I know this has probably been discussed before but couldnt find any posts.  I have been gradually moving Kintra onto a premade BARF diet for the last 2 months because she has had itchy skin problems her whole life.  She has had a variety of meds from the vet, a hypo allergenic kibble, then a grain-free kibble (helped a little but not comletely).

She is now getting Acana in the morning and raw in the evening in the hope of going fully raw soon.  Although she loves eating the Acana and the BARF (was a picky eater previously) she seems to always try to eat a lot of grass the following morning (the raw being her most recent meal before eating grass).  Like a lot of dogs she has always eaten a little grass here and there but now she's really determined to fill up on it in the morning.  She's fine during the day and after her Acana breakfast.  Do you think its a sign the raw isnt agreeing with her? Her poo is fine all the time although more of it after digesting the Acana.

Sorry, i meant to add the all-important point about this.  Her itchy skin problems have pretty much disappeared almost instantly since beginning the BARF (despite still being on kibble too ).  Thats why i would really like to persevere with the BARF but not if its upseting her stomach.

Another strange thing is that before we saw her at 6 weeks old she had developed a mobile lump on her head.  We always thought it was possibly a bite injury from a litter mate or a lump of veins (apparently a common cause of lumps and nothing to worry about according to the vet).  Anyway, the lump completely disappeared after 1 week on the BARF, probably a coincidence but strange all the same.

I sure don't have a definitive answer - however my dog has serious allergies too and I feed Orijen Fish (he can't have poultry or egg) and raw.
He goes through streaks of waking up and having urgent need to eat/chew grass AND this is much more likely after he's had a raw meal. I have tried to figure this out for ages and have not come up with an answer I'm afraid.
I haven't gone full raw due to cost but I do wonder if that would help.
He does so well on the Orijen that I won't change that
Lastly that is very interesting about the lump and great stuff!

I don't feed raw or know anything about it...once in a while I do make satin balls and that is raw ground beef or I'll give a raw chicken breast...I am wondering if when you feed raw if you add veggies or is it just meat type foods...I know there are veggies that are good for dogs...

Don't know what type of grass you are talking about, but mine love sweet new green grass (like the grasses found in meadows, fields, etc, not St Ausgustine) regardless of what their previous meal was. So it might just be that he likes the grass that is growing right now. Also, if you do not know what your dog was allergic to in the first place he may still be eating (yes, even with a raw diet) the food that bothered him and he may have an upset stomach and is eating grass for that reason. My girl, Belle, is allergic to beef. I had to switch to a food with no beef, so understanding what the actual food allergy is may help.

Thanks for your input everyone!  The raw food is a premade one by a company that specialise and includes 20% veg, fruit, spiralina and barley oat grass and things to help with digestion.  I know some raw feeding purists say that given half a chance dogs would eat grass, regurgitate it then eat it again, almost like eating small animals whole in the wild including the semi digested contents of the stomach.  It does make sense i suppose.  Its just normal parkland grass she eats.  She did really enjoy the orijen and the acana, i only wanted to try raw to help her allergies and unfortunately its the only thing that has helped.  She has been on hypo allergenic diet before, one with pork and potato which was unsuccessful, then with chicken and brown rice, again unsuccessful.

Since my last post earlier today my other half has phoned to say she hasnt eaten anything at all today, is shakey, and just sleeping so unfortunately we're going to take her to the vet tonight to check her over  i'm also worried that maybe its doggy food poisoning although i'm obsessive about the storage, temp and handling of her food to the point of OCD.  I looked into the company and they've won awards for their standards of prep and sourcing to the point that i'm almost tempting to cook kintras food for our dinner instead of the pale watery chicken fillets i get from asda

Thanks again everyone cos i'm really worried about her (after me telling someone else on this forum not to worry because they are such resilient dogs)

first I hope she is fine!!
and LOL about the ASDA chicken - I lived in Manchester for 7 yrs and did my best to NEVER buy asda/tesco/etc meats. We had a Costco and Makro nearby and a decent butcher :)

You know it could be the spiralina or oat grass or other veg that she is allergic to in the prepared raw. You might try and use just meat, bone and offal. The butcher we went to had a pet mince that was fairly balanced and always had bones available. I so wish I could find that sort of butcher here!!

Bugsy has severe allergies to the poultry and eggs but no other proteins, however, he has a bunch of environmental allergies which are generally held in check BUT when I, on the recommendation of someone, gave him aloe juice to help his digestive tract after he had gotten sick this summer, I discovered that was yet another allergy. So she could just be reacting to something in the raw

Bev, Bugsy does love fresh new grass just because its yummy (apparently) but he has these times where he is desperate to go out and he just chews and chews any grass he can. These are the times I was referring to. he doesn't get sick from it and just does it for a bit then comes in and eats and is as normal. I chalk it up to may be being part cow or goat ;) I have discussed it with 3 vets who just shrugged.

I wouldn't think it was something wrong with the food - dogs are fabulous at eating rotten stuff and being fine. Fingers crossed you can figure this out!

I can see a possible issue with oat grass and spiralina.
I would consider using kelp and alfalfa instead, if you wanted to add the "greens".

Have you considered using homemade raw?
I like this b/c it is so flexible.

Disclaimer: I am lazy and do not feed raw.

Just back from the vet.  He's quite concerned because she has a temp of 103 and shallow breathing.  She's been given an antibiotic and we've to go back in the morning.  I know a lot of the possible outcomes of these symptoms and dont really want to think about it, hopefully i'm overreacting.

Please send your thoughts Kintras way tonight, its going to be a long night!!

Thanks for all your kind words and support.  We slept in the living room with her last night and she didnt really settle all night.  Any time i touched her even lightly or if she moved her breathing became very shallow and fast, and lots of shivering.  She was VERY lethargic and depressed this morning to begin with but then after a pee she perked up a little.  Happy to say that her breathing calmed down a little then we went back to the vet.  She wasnt her usual exuberant self but she was certainly perkier whilst there. He thought her breathing was better than the previous night but her temperature was still the same so decided to sedate her and take abdominal and chest x rays.  They seemed clear so her bloods have been sent away.  I'm relieved that nothing showed up on the xrays but shes not really improving any more (although her breathing is still a little calmer than last night).  We've to go back again tomorrow morning to have her temperature checked again but i'm now starting to doubt myself and every decision i have made about her health  maybe her immune system has been compromised by changing her diet all the time sort out her allergies. She's just lying on the floor just now, cant even be bothered to go another few steps to her bed, i feel so helpless.

Took  her to the vet this morning and her temperature is back to normal  although she's still quite raspy and breath, especially after moving around.  He gave her a cortisone jag and we'll find out the blood results tomorrow. It was such a nice day i mentioned it was a shame we couldnt take her to the beach but vet said to give it a try and see if she perks up.  Well she had a wee sniff about but didnt really bother with other dogs (definately not her usual self) and another dog owner asked "is she quite old?". normally people assume she's really young because she is wild when she's at the beach, i think she's moving slowly and cautiously as if she has painful joints (sounds like something viral or an infection).  We came home and i offered her some green tripe and she practically inhaled it so the cortisone is definately helping her appetite. She has since had a lump of cheese and finger fed some peanut butter and the shakey legs have pretty much gone  She seems to be getting back to her old self although still breathy and tiring easily but i'm sure that'll sort itself out with time, rest and catching up on all the grub she's missed.  Will update about her results tomorrow - and thanks again everyone for the positive words xxx

glad she's eating and the shakes are gone. I'm not surprised though that she wasn't herself at the beach, she's had a bad few days!
Continued thoughts and prayers
AND I hope you get a clear answer as to what is happening
