Is a good hunting dog bred or trained to be good ?

I will start with no amount of training can replace a well bred dogs ability go hunt.

IMO : A average dog with a good handler will always be a average dog.

Not even in a litter of ten pups from good parents can one know how the pups are going to be, this is were I would like to know how some pups become better hunting dogs than others if from the same litter ?

A good handler is mostly beneficial in a testing format.
When it comes down to real life hunting a dog needs certain traits to excel.
To excel a dog needs to know how to use its nose, the terrain and wind, needs to be able to apply gained knowledge, needs to have a fair amount of prey drive and strong cooperation,
MOST of all - a dog needs a strong will to find game.
A dog does not need any obedience to excel at hunting.

Exposure,exposure,exposure.

I find that too many people have the bar set too low.

Then one could get any gundog run it everyday and within a year have a good hunting dog ?

or

Does breeding also play a role ?

All the above is inherited and enhanced by exposure.

All dogs know how to use their nose - some dogs do it a heck of a lot better.
Observing many dogs work will give a person the knowledge needed to determine which dogs "have it" and which dogs have it less.

Being able to apply gained knowledge is intelligence - NOT all dogs have this and some dogs appear to have intelligence but really don't - the dogs that appear to have intelliegnce but don't only have it when in familiar areas.

Prey drive is totally inherited and can be brought to its full potential thru exposure -
some dogs clearly have less prey drive/focus/will to find game

Strong cooperation is totally inherited - some dogs appear cooperative but really aren't - again observing many dogs will give a person the knowledge they need to to determine a truely cooperative dog

A good hunting dog is all breeding -
but then again, what's good to someone else may be poor to me

I do not believe tons of exposure will make a decent hunting dog a great hunting dog
The traits mentioned above can not be trained
No one can train a dog to hunt
they can train a dog to pass a test and appear as a great hunter
the truth will be revealed during the hunt for wild game

Again, obedience is not necessary for a dog to be a great hunter
It will make the hunt more enjoyable for the hunter, tho
The best dogs have know-how right out of the box
I don't train my dogs to hunt - I train my dogs to do what I want them to do during the hunt

The bottom line is -

all hunting breeds will hunt

it's the level of the hunt that separates the boys from the men(so to speak)

I have very high standards
A dog better impress me within the first few months I have them or they can find a home with lesser standards
