It has come up on here about being such great exercise for dog and person, and great fun, but does anyone do it?

The 7 months of winter in Cleveland is going to be here soon and I want to try it, but I'm not totally convinced and want to hear fantastic (an horrible) tales of it. It seems to me there are a lot more places to cross country ski than rollerblade great distances, at least around here.

I will add that Cooper has a crossback harness and I have the belt because we go rollerblading. He stays in front of me but doensn't really pull (okay with me cause he's a 10m pup).

ps. I've never been cross country skiing, so it'll be an adventure. I know how to down hill ski and am generally fairly athletic, so I've got high hopes.

First thing to do is to learn how to cross-country ski. You don't want to be learning while your dog is pulling you. Make sure you know how to stop!

We haven't yet gone there with our dogs, but do lots of dryland training with them (scootering and cani-cross).

I skijor some, just started 2 years ago. My older GSP Oskar is so eager to please he took to it right away and is pretty careful with me. I got skis and 'taught' myself for only about a week before I hooked up to a dog because I was too impatient to wait LOL! I would not really recommend that--I was lucky with Oskar because he is so careful with me and would stop when I fell. I added my border collie with him last year as well. I now have become brave enough to want to try my younger GSP Ozzy....he's a little high-powered, to put it mildly. I hooked him up with Oskar on the bike last night--WOW. Oskar usually goes at a pretty good, ground eating trot, especially with the border collie. But Ozzy wanted to haul and Oskar was happy to oblige.....might be a little scary on skis LOL!!

Skijoring is a lot of fun, a great way to keep dogs fit in the winter, and also a great way to help YOU get through winter, since you're getting out and being active. I'd definitely recommend it : )
