I'm not sure if I've asked this before, But Bean has a DEFINATE screech/cry/whine/  NOISE she does when she's excited. If she's letting me know someone is here she will Bark, like a regular dog ...............Is that noise they make a GSP thing ? We return from our walk, and she starts her whine at the driveway, I put her on a sit/stay in the yard to remove her collar, then she YIPS and SQUEELS while she runs the perimeter, leaping all the way! If my husband goes NEAR the back door, she starts it....jumping straight up doing a 360..then ends with a more GRRRRR sounding talk ........She knows it's ball time...

I've noticed, she doesn't BARK at other dogs, on our walks, she does the whine thing... This could be good ????  I'm hoping  ( although she strains at the leash like a rabid hound )

People, she barks at

A GSP thing ? or just a BEAN thing ?

Nah, pretty sure this is a GSP thing. Bo whines like mad when he is prevented from doing something he wants

I agree, it is a GSP thing  Rocky is quardy and Rocky is barky There is no person or dog walking by our house without us knowing  if Rocky is on guard alert watch!!! My Husband says that is a GSP good thing this day and age with all the neighborhood breakins and other house folleries that happen in our society.  He doesnot worry about me when Rocky and I are out on our long country walks day or night  Sounds like Bean and Rocky could do a neighborhood guardy duet together

Lemme just clarify this.......Bean sounds like a wounded HYENA ( however that sounds ) LOL

Such a high pitched shriek, and kind of like a seal &  walrus combined on HELIUM

Good news about her aggression problem, the Trainer/counselor, we seeked out will be off vacation tomorrow.....Bean's goin' to SCHOOL....well ME TOO...

One thing I have done to curb barking inside and out is teaching Jackson to use his inside voice.  When he barks I quiet him and praise him when he makes the most faint bark possible.  It is pretty darn cute to see him make a quiet "buuurrf" when i say, "Inside Voice".  I figure he gets to make noise, but I get to say how loud....  I got that trick from the classroom and was excited it worked on my dog!!  hehe :-)

Jackson does make some funny sounds when he is tired....but I have not heard him howl and whine all that much...but I think it is because my chihuahua sings enough for the both of them in that regard.  GOtta love the GSP quirks!!!

It does work!! I kind of figured it out on accident. I used to teach my chihuahua no bark when he was a puppy and he tried to sneak and made the cutest quiet bark.  I started praising him when he was quiet and it stuck.  So when Jackson barked I would say no bark at first it seems dogs will try to get away with what they can...so they start with a lil bark.  I would say good inside voice everytime he did it and it seems to quiet him down almost all the time.  The problem I have now is Sanchez who is very well trained barks sooo much now that he is the alpha dog.  ever since we got Jackson it is like he has to prove he is watching out.  I will try to get a video clip of this inside voice thing.

Jodi, that is so funny! Kerney never makes a sound unless there is something outside that makes her nervous. Bailey on the other hand....she is one of the most vocal dogs I have ever had. She cracks me up! :D We were having an issue with potty training and now that she has finally put it together she makes the funniest noise when she needs to go outside. She also gets mad if you make to much noise when she is trying to sleep. :)

It's a GSP thing!  My other dogs didn't do it.  Spot has all kinds of voices.

He does bark at birds and squirrels.  We are still working on the inside voice.

Definately a gsp thing. All mine are vocal. The two young ones chase Hunter around the yard. All you hear is yip yip yip, barking, etc... They all let me know when someone or something is nearby. If they want to go out they'll whine and spin. If I take one hunting the others run from window to window whining. And I love at night, Doddi and Belle sound like they are 80 years old when they flop down and snuggle all you hear is mmmmmmmm... move a little and mmmmmm! So silly dogs!!

What really gets me is when Hans lets loose with a long howl that rises in pitch as it gets louder, followed by jumping out of bed, running to the front window in the living room and barking his fool head off. All of this usually around 5:30 in the morning. Why, you might ask? He hears the morning paper hitting the ground in front of the house!!! No paper boy will ever get past Hans!!!

Bo thinks that his territory is anything he can see from the front or back window.  He'll bark at people he sees out walking the next street over. Imagine how put out he was when the neighbours behind us got a dog

The other day the wind was blowing really hard and kept knocking snow off the roof. Bo was convinced there was someone up there teasing him and would not stop barking at the blowing snow.

It is so refreshing to hear that other GSP's act with that same guardiness as Rocky!!! We have Rocky sleep in our bed room in his bed with a fan going so he is not waking us up at 5:30 am when the newspaper hits the front door. Rocky has very DEEP, DEEP lOW vicious guardy bark!! You jump when you first hear it. The first time someone hears Rocky's guardy bark it surprises them. Rocky's 85 lbs sound like a 200 lb dog bark. No high pitch to him. Don't know if anyone else has a GSP with a DEEP LOW gaurdy bark? It might be a large big boy GSP thing. But he will sing and howl in a loud musical vocal range when he hears the fire truck sirons!!... Everbell can be real proud of Bo barking at people walking the next street over!!! WOW Bo is a true neighborhood guard!!! Congrats to Doddi and Belle for letting ACE know when someone or something is entering their domain!!! My husband, Tom doesn't think anyone should train the guardy bark out of any GSP and value it as a good thing in this day and age. Children play safer out in their yards and sleep better at night living with GSPs.No one is going to step in your yard or house without you knowing about it. Hats off to all of our guardy barky, squeaky, howly GSP's!!!

There was an article in the newspaper here about home breakins in the northern suburbs. Long story short, a family in Westminster with a GSP who looks a lot like Molly were robbed in the middle of the night with the family in the house. The dog woofed once and went back to sleep. So much for all GSPs having the protective instincts. Our second GSP used to have people who rang our doorbell move several feet back from the front door when she went barking when the doorbell rang. I loved it when strangers came around at night because no one wanted me to open the door.

I do agree a dog should bark when needed!  That is why i taught inside voice as a command.  He will quiet down when i need him too or want him too, but he still knows he can bark.  He is good about not barking at usual things now, but if he sees something or hears something odd he will bark!

Marie - Rocky isn't the only one with a deep bark.  Our oldest female, Belle, has the deepest bark we have ever heard.  She didn't bark until she was about 6 months old and when we heard her bark for the first time we looked around thinking there was another dog somewhere.  Belle is a big female at 57lbs, but she has a bark that puts larger dogs to shame.  When people hear it they take several steps back.   She is also a great guard dog as she only barks when she hears or sees something in near the house, and once we check and tell her it is ok she is fine.

On the other hand, Halo, our youngster barks at squirrels, noises, things she suspects may be around, and anything in general.  She also has a higher pitched bark.  She is also the one that talks to us and makes all the odd sounds.  Our neighbor came over to investigate when she heard Halo as she thought there might be something wrong with her.  She didn't know we were home and was concerned.  As it turned out there was nothing wrong, just a GSP making those weird noises.

That is EXACTLY what happened with Bo. The first time I heard that woof  it scared the c*** out of me  Now he gives anyone he sees through the window the first deep "woof". If they choose to disregard it,  then he'll bark until we see what's up. I agree it does tend to make the door-to-door salepeople a little leery of staying longer than they need to.

We had a new washer and dryer delivered a while ago and the two guys (big) were afraid that Hunter was going to come through the door. Funny cause he's a baby but sure did intimidate the crap out of those delivery men!
