Also if you regularly walk the dog with leash/ whatever and show them the boundaries of your yard or property they should learn that they aren't allowed past that point. I walked mine on the check cord and let them know to stop when we reached the end of the property. Now they (except for the occasional) stay in the yard. Sometimes if they are out and find birds they will want to follow them into the field, but a quick whistle and they are right to my side. That is another good training tool. Best used with some nice treats. They really like the rewards. You just need to find what works best for your dog. Good luck

All dogs need training, all trainers need training. A rescued dog will disregard boundries to get to what they want. They probably ended up in rescue because someone gave up on training. Training a GSP from puppyhood to adulthood is one thing, trying to get into a rescued dogs head to figure out how to best train them is another thing. It all starts with check cord, so they learn who's in control. And once that is accomplished, sky's the limits!

I agree. I rescued a 10 month old female 2 years ago and she was very mistreated. You could see every bone in her body. She was the cutest little thing. I can only imagine how they treated her. I had a long time trying to get her to come around. Once they have some habits they are just about impossible to break them. She has come around very well and I'm happy to say she has turned into one heck of a dog. Still doesn't want the other dogs near me when I am holding her though. 2 years and she's still like that though.
