Hi everyone.  I've been reading the forum for a few weeks, but this is my first time to post.  I have a 7 month old female Shorthair.  She is a petite dog.  I wouldn't say her torso is skinny (not fat either but not skinny) but she has thin legs, small paws, a small head, etc. (overall a petite, small boned dog).  Both of her parents were on the small side.  She currently weighs around 30 lbs.  She is high energy and gets plenty of exercise.  She loves to play with bigger dogs.  She is a picky eater.  Sometimes she eats well and sometimes she doesn't.  I feed (Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul) her 3 cups (spread out over two feedings) a day and on average she ends up eating a little over 2 cups per day.  She usually eats some out of the bowl by herself and then I have to feed her by hand to try to get her to eat more.  I don't mind that she's a small dog but have been thinking about supplementing her food to promote a little weight gain.  Is this recommended for a 7 month old puppy?  I've heard about pouring a little goat's milk on top of her food and have seen the recipe for satin balls on here as well.  What does everyone think?  Thanks in advance

Hi and welcome.
How about a picture?
For her size and eating amount - it sounds about right.
Shorthairs are thin.
She is still growing and I'm afraid she is in that disproportionate stage.

I would supplement with yogurt or goats milk and other high protein foods. The satin balls is great for adding weight, the dogs generally will gobble it up and you can mix it with her regular food. I would stop the hand feeding or you will create a different problem. You can also add things like sardines which the dogs love too. I would also switch her to an adult food that is high in protein and fat. There are many really good brands out there to choose from. I would look for a food that is grain free with the first two or three ingredients meat. Protein around 32% and fat around 15%. Innova, Taste of the Wild, Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Blackwood, and several others are some good choices, but there are many others.

im no expert like many on here but you may just have a smaller dog. I have a very petite dog as well. At 7 months she weighed 20lbs. We are about 1 year later and she ways around 38. So i would imagine your pup will be close to that 40-45 lbs which is about right for smaller females.

wow, 20lbs at 7 months? Keira is about 6.5months now and she's at about 22kg. Which is about 48lbs.

Our Shiraz at 7yo is at her best weight at 40lbs soaking wet. She is a small (but powerful) GSP.

Hi and welcome! I too joined the forum recently and Sophie is 20lbs at 3 months. She's very skinny with all ribs showing. We feed her the recommended amount but all the food seems to go into her legs - she's so tall all of a sudden! I'm super curious about how big she's going to get. Her mom is about 50lbs and dad about 60lbs I think. Anyone have a guess as to how big she'll be?

Christine ... based on the parents, she will likely end up somewhere in the 50lb range.

I would agree with Joce, most of the time the parents are the best indicator of the size of the pup. My newest addition, Fauna, who is a 14 months weighs in at 47 lbs. Her mom, Halo, is 50 lbs. Fauna is about an inch shorter than her mother too. Halo is on the upper edge in height for a GSP bitch, so when I bred her I went for an average size male. I did not want a bigger male too, because I wanted my puppies to hopefully be in the middle of the size range for shorthairs. So all 3 of the female puppies are smaller than there mother, and all the 8 males are about average size for males as well.

Thanks! We're hoping she'll be max in the 50lbs but based on her paws, we were getting worried!

It is hard to determine what their final weight and size will be.  My Java weighed 41 pounds at 8 months.  She is now almost 15 months and she weighs 47 pounds and is about 21 1/2" at the withers.  I really like her size, still a powerhouse of muscle, but she fits nicely in a smaller crate!  Not to mention, I can pick her up if I need to.  Actually she still likes to be picked up, she is very funny . . . its like wow, I can see so much better from up here!

Just so you get a better idea, Java and Fauna are sisters from the same litter. Fauna is a bit taller than Java, but they are the same weight.

Roz -- Razzie loves to be picked up. What the girl lacks in size and weight, she makes up for in grit and determination. :D

It's the size of the 'heart' that counts.

Christine, if you're a bit worried the Sophie is getting leggy then be mindful of how much exercise she is getting. Too much and she'll be out of proportion and end up a bit leggy :)

I too agree with pixie bee.  I know my Java is so sweet but tough when she needs to be and ready to work.  So she has a big heart inside that smaller frame.  It is funny as she trys to make herself taller around my other GSP Maple.  Their play jousting is pretty funny to watch as she desperately tries to hold her head higher than Maple.

Thanks to everyone for the advice.  I have sprinkled a little goat milk on top of her food for the last few feedings and she has cleaned her bowl in under 10 minutes every time.

my gsp dunkan is at times reluctant to eat.  especially when there's people around or he knows he's going hunting (all i have to do is take out the gun and it's game time for him).  i'll throw a little peanut butter on his food and it'll be gone in an instant.  it's also good for lasting energy.  he is almost 16 months now and weighs a solid 73 lbs and i can still see those last few ribs!  he's a big boy!
