I'm just curious. I have a strong preference for males (regardless of breed but am asking specific to GSP/DK). I prefer the look of the males, the usually larger size, the deep chest, and something about the personality. Nothing I can really itemize.
For what reasons would you choose one over the other? (excluding breeding considerations) |

| After researching GSP's exclusively before purchase, I found the female is slightly smaller than the male. That and the fact that my last dog (a beagle male) had a lot of male-dog habits that I found unattractive. Thus, we now have Sadie who is almost 18-months old. She stands about 23-24 inches tall and weighs about 48 pounds. Some say her weight is low, but she is lean and in tremendous condition from all the exercise we get. Not an ounce of fat on her. She's a she. Great demeanor and fun all the time. |

| My preference for females is strictly because of the male marking behaviors. I have a lot of flowers and bushes in the yard and do not like them peed all over. Other than that...no preference. |

| I love both the males and the females. I have 3 females and 1 male. My boy is definitely a momma's boy and he works so hard for me, but them my females all work hard for me too. The girls mature faster and they do not test you quite as much as the males do. The boys are a lot more daring than the girls. The girls more cautious. I love them both though and would take both in a heart beat. I would say thought that if I had gotten Ringo first, I might have seriously considered my choice of breeds a bit longer. He was a real challenge and continues to require my full attention. He has also taught my girls things that they never would have considered doing pre-Ringo. |

| We have one of each and she is BOSSY but I love it! The new thing at the door when Windsor is patiently waiting to come in is "Lady's First" cuz she will practically step all over him to be first in and first out but he doesn't care. Lou wants to nickname him Skittles because she's got more guts than he does. He only challenges her when she's running fast and he'll chase her but he poops out faster than she does. |

| Bitches rule in the shorthair world. A long time ago my breeder told me that and I did not really believe it at first, but I have seen it first hand over and over. |

| I have to say the boys steal my heart. I have one of each (plus a female mutt) and like Bev says - bitches rule. My boy came from our first litter and his is the most laid back dog. He does whatever it takes to please me, whereas I find my girl (who is still intact) always has an agenda. She is also more needy and demanding (at the moment she is on my lap trying to get me to get her a cookie). When I breed her next year, I'm really hoping to keep a male to help even things out. My fiance, on the other hand, prefers the females. Go figure... |

Probably prefer the girls but think its a subconscious thing for both of us. I grew up with many male german sheperd police dogs that were well trained but could be affectionate too. The first was wonderful, a really loving dog who also managed to win national awards for tracking and catching some very nasty criminals. We lost him when i was 8 years old. After him no other came close until the german wirehaired pointer explosives search dog who came along many years later when i was 19, the first bitch we had, she stole my heart and was my reason for really pushing for a pointer (but a shorthair this time). My other half grew up with golden retriever bitches and feels the same, its the bitches we both associate affection with. Just our experiences but i know the males are capable of the same. I have also been traumatised by working at a boarding kennels where i had to clean up after certain dogs repeatedly and regularly marking the yard - obviously due to being in kennels with other dogs, but the worst culprits were 3 gsps from the same family (including the bitch)
I do think though that we maybe would consider a male as a second dog once we have trained Keely (only 12 days and 6 minutes til we get her ) |

| I have one of each and no preference really? They both have their quirks and individualities but then I'm sure if I'd had two boys it'd have been the same. Keira is quite a bit smaller than Bentley, surprisingly so actually. She's at about 23kg now and Bentley is up to 34kg. Quite a bit of difference! But I have no preference over which one and in the future it would affect my choice of puppy. |

Thank you all for the input - as I said I was just curious. I think that the differences in personality are what I have seen with most breeds; that being the females are more serious, can be bossy, and I find the females more vocal. They also seem to mature more quickly. Bev I also think some of what I love about the males is how you describe Ringo and has certainly contributed to my struggles with Bugsy. He is so much better and easier to handle now than he was I think it is easy to forget how challenging our first few years were AND as I have said publicly here we still have challenges that I am sure to some sound like me not working him hard enough but I can assure you it is more about him than me LOL Anyway I know I would enjoy a male or female GSP but I definitely lean towards the males |

I have one of each and love them both for different reasons. Bo is a momma's boy (soooo sweet and lapping up the love), but is challenging in terms of getting him to settle down when YOU want him to settle down. Although he knows his commands better than Shiraz, getting him to LISTEN to them is hit or miss! Raz is fiercely independent and totally a momma-dog. She like to take control of every situation, which some dogs do not appreciate. However, when you want to crash, she wants to crash with you. |

I have two females and they could not be more different. My older GSP will never settle down until she is about to pass out. My other GSP does settle down and likes to snuggle. Now the older GSP loves to be with you and will not go outside unless you go with her, but the one that likes to snuggle, if you open the door she is all for going outside, with our with you. So they are totally different, even though two females.
But I will say that I chose a female because of the smaller size. |

I don't care what gender a dog is - I love 'em all. We have 2 males now because I have a breeding plan. I would prefer to use my males as stud, rather than a dog I really didn't know too well,or at all. |

I've grown up with a three different Golden Retrievers, two males and one female, a female Yorkie, and a female shitzhu. All the females were content to do their own things and they only really sought out their one person, usually the person who fed them most. Both males followed us around the house and literally wanted to be touching you at all times! They didn't even care which person, they just wanted someone to love them.
My ex-boyfriend was the one who introduced me to GSP's and he insisted on a female because he wanted to breed her down the road. Though I fell in the love with the breed, her behaviour reflected the other females I had been around and was only further heightened by that "velcro-dog" attitude of the GSP. Nothing I said or did could interest her.
So this time around, I wanted a male. My boyfriend also wanted a male. Ryder is amazing and though he challenges us, I prefer his behaviour. We will probably stick to males for all future dogs. We also want boys when we have kids, too bad we don't have control over that! |

Remz is my first male, and not sure if its just the GSP thing, or that he's a male but I'm thinking my next dog will be a male GSP. I've just fallen head over heals for him. My girls are great- just something about Remz that has my heart. |
