We all know just how crazy active and hyper our dogs can be.  Mine is the same, bordering on reckless on a regular basis.  With all that energy and care thrown to the wind, it's no wonder my dog comes up limping more ocassionally after a day of exercise, training, etc.  Of course, this doesn't slow her down at all.  Even if I try to keep her inside to let her heal, she runs off her energy inside on the "racetrack" she imagines she has when she loops through the first floor of our house as if it's an oval at Indy.  She just will not rest and let her limp heal.   Anyone else encounter this?  Any suggestions?

Crate her or put her on a leash. My shorthairs have had so many injuries from bicep tears to abdominal punctures, to minor scratches, torn nails, limps, etc. When they need to rest you have to do whatever to keep them quiet. The crate works best. I also keep them shut in the same room with me so they can't do the race track thing. Also, an anti-inflammatory for the injury and either a sedative like ace if you have it or benadryl (two 25mg pills for most shorthairs) works to chill their jets a bit.

Don't let her run! I would confine her to either her crate or a room in your house. Outside, on leash only. Mine also run with a reckless abandon and total disregard for personal safety and come up lame on occasion. You have to do your best to keep them calm even inside. Not easy with a GSP!

Thanks for the replies. I guess the answers are common sense. Just wondering if I had the only dog that gets "dinged" regularly. All I can say is she pays with reckless abandon.

Same here...  Sadie comes-up gimpy occasionally as well. Usually it is when I am playing with her, and she tries to jump up and nip my nose, lands funny, or we cross-up and I accidently step on her while running (I am embarrassed to admit that...).  I will then tone-down the intensity, and increase the duration of her walks (Heel, Whoa, Sit, down...) which seems to help.  I had Benedryl recommended on occasion by my vet as well.  She is usually back up-and-running (no pun intended) in a day, or two.

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when they pick-up, and deilver to hand a bird that they pointed, and you shot. - Todd

Yea crate or other confinement. I will just use a baby gate to keep my goofball in a room with me limiting his ability to be nuts.
I also use a holistic anti-inflammatory called Traumeel for aches and pains or minor bangs. You crush the tablet and then I put it on cottage cheese or yogurt because you want them to lick the powder. It tastes kind of sweet so he likes it. What I've noticed is that it calms him and he seems to sleep well. I don't understand how it works but having used it myself I can vouch that it does
