I spend so much time thinking about doing the right thing for Keely with regards to positive/negative associations and careful introductions, then something really unexpected bites me on the ass

I was putting up our folding whirly this morning, as i've done 3 or 4 times so far this year (when the weather allows ) without her paying much attention and i dont know whether it was the noise but I was aware that my little black bullet had taken off to the opposite end of the garden, tail between legs, ears down and into a crouch.  I looked around me wandering if she'd met a bee or wasp.  I called her over a few times, crouched down to entice her over, brought out a treat etc but to no avail.  I thought it best just to leave her to come in without any pressure (she has to pass the whirly). She eventually came in very tentatively.  I then treated her and got our her squeaky ball and chucked it just outside the door a couple of times, and eventually she moved nearer the whirly (ears still down) to retrieve it.  She's still quite wary of it and i suppose i should be happy in a way that she keeps away from it, i had terrible problems with Kintra trying to pull clothes and towels off it (much to the amusement of passers-by).  But tomorrow morning we're leaving to go to Loch Tay for a week and i'm a little worried that i'm not going to get the chance to desensitize her to the whirly before we leave, and that maybe removing it from her environment for a week might make her worse when we return.  I know it sounds like a silly problem, but i dont want it to turn into a big deal for her, esp when passing it is the only way into the house.  Any quick fix ideas? I've already used treats and her ball to bring her near but she's still so wary and wont venture past it without enticement

Miss you forever Kintra baby xxx

Okay...help me out a wer bit here...I think we are talking about a folding clothesline that kind of looks like an umbrella, right? Why don't you try this? Take it out of the holder that it sits in (I guess-in the US there is like a pipe that goes into the ground which you can insert the clothesline pole). Anyway...lay it on the ground, folded down. Go and sit beside it and do normal things...read, have a glass of tea....every now and then reach over and pat it..."good whirly", then get up and go inside. Leave it outside but on the ground... If you have time before you leave...put it up, but still lay it down on the ground...and do the same thing. It won't happen overnight, but now's the time to start getting a handle on it. Even if you have to stop and start all over again when you return you still need to show Keely now that this is not something to fear. There are several fear periods for youngsters and perhaps you just hit at the right time with your clothes dryer...

We had something similar happen to one of our local dogs at a show in which someone's large umbrella got into the wind and launched itself toward the dog...this is an older bitch so she was just traumatized. We took every size of umbrella to our handling class and left them lying around (opened), walked her around and through the umbrellas...Every now and then the breeze would move them around and that caused a bit of a fright, but then she got over it. After about an hour, she was fine and has gone on to be very close to finishing her show championship....

Just keep working at it and she'll come around....show her today that there isn't a problem with the clothes dryer....and then just put it away. Don't make her walk up to it...not today anyway. That will come later. :) But definitely DO NOT tell her, good girl...that will be reinforcing her fear. Just tell her, "let's go" and walk right past it...you keep walking and don't stop, or treat or whatever...

Good luck and have fun with your trip!

I agree with Phyllis, but if you don't get to it before you leave don't worry about. Remember too the more you stress on it, the more she will react. Puppies go thru several fear periods, and usually all it takes is time and exposure. Remember this is no big deal.

Bella hasn't been phased by much, which we have been happy about. But there have been a few random weird things that made that tail tuck and those ears droop. Usually, if I just continued about my way normally, talking to her a normal voice and not a coddling tone...she seems to get over it very quickly and then gets curious instead. She sees me alpha, and why in the world would her alpha expose her to something she couldn't handle, after all :)

I wouldn't worry too much about it and when you get home... go about your way with it as you normally would (maybe give her a fun or yummy treat to distract her not far from where you'll be) and she reacts the same after having some time to forget what startled her. If she reacts the same...then start working some desensitization methods.
