Just curious as to what others are feeding their GSP's.  We have our first GSP puppy for two weeks now, and when we picked him up the breeder told me he was being fed Diamond puppy...so that's what I got for him...so as not to shock him with a sudden food change.

Today I will be ordering Flint River Ranch food for him and will slowly switch him over to that and keep him on it.  I raised hounds years ago, and they did very well on Flint River Ranch food...as it doesnt contain corn or by-products or preservatives like a lot of the store brand and feed store feeds do.

I looked at the ingredients in the diamond puppy and the first ingredient was chicken by product meal....which could be anything from innards, to beaks, feet, you name it.  Second ingredient...whole ground corn...another no no in my opinion.

So what do ya'all feed your GSP's?

LittleJohn - Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your puppy. We love to see pictures of shorthair puppies. Hint, hint!!

I suspect the reason you have not gotten any responses here yet is that this subject has been discussed many times over the years ad nauseam. Even within the last couple of months there were a couple of threads on dog foods. General consensus is good quality, high in protein and fat, of which there are a variety. There are also some folks on here that feed raw very successfully. For the record, I actually just switched my dogs to a new food because the manufacturer of my old food changed something. I am now feeding Purina Pro Plan Performance. I like it for a number of reasons, but my dogs love it and are doing very well on it. For me it was a good choice as they gave a nice discount (I have 4 dogs and breed) and it is chicken based which I have to have for my oldest girl who is allergic to beef. Also, I have several shorthair friends in the area who field trial their dogs and have been successfully using it for quite some time. It is also pretty easy to get, but since I order online that was not quite as important.

I feed Fromms Adult Gold Duck. I thought I had read somewhere that Flint River had a recall recently. I am kinda weird that I only feed food that is made with all USA ingredients and as far as I know that is only 3 companies.

I used to use the Purina line when I bred, raised and trained registered Bluetick coonhounds.  My hounds did ok on it, and they had a program where you save the weight circles and get a certain amount of points and then you could get coupons for food or other rewards for using their products...not sure if they even have that anymore.

I went from Purina to Diamond, and my hounds seemed to do even better on the Diamond...but at one point they had a recall on some of their food, so I dropped Diamond and went with the Flint River Ranch and never looked back.

I also understand the part about a subject being beat to death on a forum.  Hopefully there will be some objective input on the subject.  I am new here, so my apologies if nauseum set in when you read the subject line of this post.

My 3 dogs - GSP,EP and Bluetick do really well on Fromm's. I was using Innova until they sold out and Canidae before there change and they moved there plant to the same one Diamond uses. Sometimes I can not get the search to work on the forum so ask away. On a side note: What lines were your Blueticks?

My Blueticks were very heavily Smokey River Chief bred.  I had a daughter of "Smokey River Chiefs Blue Hoss".  Who in his heyday was the world champion bluetick in the nite hunts. 1996 if my memory is correct, but it could have been 1992...lol...not sure.

I also had a blue that was heavy Vaughn bred, and I crossed him back on my Chief dogs after I doubled up on Chief.

Two motorcycle accidents later, i dont get through the woods so good at night anymore, so I have all but quit nite hunting and am focusing on quail and grouse hunting now.

I will take some pictures of my pup and post them up in the next couple days.  He is white with liver spots and some ticking.

The food choices people make will depend a lot on what you do with your dog, so keep that in mind as well.

I have a 3 1/2 month old gsp.  I was giving her Iams healthy naturals, but I didn't realize the second ingredient is chicken by-product!!!!  Who knows what kind of garbage my poor puppy was eating.

I switched her to Blue (The Blue Buffalo Co.)puppy formula chicken and brown rice.  She loves it!!!  I also buy all the treats from the Blue Buffalo Co.  So happy I switched.  Very satisfied :) and so is my Binni Bell <3

Mine aren't puppies but when I got Windsor he was on Nutro Lamb & Rice and he farted some stinky ones all the time. We put both our dogs on Taste of the Wild - grain free. Windsor has a grain allergy and Velvet can eat just about anything but they eat that. Our pet store has a program where you buy 12 bags and the 13th one is for free. Also feed them Evangers pure meat (canned), grain free with the Taste of the Wild for dinner. I get a discount on that from the petstore - a can is $1.39 and I get a discount. Taste of the Wild runs around $50 - I don't get a discount on that but the free bag is cool :)

Luna's a little over 1 yr now, and has been on Taste of the Wild since approx. 6 months and is doing great on it! We put a little bit of fish oil we get at the dog specialty store on it to help with her coat too.

Its really difficult to find the right food for your dog, esp when there are so many dodgy ingredients. I fed Kintra on Orijen for a while (she loved it) then changed to Acana for a slightly lower protein level. I also threw in some carrot or sweet potato too.
I initially avoided anything with a meat "meal" high up on the ingredients list until i found out that the "meal" is actually a higher meat content than the pure meat, just without the moisture content. Seems though that many of the manufacturers like to add by products and try to pass them off as "meal".
I did put Kintra onto raw gradually and her allergies certainly seemed to clear up, but didnt get the chance to find out how she was on it longterm, but she really enjoyed it.
I personally will always err on the side of keeping it as natural as possible, and luckily now there seems to be an increase on the number of manufacturers concentrating their efforts to keep their foods natural, and a subsequent tightening-up of the labelling too. At the end of the day though, the dog kinda decides for you!

Miss you forever Kintra baby xxx

We feed Orijen, but alas it's expensive, here in Canada the Regional Red version goes for $72-$75 a bag. May possibly move to something more affordable in the future.

I decided to go with Flint River Ranch, as I had very good success with it in the past.  At some point I may try TOTW as it really looks like it is good stuff and people really seem to be happy with it.  I will give him 6 months on the FRR and see how he does with it and then decide whether or not to change.
