If Winsor hasn't started howling yet, and Velvet hasn't started whining, I'd say you are okay....:) I don't think I have to state the obvious, but just in case.....the panties, diapers, etc. whatever you
choose to call them...willl NOT prevent a breeding, or even an outside tie. She shouldn't be spayed while in season (and most vets won't anyway) due to the increased blood vessels, etc in the abdomen/pelvic area.
So, keep her crated (she'll learn to keep herself clean) and play musical dogs for the next 21 days. You can gently scratch at the base of the tail on the back to see if she "flags"-moves her tail to one side to allow
the male to breed her. That is also a clue as to where she is in her cycle, but do NOT assume that just 'cause she isn't flagging yet she can't be bred. Good luck. I just returned from shows near Albuquerque to find
my brood bitch in season so I'll be heading for Houston probably mid-week for a frozen semen breeding I've been waiting for for 19 years. No doubt, Miss Hailey will pull my other girls in also-its a hormonal thing.

And we had a GREAT two weekends of shows too...a new champion (first day of the first weekend), singled out my field trial girl and 8 GCh points on the newly finished pupster (Ch* Singltrak ROTFLMAO) now 15 months old.

Kim, why did your vet say to wait... for a heat??? Kind of scary unless you want an oooppps... I would have gotten one or the other fixed asap, cause anything can happen... Had it happen to my Black Lab... didn't even know she was in heat.. she was less than a year old... the traveling salesman came through our yard... next thing we knew ... she was pg... with 12 puppies!!!  Hope this does not happen to you!!!

From other post I assume the vet wanted her to wait cuz Velvet was under weight and I think had worms or some other health issue and I think going into a cycle would let them know that things were going better and she was healthy...

Thanks for all the advice - she is doing fine. It's not easy not letting them be together though. I walked them this morning and put her out in the pen and Windsor stayed inside with me all day - sleeping mostly and keeping me company as I did some things around the house. Brought her back in, fed them, let them run (supervised) crated her, went out to eat and now back home. She is laying down next to Lou and he is laying down next to me. Vet said it's heat. I was supposed to bring a urine sample this morning but didn't have luck with it. Trying again tomorrow and hopefully dropping it off on Monday. I have to bring a stool sample also but that's easy. Velvet did not sit still to pee for me to get the sample. Even on a leash she wants to run. She has had no training from the previous owner - nothing at all - she is basically wild but has calmed down and is getting better each day. Like Splat said, the vet wouldn't spay her because we had to finish up with the worms and she came to us pretty thin and balding. All her hair is back, she is putting on the weight and in 5 weeks vet said we can get her done. Windsor will be after that. I probably should have had Windsor done when we first got him but we didn't end up doing it.

They are both doing well - she doesn't mind the panty on her at all. I was going to do the pull ups until I saw how much they cost so I got a washable panty and put panty liners in them - been checking that it isn't chafing her. I only put it on her when they are both in the house together. If nobody is supervising, she goes out in the pen and he's inside. She is in her kennel at night. I am trying my best to keep an eye on them and I've been reading that day 8 or 9 once she started with the bleeding that is her fertile time. So today is Day 5. I tried again for a pee sample today - had her on leash and she is learning "go potty" but she didn't. As soon as I put her in the back yard and unleashed her she went. So will try again in a little while. Supposed to be dropping off that and a stool sample tomorrow - well I got the stool sample but that's it so far. So as long as she's in the house with Windsor and we're around, she wears her little blue panties. She's not much of a complainer - with anything, she's just a little wild out in the yard - runs and never stops. We've got a "track" around the back now from her. When we walk she is a little angle - loves the neighborhood, no more chasing rabbits and squirrels - the e collar did the trick with that! Don't even have to turn it on anymore - if I just put it on her turned off, she heels right by my side.

Be careful on assuming day 8 or 9 is it. The mating time is not an exact science and what Phyllis suggested is a much more accurate way to tell when they are ready to mate. With Halo's litter a year ago I wanted to optimize my chances of her getting pregnant as she was older and I didn't want to wait another 9 months (Halo is every 9 months), so we did progesterone testing and she was ready on day 14. In talking to by repro vet some are ready as early as day 5 and some as late as day 20 and everything in between. This is just meant as a word of caution. The numbers you are reading about are averages. Also, as Phyllis said those panties are not going to keep Windsor from getting to her and you would be amazed at how quickly they can tie.

My nerves are shot. I can't wait until she is spayed. She's doing good and Windsor is ok with her and we're keeping an eye on her but she's got a pee problem. If I don't let her out every single hour, she'll go inside. It's gotten worse since her heat. Just got through mopping the kitchen floor. She wasn't in more than an hour and she went - all over the place - luckily on the floor in the kitchen. Glad it happened on a Sunday when I was relaxed versus coming home late and stressed out from work. She isn't well trained but I think the heat is making her pee worse - I got a sample because she pee'd with her panties on with a maxi pad so I squeezed it into a bottle. I'm hoping this subsides after her heat and once I get her fixed or she's going to be an outdoor dog which is not what I wanted her to be full time. Even Lou said she is "difficult" and he's had gsp's all his life. For the urine, I think she is getting tested for pyometra - the vet mentioned that. Lou has to leave for work by 5 a.m. - we never put her out that early in the pen but I told him tomorrow he has to for my sanity.
