My wife and I got an unexpected visit from two people that own relatives to my dog.  One is a sister and the other is a half-sister (same mother, different dad).  They are both beautiful dogs.  Her sister has similar colors (black/white/gray) and her half-sister brown.   Her sister is 2 inches taller and at least 10-15 pounds heavier than my dos.  Her half-sister is about the same height, but much "thicker" in muscle mass.  I'm thinking that my dog was actually the runt of the litter.  We had our eye on her sister, but she was already spoken for, so we picked Sadie, who looked similar. When they were pups, Sadie was so much bigger than ther sister, but she forgot to grow as much.  Anyway, the dogs played for 90 minutes until they were all tired and ready for a nap.  Does anyone know if dogs have anyway of knowing their siblings?   I wouldn't think so.

I have wondered this and feel they must. Since Bella is in socialization mode... We are exposing her to a lot of dogs. She is getting better but initially was VERY unsure about dogs that were bigger than her. UNLESS (and it still boggles me that she seems to know) it is another pointer breed... She runs to them and is instantly comfortable and confident. Has been this way with other GSPs, Weims, Viszlas... She just seems to know they are more like her.

Good question. I do know they recognize their own breed, but whether or not they remember their siblings I don't know. I have had a chance to observe this a bit as I had a litter a year and half ago and some of the siblings see each other regularly and some rarely and some never. The greeting ritual seems to be the same for all the pups that see each other say every other week or even less frequently. For my pup who sees her sister at least once or twice a week there is no greeting ritual as she is taken right into the pack. I do think Halo recognizes her puppies though as she treats them all the same and feels she has to correct them like momma dogs do. She is not like that with other dogs, but only with her puppies, even the ones she hasn't seen in many many months.
