I just thought I would share this video of how my dogs react when my son comes home from school...I consider it a good dog behavior video... lots of people ask about controling dogs jumping when you get home and a big key factor is ignoring them and not talking baby talk to them...so from day 1 we have always just ignored them even my kids...Now Blitz gets more excited cuz he is obsessed about his feeding schedule and he knows when Colten gets home he gets fed...so he will wait by the door then realize he should be at the top of the stairs, then he follows him into the kitchen...

Great work! I avidly practice this as well, and make sure guests to the house know this - no touch, talk or eye contact. We have to ignore him, even if he's got all your shoes in his mouth. Until both dogs lie down and are calm for a few minutes do I call them over. In the beginning, this took over 45 minutes to enforce(gosh, he used to bark and whine and just plain pushy). Now they know the drill and go right to their beds and calm right down. |

| Excellent! Took us a while to get this under control. They still mostly bark when we would get home - but one of them had his/her head through the cat door as we walk up the stairs. Then it's the ignore, no eye contact and Velvet isn't too bad and Windsor has learned to go grab his antler or nylabone and chew the heck out of it while we get our coats off, etc. We never taught him this but the instance he's overly excited, he'll run and find his antler to chew on. And he didn't do it in the beginning - (we have the wood trim to prove it - all scratched up) but for some reason, he's been doing this grab a toy thing for a while now. Another thing we've done is close the blinds so they don't go off at us coming home or a deer, stray cat, etc. Now that it's nicer out, they'll be in their pen all day. |

nice work! We need to incorporate this with Luna. She's such a jumper, and I know it's our fault b/c we too are excited to see her when we get home and it's hard to ignore her. But I can see how that's the only way it's going to work to break the habit. Hopefully we (my husband and I) can kick our butts into gear and work on this, and enforce it for anyone that visits too. If they weren't soooooo cute it would be a whole lot easier. Love your other dog relaxing on the chair too! |

They aren't quite as good when guests come over because the guest even when you tel them to ignore the dogs never can or they give off some sort of vibe but at least I am then down by the door and can tell the dogs to go back up stairs...they love pizza delivery too cuz they know I have to sign and then grab the pizza and I can't keep telling them to go back upstairs, lol! |

| Lucie.McKee - you're so right, it's really difficult to resist their welcome party for you! Our worst habit with Kintra was when we would leave her in the campervan whilst we went to the supermarket for a few minutes whilst on holiday. Well, when we came back out my other half and i would actually start gathering pace whilst walking back to the van with the shopping (it was an unspoken thing) and on some occasions would end up sprinting through the carpark to get back to the dog before the other got there to get the welcome. The funny thing was, she would initally look through the window past us as if she was ashamed and embarrassed to be with us - it was like "oohhhh myyy god! they're doing it again, i'm not with these people!!" ;0) we just couldnt wait to get back to her! |

My dogs behavior at the door is a bit different. Since I live alone I want my dogs to make themselves known to anyone at the front door. So, I let them bark. Once I get to the door I tell them "Quiet" and "Back." The 3 oldest have this down well and will quiet down and back away from the door, but they stand behind me. The youngest is still learning, but she does quiet down now and back up a bit. The reaction of strangers is always the same. They back away from the door and are standing about 15 ft back on the driveway when I open the door. Of course, many times I open the door before they even have a chance to ring the bell or knock because the dogs always alert me of someone approaching if they are inside. Splat - Nice job with your dogs, and you are so right on the training and routine. I would add consistency too. |

Thanx! Mine alert me too when someone arrives way before that someone knock or rings the bell so we usually answer before that too...Blitz has never barked really (only when he plays with Striker) but Striker barks at everything...some strangers are not sure of the 2 when they are at the top of the stairs dancing around and Striker is barking and I am telling the dogs to stay back...the strangers think I am telling the dogs to stay back cuz they are mean...or sometimes I tell the kids not to open the door till I have the dogs in a stay and the people at the door are standing back ready to run away if need be...it is funny knowing though that they would only be attacked with love! |

Wonderful well mannered GSPs. Great to see. . Rocky is told to get back and sit on his rug when we answer the door or I send him to another room while I answer the door. Rocky has a deep guardy bark that sends people down the side walk. Rocky is the President Shorthair of the "German Shorthair Security CO. He is the most Guardy dog we have ever lived with. The good news about having such a guardy dog , I don't have to worry about house invaders not wanted and that is not so bad.

| I'm impressed! Good job! I think i need to train my guests and husband rather than my dogs - they get them way too excited! |
