knight - Not sure which dog shows you go to, but you are not seeing black dogs in the AKC arena (maybe very dark liver) because black is a DQ in the AKC. UKC still accepts them, but they are still pretty sparse in the US. Other countries black is ok (Canada has a severe penalty). In performance events, blacks are fine, just not the show ring. Also there is a person on this forum who has an almost solid white shorthair with a mostly liver head that she runs in FT and is showing, and that dog is now pointed in the show ring and has points in the field as well. Where I live there are quite a few shorthairs that are both in the field and in the show ring as well. I agree that shorthairs in general are pretty consistent between show and field although I think there is a tendency to see shorthairs kept a little heavier for show. Not everyone does that, but some do.

Good luck in your search and would love to see your puppy pictures when you find your puppy.

I appreciate everyone's input, I'll take it for what it's worth, filter it how I want, and go with it.

No sense in getting fussy.

Let's celebrate that my husband got bitten by the "NEED multiple GSPs" bug!

I think you can find the color you are looking for and still get the right temperament, confirmation ect... you just have to find the right breeder and when you find that color really look into what went into breeding that litter and what the breeder was trying to get out of it so then you know if that matches what you want...

Didn't say I was seeing black dogs at AKC shows, though they are campaigned in UKC and in the International Championship ring. And are being pushed to be included in the AKC standard for confirmation from my understanding. They can field trial and do obedience work without penalty, but can't earn the AKC DC.

I love hearing that a white factor dog is winning in the ring; there aren't that many.

I can't wait to post puppy pictures!!!! Don't worry, I'll buy a camera before I get him to capture the cuteness. :)

Sorry, I misunderstood your comment. As for black "being pushed" to be included in the standard, that is done by the parent club, GSPCA, and there was a vote a couple of years ago, but it did not pass (it was closer though than past votes). Since then though it has not been brought up for another vote. I think the folks that had been pushing it were burnt out on the effort.

There are not color limitations for shorthairs in the performance events, they just have to be registered in the AKC. As for Dual, that requires a CH (Show Champion) and a FC (Field Champion) to get the DC title. Any dog that achieves this is remarkable. Two of my dogs are out of multiple DCs.

I show in UKC and International and I know Moose who has some lovely black GSPs also shows in both venues up in her neck of the woods. In TX we never see any black GSPs anywhere which is sad, but I think it may have to do with the heat down here too. There are just now a couple of solid livers showing up in the show ring in AKC and in Hunt Tests and other performance events.

I posted my thoughts b/c this is how I feel.
I didn't imply that what the OP wanted could not be found.
example -
a breeder and litter are picked. great lines,parents/grandparents are great, litter hits the ground and not the coloration desired. What do you do? Move onto the next litter?
example -
you pick this same great litter and yes, you have a choice of two. Does this make these two pups the right match for your home?

Just some food for thought.

I think the OP will make a sensible decision.  Its like buying a house.  You have a great location but you hate the kitchen.  You love the back yard but its on a busy street.  It has a great view but no "double sinks" in the master bath.  You just take your time or decide which factors to overlook.

I have a white factor and I hated her looks when I first saw her--I too wanted a patched & roan liver!  Now I have both. . .in the future I'll be careful what I wish for!

I like to say -
the dog you are supposed to have will always find its way to your home.

Funny, that is not a defense, but a statement and my position. Also funny, how you are so arrogant that you believe I was responding just to you. I was not. That is my position as a breeder, owner, handler, and trainer, period. The OP can do what she wants with the information, I am simply giving my opinion, position and experience. I do not believe anyone said the OP should accept less than what she wants, and last time I checked we lived in a free country where everyone is still allowed to make their own choices and decisions. If you do not like my statement that is your choice, but don't attack me for stating my opinion based on experience.

Arrogant? wow...never been accused of that before.

You are absolutely right about being a free country...I spent the best years of my life defending this great country.

Have a great day.

The BIG question is when are you going to get number 3? LOL :) It's a slippery slope...carefull.

I hear that 3 is a good number and evens out the pack - that's what my friend keeps telling me and she has 3 weims. A coworker said he might need to find a home for their 1 yr old Great Dane - I almost volunteered but I just can't right now!

I have 4 shorthairs and I think shorthairs love a pack which really means more than 1. I saw a difference when I added Halo and I had two. I then added Ringo, my boy, and not too long ago my baby, Fauna. They all have different things they like to do with each other and it seems more noticeable with my baby. Fauna and her mother love to hunt together. She likes to lay in the sun with her aunt and her uncle is most definitely her best bud and playmate. When Halo had the puppies the first night she would not settle down in the whelping box with the puppies until Belle (my oldest female and Halo's best friend) was sleeping on the sofa in the same room as the whelping box. Then later Halo loved it when Ringo (my male) would come in and get in the whelping box and babysit for a while. I was surprised that she was so tolerant of the other dogs around the pups, but then thought about it and realized that is normal behavior in any dog pack including wolf packs. Every member has a job. So yes, I do believe shorthairs are happiest in a pack of at least 2 dogs.

New puppy, which the kids are thinking is going to be called Zoomer or Aladin (oh dear), will be dog #3:
3-ish year old pit bull
1 year old GSP
puppy GSP

The only chance that we'll get another puppy is if either of the GSP boys proves himself worthy of being bred, and then maybe I'll take a stud fee pup. We're talkin' years, though!
