Does anyone here make their own sweet potato treats? We just bought a huge box because we love, but I dont know that we'll eat that many before they go bad. So, I was thinking about making dog treats with a couple of them. I don't have a dehydrator though so they would have to be baked. I know when I bake sweet potato fries/chips for us, they never really harden. I don't want to try to store mushy treats. So any tips on how to make them crispy would be great.

Second part of this question is do you think it's ok to give Havoc treats already? We're talking pieces no bigger than 1/2" square per day while we're working on commands.

I started giving my last litter treats as soon as mom started weaning them.  I tend to make my own treats anyway so I knew what was in the treats that I gave the puppies too.  Here is a recipe for sweet potatoe treats that sounds like what you are looking for.  I haven't tried it yet, so if you try it let me know how it works. The original recipe said it worked better with a food dehydrator, but this was the instructions for doing them in the oven.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 250° F
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Cut off one side of the sweet potato lengthwise, as close to the edge as possible. Cutting the side of the potato first allows you to then turn the potato onto this flat surface that you have just created. Having a stable area to rest the potato will make it easier to cut the potato into slices. Don't discard that first piece, it comes out just as yummy as the rest!
  4. Cut the rest of the potato into 1/3" slices, no smaller than 1/4".
  5. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  6. Bake for 3 hours, turning half way through.
  7. Cool completely on a wire rack.

Storing - Although these treats are dried, you will want to keep them in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. You can freeze them for up to 4 months.
