Just curious. How many of you have GSP's because you use them for hunting and how many have them because they are just a great breed? Mine is a great pet, although not so good in the field right now. |

I don't hunt so I got Bearoff just because I liked GSPs. I do have a bunch of land in the country so he gets to run around and "hunt" on his own all the time. He is fun to watch. He cruises around with his nose to the ground all the time, mostly on the edge of the fields or where the grass/weeds were mowed and where they were not. He stops sticks his nose into the grass and sniffs and they steps back and moves to the next place, back and forth along the edge line. |

Hunting. My boyfriend Jim has always been an avid hunter. When it was time for us to get a dog we wanted a breed that would excel not only in the field but in the home. After a ton of research we chose to get a GSP. The rest is history! Were addicted! |

| I got my first GSP as companion, then started competing in obedience. I then got my second GSP and got into conformation. By my third GSP I got into Hunt Tests. First and foremost though my GSPs are companions. I also now do therapy work with my GSPs and dabble in flyball and agility. All because I thought it would be nice to look at a litter of shorthairs about this time of year 8 years ago. |

Both, we both enjoy the excitement of the hunt and resourcefulness of bringing home food. Unfortunately with busy schedules we only got a chance to actually hunt only a handful of days so far, hopefully things slow down before the season is over. He has been turning into a pet this year... Although we never turn down the opportunity to practice on the Hungarian partridges in the grassy areas here in the city... Didn't know much about the GSP breed before getting him, and have learned lots since then. What a colorful breed indeed! |

We got Kintra as a companion for all our activities. We dont hunt but like being outdoors and do a lot of camping (now campervanning) around Scotland. My dad had a wirehair for explosives detection and although there are differences in the breed, her loyalty and intelligence blew me away. We had working german sheperds and a pet labrador - loved them but there was just something special about the pointer, as if she was born wise and just knew things other dogs dont pick up on with people. I knew a gsp would be more exuberant so we decided the gsp was for us. We take her everywhere with us so she's very much a pet but my dream would be to have a little extra land to give her some freedom to mooch around and use her instincts a little more. We are surrounded by fields but this is sheep/gun-toting farm country and although i've worked on desensitizing her to sheep she's still a little unpredictable. I would consider doing some hunty stuff to keep her entertained (i know she's too old to start training for serious hunting) and i do actually feel a little guilty for not doing what she is designed for despite the fact that i put a lot of time and research into mentally stimulating her in other ways. We've started agility and i was starting to buiild us both up for canix until she got sick this week. Hopefully, we can pick up where we left off soon. |

mine were for pets but I bought the last 2 from a breeder that runs a hunting preserve and invited me to their bird classes. That was 6 years ago. I now have 2 steady to wing and shot dogs. I don't hunt but take them out to train and have fun. |

Well actually our first GSP was a conformation and performance, mostly for agility, but she is also doing obedience. We currently do not hunt and the only test we have done with a bird, is the water retrieve at the NSS which she did awesome at. Living near the lake has made her an awesome swimmer. Of course, she learned how to swim so well from our lab Gabby.
Our newest GSP is for the same. Not likely we will do any sort of hunting, but we are thinking about it. Thought it would be something nice to do with my husband to do some hunt tests, but will determine that after he finishes his treatments for cancer.
But really foremost, they are our companions. |

| I did a fair amount of research before I pitched the GSP breed to my husband. Although we aren't hunters and have no intention of hunting with Sophie, the breed had all the other characteristics I was looking for in a dog. We had seen a GSP puppy years ago and thought he was the coolest and then there was a litter of puppies 5 minutes away so that sealed the deal. We picked up Sophie two weeks later and have no regrets. She's so much fun as a puppy and I'm really looking forward to the things I'm planning on doing with her once she's old enough. |

Sophie... what a great name. Our last pointer was named Sophie, which we rescued. She passed a year ago from Liver Cancer at about the age of 14. Sadie is our new dog. She is definately for Hunting, as was Sophie, although my wife is making Sadie quite the cuddler as well (as she did with Sophie). I would say she is a good housedog - she even cleans! (off the counters... and table... (uh-oh... trouble!)). |

It is watching the dogs work that I thoroughly enjoy, and love. I could get by with just watching them work - if it weren't for all the training, and the joy they exhibit when you pick-up a bird that they pointed. - Todd |

Sadie also like to jump (a LOT!). When we are in the field, and I praise her, she can get clear up to my nose (I am 6'3") and nip it. I have considered entering her in DockDogs. Here is a picture of her "flying" off a dock - her summer love.
