chicken liver instead of beef because one of my dogs is allergic to beef and also the chicken livers work better in the blender. I also add different things to the batter like peanut butter, molasses, carrots, etc. The treats make a brownie like treat, and they make quite a few so I freeze them and get out only what I need and thaw them in the microwave. Any leftovers go back in the freezer. The nice thing about making your own treats is you know what is in them. I also use the frozen cooked fajita meat that you can find in the grocery store freezer section. I use that as bait when I show my youngest in conformation. My dogs consider the fajita meat a very high value treat. 2. The black GSPs are not classified as mixed breed in AKC. They are considered pure bred just like the liver GSPs. The issue with black in the AKC is that based on the standard it is a disqualification in the conformation ring only. In all other performance venues there are no issues with black GSPs. We have tried several times to get the standard (which is owned by the GSP Club of America) changed, but so far it has not passed the voting (although it came close last time it was up for a vote). I also think they may be trying to get it on the ballot again this year for a vote. You have to be a member of the parent club to vote on the change and it requires a 2/3 majority (I believe it got a simple majority in the last vote). I am not familiar with the UABR registry. The ones I am familiar with are the United Kennel Club (UKC) which does allow black GSPs in the ring, and the IABCA (International). I show my dogs in AKC, UKC and IABCA. 3. What do you expect from your puppies at 4 months, 6 months, 8 months, 1 year, etc.? At 4 - 8 months I expect them to be puppies and so I keep training short and fun with a focus on obedience basics and the foundation for competition. At a year, nothing much really changes in my training style, but I do demand more focus and more problem solving and begin proofing my dogs in some areas. The ages are not set in stone as each dog is different and they mature at different rates. |

We've had success using Patch's dog food for crate training...but she really, REALLY, likes ice chips...sure, our hands freeze but she works very hard during our training sessions. Find something Cash loves and use it. Good luck! Enjoy the puppy stage |

# 1 When max as well as my first shorthair Jax were "infants" I would use liverwurst . Break off little pieces & it worked great.
#2 I know (NOTHING) about the competition world. However when I see some of the fine specimens posted on here with their accomplishments I do enjoy it !
#3 I say it's all up to the pup & let them decide how far we can go. Keep it fun. Let them be puppy's & always end on a good note. Keep a cool head & everything comes together. |

I just wanted to say, thanks a ton Texas Belle! I just made the banana treats and Cash is going nuts over them We just got some bananas off the tree from the backyard too, which makes the treats extra special. Plus, I feel way better knowing exactly what i'm feeding him. |

| Glad your pup likes them. I know mine go nuts over them. They are also nice to carry in pockets because they are not crumbly, greasy or smelly. |

1) mini ritz bitz or cherios work well 2)unless you have dreams of showing in the AKC - don't worry about the color 3)this would depend on what you require of your dog - hunters, showing, agility, pet, etc each have their own requirements. No one can go wrong teaching basic obedience, manners and socializing well with people, dogs and other animals. |

socializing, obedience, and manners training is constantly ongoing. Speaking of that, I remember seeing a book or two recommended on this forum, but I can't for the life of me remember the names of any of them (one of them might have been called Bird Dog or something) Any recommendations? |

Jeezo, picking bananas in your own garden - sometimes i forget this forum is international, then a post like that stops me in my tracks we're lucky we're not still picking icicles off the trees.
Sorry, back to the thread. I just use the usual things as special treats eg chicken, liver, cheese, garlic sausage (recommended by a trainer), and i've found all of these things to work well. Another high value treat i've found to work well are fish flavoured treats and dried fish skins you find in some pet shops. Obviously they are rather smelly (oh happy dog!) and not every dog likes fish but for the ones that do, the fish treats can be pretty convenient for when you dont have time to prepare anything. But i think dogs react to fish the same as humans do, they love it or hate it so you'd have to try it first. Oh, and i think i'll give texas belle's banana treat recipe a go too, Keely's got a sweet tooth! |

in florida it's basically beach weather all year long , I'm actually taking Cash to the beach tomorrow as long as the weather allows.
The banana treats are amazing! The recipe is not only extremely easy to make, but Cash absolutely loves them. I made little bite size ones for training. Another great thing is that I can tear them apart very easily or keep a few in my pockets without getting messy or smelly hands and pockets. (not to mention that the minimal smell also allows Cash to focus on something besides my pockets ) Also, they don't seem to cause soft stool like a lot of other store-bought treats. I will definitely be making these again.
