Find yourself either a good obedience class or a good instructor that can work one on one with you. I am not sure why a dog would be kept in a kennel for the first year of his life, but you have allot of making up to with this boy. You are also going to need allot of patience, but you should be able to get through this with him.

I would second the fact that you are going to have to have a lot of patience. Lots of positive reinforcement. You may want to start with small treats....which can be phased out later, especially if your dog is food motivated, or you have trouble keeping its attention in a short training session.

Try to work on only one thing at a time to start with. For instance, try working on sit for 5minutes, then stop. Always give lots of praise and end the training session on a good note. Later in the day repeat sit again for 5 minutes, then stop. Maybe repeat 3 times a day if you have time. When you notice your dog is "getting" sit, then add something else, but repeat at least one session of sit a day. Will boost your dogs confidence to have a great "sit' training session, because it has caught on. I have read several places where a dog needs to repeat a behavior at least 30 times before it actually "learns" the behavior with the command.

Keep the lessons short and positive. GSP are smart dogs and will usually catch on very fast. Your dog may be behind a preferred guideline, but its not to late to teach it. I would be worried about the dogs socialization skills since it unfortunately was in a kennel during a dogs critical socialization period as a puppy. It will be very important to introduce new things slowly until you know how your dog is going to react to new situations.

Best of luck!
