Hey Guys!

I need to pick your brains! My Dad and I are coming to do a bit of sightseeing in the US next year around April/May time for 10 days.

Our provisional plan is to fly into Orlando, FL, travel up to Nashville (my Dad is Presley-Obsessed!) and then head up to possibly New York area and fly back home from there.

I would love to meet up with some of you guys as I am coming across the pond!

My geography is absolutely pants so I don't know where any of you live or if you would be close to my route!

Also I would love some suggestions of things to see around that area. I think we are going to spend a few days in Florida and possibly Miami before we start driving.

Thanks

For Elvis, the Graceland mansion is in Memphis, TN.

I'm not a big Elvis fan but I think everyone knows Graceland is in Memphis. (at least if you don't live under a rock - see the Geico commercial )

When you set the dates, let us know. Maybe the PA folks can do a get together to meet you.

Well I am way off your current route, but if you ever come to TX, Austin (where I live is the capital) and there are lot's of cool things to do here. We are the Live Music capital and home of South by Southwest and Austin City Limits. Additionally, we have the University of TX here, the state capital, the state cemetery (lot's of the historical TX figures are buried there), etc. Just down the road is San Antonio with the historic River Walk and the historic Spanish mission trail, the zoo and SeaWorld. Lot's of TX history too between San Antonio and Austin. So would be glad to show you guys around. However, on your current route it would be about a two day drive out of your way to come to TX. So maybe next time.

Just an aside, you do realize that the route you are proposing is a considerable amount of driving. So you might want to think about that in your planning if you only plan to be here for 10 days that route may not give you much time in any one stop along the route.

We're in NYC.
Let me know what foods you'd like to eat - you want to eat it- it's HERE!

We are in the New Orleans, Louisiana, area.  A little out of your path, but New Orleans is a very unique city, lots of good food and music!  I agree with Bev though, a drive from Orlando to New York through Nashville, that is alot of driving to do in 10 days and to take time to see the sites.  If you decide to add New Orleans to one of your destinations, certainly let me know!

You'll be going right by me in W.V. Shelley, within 45 minutes of me going up I81 in fact. What might you most enjoy? Depending on the when, I might be able to show you to a Field Trial or Hunt Test; or if you like grand views and wild areas, lots of National Forest and natural scenery; D.C. has all kinds of Museums/History/Arts?etc...

I'd be happy to offer some ideas or suggestions if you can tell me what you might most enjoy :-)

Orlando to Memphis is 13 hours and that is without stops for gas or eating or potty breaks....Memphis to New York is 18 hours without stops....some people would drive those 2 straight thru but if you are stopping to see things you might break each into 2 days...so that would be 4 days of your 10 days just driving...I put Memphis and not Nashville, however from Memphis to NY you would go thru Nashville...

I think you should ditch going to New York and come to Chicago/Rockford IL and see me, LOL! I can take you to the barn and see the horses you can learn some trick riding and maybe my team would have a performance...

It's may be cheaper and definitely easier to fly from destination to destination.
The miles and state-to-state on the rental car may put a dent in your sight seeing wallet.
Do research on rental deals, make sure you get it in writing.
Jet Blue has good prices.

All that driving is hard, unless you have sights along the way.
10 days is not a lot and I'd think you want to "touch and feel" rather than watch it fly by in a car. Jet lag sets in on the 3rd day,or there abouts, driving is a b--ch when your pooped out.

I know my family and family friends of ours usually take 2 weeks (14 days) just to do our bigger camping trips (like we drove from Illinois to Arizona it took us 4 days there and 4 days back so the rest of the days were for having fun)...

I think it may be an idea to fly from Florida to Nashville - then drive the rest?

I have to say that I agree with everyone who is saying that it is an enormous amount of driving. However, it would be a fabulous way to see the eastern US.  I'm not sure how much you've traveled in the states, though?? It's so very much different, and a tad less convenient, than traveling around Europe because everything is so BIG.

I would look in to getting a flight from miami, FL to Mephis, TN and then driving up through the mountains to your final destination.

I have friends who were just here from New Zealand who hired a car and ended up paying hundreds of dollars extra for insurance... check if your credit card will cover car insurance in the states- might save you a bunch.

Safe travels!!!!

If your final destination is NYC, it would be best to fly there from TN.
NYC has a lot to see, you will need time and want to be rested.

If you want to experience NYC like a New Yorker - let me know.
It's an art - ya know.

Try to book a Broadway show before you leave the UK. Broadway CAN'T be missed!

1) Memphis, Memphis, Memphis for elvis. Plus the BBQ is top noch!
2) As a thought...maye you may think about planning your trip around the next shorthair meet up? Then you could meet everyone at once.
3) Is Hogan joining you? It may be a nice treat for him get on some American game. Someone here may be willing to bring you along for a walk.
4) Don't drive if you can unless you have alot of time and $$.

another opinion--I would definitely drive, depending on how long you are planning on being here. Driving the east coast is pretty interesting. My family is all from england, and I've driven lots of miles over there and I love it. The thing about the US is that it is HUGE, but the interstates are generally great and it doesn't take long relatively to cover massive distances. For example, I've done the drive from the south of england (portsmouth) up to the west coast of scotland (isle of mull) in a long long day. In around the same time, you can drive from florida to new york even though it is many many more miles.

Rental cars and gas are both super cheap over here compared to england/europe. South of washington DC, there are plenty of cheap hotels the whole way up interstate 95.

The problem with going to Memphis is that you miss the coast and you'll be driving through the county, which would definitely be interesting--in a different way.
