| Ok so since Penny's previous owner called Penny a "lowsy hunter", I'm amped to prove him otherwise! So during our daily mental workouts we have been fine tuning her call back, woah, sit ect. Well yesterday I was playing with her with some of my friends GSP training toys. I threw it, she chases it, gets to it, sniffs it for a milla-second then wonders off joyfully. UMM ok? She wont even nab at the toy, wont pick it up at ALL. What now? Chases them everytime but wont pick it up in her mouth? She dont chew on bones or any toys ect. Only time I seen any toy in her mouth was my step daughters stuffed horse. She slinked in daughters room and slinked back out with the toy in her mouth lol! Even resorted to trying to get her to retrieve that stuffed horse.. no luck! I know if she chased after the toy and actually picked it up in her mouth, it would be no problem getting her to return it back to me, but she just wont pick it up. |

| I always try to think of a creative way to solve an issue. Perhaps tie a tether line to the object and an throw it . She is sight chasing so when she gets there start pulling it in slowly to see if she will try and pick it up. if she picks it up let go of the teher line & call her in. Don't play tug of war . |

FYI ... Bo really didn't play fetch until he was about 2 and now only with orange street hockey balls (of which he is obsessed!). Raz doesn't play fetch at all. Just no interest. I don't know if no interest in fetch = bad hunting dog. |

| She is 3 according to her AKC papers. Tethering the toy is a good idea, gunna try it today! Your right, that DONT make her a bad hunter and even if she isnt cut out for it.. its no reason to kick her to the curb! She can still do anything she sets her mind to; there is so many different sports for this breed its crazy! I think previous owner is just plain arrogant for giving her up! Oh well, his loss our gain! |

I wonder if he repremanded the dog for picking stuff up as a pup? I think Max maybe on to something make it fun for the dog use a bummper or something, I would avoid bird scents cuz ya could open another can of worm, once the dog picks something up get low on your knees and get happy and call the dog then praise her mightly. After a bit she'll figure out ok I do this I'm making the boss happy and it should fix your problem. If not then ya may need a pro and start thinking about force fetch. See if the fun stuff works first. Watch and evaluate call the old owner and see what he did.

If the owner said she was a poor hunter then he obviously attempted to hunt her and train her. I bet he ruined her. |

Aw call me an optimist but I wouldn't call a 3 yr old dog ruined - if the instinct is there with some patience I bet she'll be able to hunt successfully My dog looks at you like you are crazy if you toss a ball and expect him to 'fetch' He will play a little fetch with a Kong wubba or something that has moving parts and squeaks BUT what I learned is that if you say put some real wings on a dummy and/or add some scent and make him sit until you send him to fetch he goes berserk to fetch/retrieve. For him the biggest thing is to add the sit/stay and release. Adding the string/line and keeping the toy moving may help too just to get her started. It does seem she likely got in trouble for playing or was improperly force fetch trained |

Here's my thoughts - she sounds timid. I would forget about training, aside from house manners, and work on building drive for the hunt. Get this girl out in the fields, woods and get her on birds, preferably quail, she can chase, even let her catch some - if she does that would be great.Get her using her nose and working terrain. If you want to prove she can hunt - this would be the way to do it. Retrieving is a huge part of the hunt. You can work on retrieving afterwards. Will you mainly be preserve hunting or wild bird hunting? |

pixie - They are in Kansas, so they ought to be able to find some wild birds up there. I agree with pixie, quit putting pressure on this dog right now (she also posted in Training about possible separation anxiety. This dog needs 1) time to adjust to her new home and 2) some fun. Getting her out in fields and letting her do what comes naturally should help her relax and bring out allot of her natural ability. It will also build confidence too. If you are afraid that she may run off, use a long line or check cord, but let her have some fun. I call it Quality Nose Time and my dogs go a little nuts when I tell them that because they know they are going to have fun. If you want to keep up with a little training, do basic obedience, but keep it short, fun and even more fun for her. I suspect the original owner may have been a little rough on the dog and she may be a bit soft. If so, he could have very easily messed her up a bit. I don't say ruined because you may be able to work through her issues. Whatever you do right now, do NOT shoot over her. She may already be sound sensitive or even gun shy and you do not want to make that any worse. She needs to get really really bird crazy before you test her abilities with a gun shot. Even then I would use a cap gun or a starter pistol with .22 load and be very far away while she is chasing a bird. Just wanted to throw that caution out as you said you want a hunting dog. Patience and moving slowly with this girl will get you to success the quickest IMHO. Good luck and post some pictures. |

It does make a difference in the type of hunting. there is considerably less pressure on preserves. If she can get into wild birds during outings this would be great, even if it's only 1 bird per outing. Rabbits, chipmunks, anything to get her using that nose, independence, drive - if her prey drive is strong enough she can turn out to be a good hunter even if she is timid outside the hunt. I would be cautious of her bolting. This is a dog that needs patience and time. I think by next season she could be in the fields getting her game on. |

| She is not gun shy by any means! The previous owner shot off into his field and she went bounding out and looking around after nada...poor thing! You get the gun out she is BAM at the front door doing circles reved up to go! Been mostly taken her to the parks but Saturday we are taken her to the lake for some hopeful bird action. No gun just pray practice/chase ect. Correct the more she interacts in the open the more she settles in back at home. Yes she is timid but NOT in the field, her confidence sky rockets! Ill try to take a video tomorrow at the lake to show you how much of a 360 she does when in the field. Oh by the way... tethering the toy did the trick, she chased and nabed on to it! YAY! |

| Hmmm, if she gets that excited over the gun and the field, I wonder about the guy that owned her. Sounds to me like she has good potential as a hunting dog. |

Did he happen to mention what made her a lowsy hunter? Let's not forget that you have not evaluated her nose, search and ability to stay in contact with the hunter. |

Sounds like my knuckleheads. I start layin out the gear they start bouncing off the walls! This is good news now stick with your plan and try and think about what Pixie said.. Evaluate what she does in those areas.
Could have a great dog and if she sees a gun and goes nuts she enjoys it, I'm thinking she may have been mishandled but a guy who shoots and misses and blames the dog or maybe he hunts lousy spots or doesnt know how to work the wind and blames the dog. See how she works, more importantly the contact see if she checks in from time to time, either by looking for you or coming to you ( which you send her right back out after yoy praise the hell out of her I like to say find the bird some guys say hunt em up whatever, see if she searches places birds should be. Let her have fun that's the most important thing just watch her... She comes in praise and send her again. A dog wakes up with one mission in life and thats to make you happy if she knows shes making you happy she will keep doing it.
Honestly the way these dogs are bread they know what to do, more often then not it's us that screws em up. I've done it.
I think shes gonna be fine good luck let us know!
