Hello, I have a quick question that a search on this forum couldn't provide.  We just adopted a GSP, who is just under two years old.  My question is about how many ribs should you be able to visibly see when the dog is relaxed?  He somehow contracted a parasite where he was fostered, and is on medication for it (nothing major).  When we took him to the vet his weigh-in was 68.8 lbs, but he looks slim in the hindquarters and we can see most of his ribs (he's by no means looks like a starvation victim, just slight indentations). If the weight for a purebreed GSP (which he is) male upto about 70 lbs, is there casuse for concern?

Sorry for the discourse, have owned dogs before but first to this breed.

Thanks in advance for any insight.

I believe the therory is to see 2 ribs... 68 sounds like a good weight... Both my males don't make the 70 mark (that sounds big to me)... My bigger one is 55ish and my smaller one is 50ish...he is more petite in build and never sits down so I am constantly trying to plump him up...

The dog is this picture weighs 75#, 25"

He's skinny compared to his brother

I'd like for him to be  80#

All I know is with our female, I see her ribs and she EATS. I even give her fresh meat in her dinner. She just has way more energy than our male. She is constantly running and I see 4 of her ribs. With the male, I see no ribs - he's more lazy than she is. Doesn't run around as much, like to lounge and sleep alot - two totally different personalities. I'm new to the breed too. No matter what I feed her, she remains on the lean side.

Striker can easily get so skinny you see his hip bones and that is what I don't like so I constantly watch his weight and food intake...he is smaller but eats way more than Blitz...

I would say don't get hung up on the actual number. You should be able to feel all of their ribs and see the last two. My male has ranged from 65 to 80 pounds, depending on his stage of life (gangly teenager, well muscled from hunt training, to a happy senior). I know that sounds like a large weight range, but I look at his overall condition. When he was around 18 months old, I had a really hard time keeping weight on him, had judges comment that he was too skinny, etc. He eventually grew out of the gangly stage and hasn't looked back. At one point he was getting 5 cups of food a day, now he gets just over 2. I honestly don't pay attention to the actual number that my dogs weigh, except when it comes to medication dosages, instead, I look at their overall appearance. I hope that answered your question :)

Thanks everyone for the information, makes me less likely to fret. Still can't get rid of his Giardia, but hoping once we do he can hid a couple more ribs.

I have 2, 12 month old littermates. One male and one female. My male is larger, and lazier!  I can still seehis last two ribs, but he is definitely thicker than his sister, and has a little fat pad on his chest!  He weighs between 70 and 75 pounds.  I've been told by the breeder he could stand to lose a little!    My female is much smaller, about 48-50 pounds, but she never stops!   She climbed a tree today, I will have to post the video!   She runs circles around my male in every which way!   The cool thing about her is when we bring her inside, her "off" switch is IMMEDIATE!     When we bring the male inside, he still has energy to burn so he paces all over the place, and will want back outside within 20 minutes of being let in.  Urgggh! It is comforting to read this forum and to know that "ribs" are okay for this breed....cause mine definitely show ribs!    Mine still eat quite a bit, anywhere from 4-5 cups a day. Praying for the day they go down to 2-3!    It's hard to keep weight on the female, and I'm always trying to slip her an extra treat here and there!
