Keely's now 13 weeks old and has had a course of penicillin for vaginitis which turned into a UTI and caused constant squatting and peeing.  The meds seem to have sorted her problem but now i think her anal glands are over-secreting as she's now leaving a fishy secretion when she sits (sorry, TMI ).  Her poos are solid so i think her glands are doing the job, so to speak, but i wonder whether the penicillin has maybe caused them to overproduce.

I know many dogs have this prob through life, including the bum skooting habit, but i just wondered if anyone had experienced this with a young pup, esp when i havent changed her diet or anything.

My puppies have always been great producers when it comes to the anal glands.  Thankfully as they get older this problem goes away. You might need to express them.  It is pretty easy to do yourself, but it is stinky.  I check all my dogs anal glands when I give them a bath and if they are full I express them.  There are some videos on the web which show you how to do it.  I posted them a while back.  I couldn't find the videos I posted before, but both of these are pretty good.  Either method shown will work.

Thanks.I'm not squeamish about it but my previous vet showed me how to do it but suggested leaving it to him so he could also check for any growths too! But i think it's a useful thing to be able to do on a regular basis anyway because if the dog is bothered by it, you can tell it's a pain in the ass, pardon the pun! Thanks, i'll check the vid out.

Anal glands is not that uncommon a problem. The vet can show you how to express them but yeah it is stinky. Tessa doesn't have a problem EXCEPT when she gets riled up over the neighbor's cat moving by the window - it happened a few times that she expressed her glands while she was trying to get to the cat...nasty...nasty.

A lot of the puppy issues will resolve as the dog matures. Tessa had problems with diarrhea, loose stools, colitis, an allergic reaction to a vaccine, eye discharge, UTI etc - all of which are resolved now that she's older (except maybe the vaccine issue, we have not "tested" that one, she is being pre-treated).

Hang in there!

Thanks for the advice. Certainly makes me regret allowing her so much freedom on the furniture! Kintra was an obsessive bum-dragger, but Keely just seems to be leaving smells everywhere! Hope any visitors dont blame me ;0)
