Been noticing some things with velvet - she seems swollen "down there" and Windsor is constantly sniffing her. When she got off her dog bed last night he immediately went on and was licking it. She is also licking "down there" and her teats seem bigger. I tried wiping her with a tissue to see if I could see blood but I don't see any. She's been very "velcro" and very "cuddly" - more than normal. Not showing any signs of pain. She is eating and drinking the same. Could that explain some indoor pee accidents she's having? I am now crating her at night which she doesn't mind (and hasn't peed in) but Windsor goes in with her (it's a really big crate) and I have a hard time getting him out. So last night I let them out for their last round of business and he was right behind her sniffing her and normally she beats him up when he does this but she doesn't care now. Same thing this morning. Windsors eyes are WIDE OPEN and he's licking his chops when he sniffs around her. The two sleep fine - pretty much next to one another when we are home but not sure we should leave them together unsupervised? I was going to keep him in tomorrow and put her out since she likes it better outside than he does. She's an angel besides the accidental peeing. And he's all worked up lately. When do I get her fixed? Vet said when she goes through a heat. If this is a heat, how can I tell when she is done? I only have had male dogs up until we got her. |

| I can't remember if this is her first season or not, but normally the boys know long before they start dripping. I am betting if she is swollen and her breasts are swelling she will be dripping pretty soon. I would keep them apart starting now. Windsor is exhibiting all the signs of a male around a bitch in season. Normally from the time they start dripping it is 21 days, but it can be shorter or longer. You will be able to tell when she is done as the swelling will start to recede pretty quickly. Good luck! |

| Also you will want to keep her inside until she is done. Every male from a long distance away will be at your yard and will go to incredible lengths to get to her. Short periods outside on leash or under supervision in a fence will have to do for now. |

| Thanks! We don't have any dogs that are loose near us but maybe I'll keep her in and put Windsor out in the pen. We do have coyotes but I haven't seen them around during the day - more at sunset. Tons of deer at sunrise. Anyone ever use those doggie wraps? I see they make them for when the dogs are in heat? I would think she would just chew it off herself as I've seen her chew off a bandage when she cut her leg. |

My friend uses little boys underwear with a maxi pad and a hole cut for the tail. She said this has worked the best for her. |

While Java was in heat I used the depends, small kind, and then used duct tape so she could not pull it off. Cut a hole for the tail. I have never laughed so hard when we first put it on her. She immediately grabbed it and spun in circles and got it off. That's when the duct tape came in handy and I could secure it on her. She still grabbed at it and spun herself in circles. But she finally gave up though and became tolerable of it. |

We just used a pair of my undies with a hole cut for the tail and a safety pin to kip them snug. Shiraz never worked the safety pin free, and it was easy to get them off and on for bathroom breaks. Since Bo was neutered, we would let her go undie-free in the backyard, with supervision of course. |

| I also have used boys underwear, size small with a hole cut in the back for the tail and a panty liner inside. I wouldn't crate/confine her with the undies on! Just use them so she doesn't drip on your floors. The dog panties available at pet stores are tighter and perfect for attending a class when your girl is in heat but I feel that they are not as comfortable for lounging at home! |

I did a blog post a few months ago on Cleo's heat cycle. I go the underwear with a pad route. Click on the link below and you can see pics of my girl with her camo undies on.

I love the camo underwear - started reading the blog - it's very good - great pics!
Well came home from work and Lou said he saw tinge of blood on her. I wiped her but didn't see anything. We ate dinner and she was sitting on the kitchen floor and when she got up sure enough, blood. So ran to Walmart quick and got her some tighty-whities - I wanted the Sponge Bob Square Pants Boxers but all they had was large so she is in Haynes Child's small with a panty shield. She seems content. So can she get pregnant while she's bleeding? No, right?

| She can get pregnant at any time during her cycle. It is when she produces eggs which varies from bitch to bitch. Usually this coincides with the change to a yellowish clear discharge, but the eggs will stay viable in a bitch for several days. It is best to keep them apart for the entire duration of the heat cycle. When a bitch produces those eggs can occur early in the 21 day period or late, so from about day 6 on, but again it varies. I would suggest you err on the side of caution and keep them apart. |

| LOL well those tighty whities are not staying on. She's bleeding more now and manages to get the pants around her ankles - or windsor starts sniffing around and they come off. So I have to go get dog food today and will be picking up one of those washable velcro diaper things. Might was well as this will be going on for a while. |

| So be careful of the ones you buy in the store. If you put them on too tight and let the wear them quite a bit, then they may rub the skin between the thigh and the tummy raw. That is what happened with Halo years ago, and the kicker was she was so good she never even complained. When I saw what was happening (and it happened really fast) I was so mad at myself. I now lay big old quilts on the floor where there is carpet and just clean up where she drips on the tile and let her run around without pants. Amazingly she keeps herself very clean and there is very little dripping. When I do put something on her I use the pull ups you can buy at the grocery store for little kids or diapers. Both work pretty well. You have to cut a hole for the tail, but the stay on good. Also you don't need panty liners. Just another suggestion. BTW I now have two intact girls and although I am still waiting for Fauna to come in season for the first time, I am anticipating lots of fun and I am betting mother and daughter will not come in at the same time either. Good luck with your girl and keep the boy away from her. They can tie very quickly, quicker than you think. |

Thanks for the info Bev - maybe I'll just hit Walgreens on the way home and get the pull ups then. I don't want anything chafing her. I put her in the kennel with a blanket last night - no need to wear the pants if she's in one spot. I've got an old quilt on the futon so if she goes on that I don't care. Her personality has calmed down SO MUCH - she is so calm and has this peaceful look about her and Windsor is wide eyed and looks paranoid. He's been very good with her. He'll constantly sniff her but when I say NO he knows. She's has the undies on when she is loose in the house (but they keep falling off LOL). I actually saw a doggie chasity belt online - the things they make for dogs! |

| Just watch Windsor because as she gets to the right time for mating he will get crazier and less responsive to your commands. Some males are worse than others, but they are driven by mother nature. Velvet will also become more accommodating as well as she gets to that point where she really wants a mate. |

Now on Tuesday I left the two of them in the pen together outside while we were both at work - no sign of bleeding then but she was swollen. Husband wasn't too happy about that but I didn't think she could get pregnant then. We were going to have her spayed when we immeidately got her but the vet said no that we had to wait for a heat. So if she wasn't bleeding then could there be a slight possibility that an "oops" went on while they were in the pen unsupervised all day and she could be pregnant or do I have to wait until blood is visible? If by chance she is, nothing I can do except let her have puppies and find homes for them (I'd have to keep one or two) . But is it safe for a 6 year old female to give birth or would that be too hard on her? |

| If she was just swollen and no bleeding you are probably ok, but I would be careful from now on out. As for age to have puppies, Halo had her first litter at 5 YO. I probably would not wait that long again, but there were reasons why this time, some personal and some because Halo cycles every 9 months. |
