Our GSP puppy is 9 weeks old and has long facial hair under the eyes, on the top of the muzzle and on the tips of his ears. It's short every where else. Is this normal?
I got a chance to look at the mother and father and both did not have have this characteristic.
(Sorry about the pic size, wanted the detail to be visible)

| I would suspect that a long haired dog, maybe a wirehair, got to the bitch. I have never seen a shorthair with that much hair. Looks more like a wirehair in the face. He also has pretty long hair on the feet and body. In any case he is a cute puppy. |

Thanks
I looked at some pictures of wire hair pointers on google and there is little doubt he has wire hair pointer in him. I didn't realize the location and length of the hair could vary so much on wire hair pointers.

| He definately has wirehair in him somewhere. We had a wirehair bitch who had less long hair than him, just looked like a gsp with the exception of a beard. You can get wirehair with very little long hair that looks like a gsp, but you cant get a 100% gsp that looks like a wirehair, if that makes any sense. Our wirehair was an absolute star, they are a fantastic breed so congratulations on having such a lovely combo. He certainly has that wirehair character around the face, really cute. Keep the pictures coming x |

Did you purchase him being told he was a GSP? Personaly I love the look. Nice looking pup ! Lot's of luck to you guy's. He still has a tail so I am guessing you guy's are from an area that doesn't dock the tail . |

He is adorable! I have seen one Deutsch Kurzaar with longer hair all over her body. It was silky like a Deutsch Langhaar(German Longhair). She was in the breed show at the annual meeting for NADKC(national organization in the US for DK's) so I feel sure her parentage was not in question, and I was told this can crop up to normal coated parents.
That said, your pup looks like it has a beard like a German Wirehair. Just because it looks like it, does not mean 100% that it is, as genetics can play tricks.
Is the hair silky or more stiff? |

| Looks like a good waterfowling pup there no matter what the lines are. Hunt that extra hair off and call it good. With a full tail confirmation was out in most registries anyhow. |

juliej,
the dog you saw did it have a beard?
what was the rating this dog recieved?
I do not know that any females at the AM in 2011 look anything like a DL. |

| Genetics can play funny tricks. Mine is the color of a Weim. And parentage has been confirmed through DNA. |

Francine, I saw the dog at the 2010 annual meeting at Rob Engelking's. You can refer to page 27 of Georgina Byrne's book to see a photo of a purebred GSP with long silky hair. I do not remember the rating. b52doc, I am offering this information to let you know genetics can surprise us. The beard is a head scratcher though. |

The picture of the long haired shorthair is on pg 27, but the actual reference is on pg 16. Georgina Byrnes wrote "Rough and/or long coats occasionally appear in GSP litters. I have seen such dogs, and photographs of others, in both England (the dog in the picture is from Englands) and Australia. These may well be perfectly legitimate too. Long coats are recessive to short, so the same rule applies to long vs short as it does to "white" vs ticked...the cross-breeding to a long-coated dog may have taken place many generations earlier. The fact that long coats seem to be rarer than are "whites" probably indicates that few instances of cross-breedings to long-coated breeds have occurred during the breed's development." If you look at the picture in the book, the dog looks to have a coat more like an Irish Setter or English Setter and not like the puppy in this post. It also means that both parents would have to carry that recessive gene to produce a longhaired shorthair. I personally still think this puppy looks more like a wirehair or a griffon, than the longhaired GSP. As for the light color in shorthairs (jevans post) that makes them look like the color of Weims, that is from both parents carrying the dilute gene. Their is now a genetic test for the dilute gene. The long hair is not a DQ in shorthairs, but it is a severe penalty. The color is a DQ. |

Thank you Bev for further explaining the long hair. I looked(briefly) for the text, but I couldn't remember where it was and I did not want to misquote. Like I said, I have seen a long haired DK in a place where the parentage would not be questioned. This pup does look more wire-ey than silky, though. There is a lot of correspondence on gsp-l about a prominent GSPCA breeder, who is a member of the list that got a litter with a number of dilutes. She herself made it known about her pups, and all she did to prevent it from happening again. Until there is a genetic test for every possible mutation, not withstanding spontaneous ones, breeders will continue to be surprised. It is the responsible ones who report what happens. Unfortunately there continue to be culls(euthanised) at every level, and breeders who do not report them. b52doc, I am sure you will love, train and enjoy your pup in whatever venue you choose, hunting, obedience, agility or pampered pet. |

Well how 'bout that. The possibility of a longhaired shorthair is confusing, (or oxymoronish at the least) . Cute puppy, though - thanks for sharing the picture, and I hope you get the answers you are looking for. May reduce the amount of counciling the pup will have to go through when it is older . It does look more like a wire-hair, or a griffon to me, but I would not say that I have a trained eye. |
|
It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when you pick-up a bird that they pointed. - Todd |
