Thank you Hurricane Irene!!!!  Not only has Irene left us without power...(which according to our Electric Company we'll be in the dark for several more days!!) Levi and I were sprayed by a skunk last night while sitting on our front porch!!!  REALLY!!!!!!  Any suggestions on how to get the smell out???  I can honestly say that when I screamed Levi ran...so he didn't get sprayed TO badly and I immediately bathed him with cold water by candlelight!!! (not sure if that is the right thing to do or not) but his eyes were really bothering him!  I can't smell it on him to much unless I get up close to his face!  HOWEVER i smell like a real gem!!  I'm sure my co-workers are blessing me right now!

Oh no!!! My granddog got sprayed a couple weeks back. They took her to a groomer where she spent the day getting de-skunked

Try calling your vet. They usually have a remedy that might possibly work for you.

Try rubbing fresh oranges on you. The oranges tend to kill most any smell. And next time the deskunk remedy that most use is

4 cups hydrogen peroxide
4 T baking soda
1 t dish washing soap

I have never used the above. When my cocker got skunked years ago, I used Campbell's Condensed tomato soup because that was what I had in the pantry. I mixed the soup with water and rubbed it in good and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then washed her with dog shampoo and repeated the tomato soup. Worked pretty good except when she would get wet or hot and then a faint odor returned. That is when I used the oranges and they did the trick. The only down side to the tomato mixture was I had a black and white cocker when I started and after I was done she was a black and pale orange cocker. Good luck with getting your electricity back on and the skunk odor.

This is the dog recipe I have, I would think it would work on people:

Combine 1 quart hydrogen peroxide, 1/4 cup baking soda and 1 to 2 teaspoons liquid soap (Dawn works best).  Add lukewarm water if needed for large dogs.  Mix ingredients well.  The solution will fizz.  Use immediately - do not store.

Massage into the dog's coat, avoid getting it in the eyes, ears & mouth.  Allow the solution to remain on the dog for at least five minutes (longer if needed).  Rinse the dog well with lukewarm water.  Repeat as necessary until odor is gone.

My youngest dog has been skunked a couple times.  The hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, dish soap is probably the best I found.  The last time was 2 weeks before a dog show.  The above mixture got rid of 99% of the smell, but her face took a direct hit, and some lingered there.  I got suggestions of Fast Orange waterless hand cleaner (guess some groomers use that) and Nature's Miracle Skunk formula to try to nix the rest of the smell.  Both smelled great going on, but when they dried, there was no improvement above the peroxide mixture.  Like Beverly said, every time they get wet thereafter--for a few weeks, it will bring the smell to the surface.

Rayne has been skunked twice this summer and we used the recipe that stlbirddogs mentioned. It works really well. It's hard to get it all off her face just because I worried about getting soap in her eyes and ears.

Another thing that helps is vinegar & water douches. It's embarassing to buy so many at the store, but it does help. :)

ahhh how did I miss this post! Sorry to hear about it. it just happened to Joey about 6 weeks ago, and her haid STILL smells faintly of skunk when it gets wet. I honestly wouldn't wish that smell on my worst enemy.  It actually smells nothing like the smell when theres a dead skunk on the side of the road.  its about 1000x more garlicky and pungent.  yuck

She got directly sprayed in the face in our backyard, I had to pull her away from the skunk she was going to kill it.  Took her up onto the deck and she puked up foam, and had it in her eyes which were kind of glued shut. I washed her off with the hose outside while the skunk was still under the deck with dog soap to clean her eyes out, then she ran inside and rubbed everything in our house. Our house smelled for a month.

We tried the tomato juice which doesn't really do anything, and I actually read online that this approach is more a old wives tale than an actual smell remedy. We also tried the peroxide, baking soda, dish soap formula which worked better than anything else, but still, she still smells about 6 weeks later. the house doesn't smell anymore finally. anyway, its just bad news, not much you can do about it.

So I have to disagree on the tomato being an old wives tail. I had my cocker get sprayed full on and I used Campbell's tomato soup condensed on her and it worked. I did it before I used shampoo though and let it sit for about 15 minutes, then rinsed and reapplied and let it sit again for 15 minutes. I then followed that with two shampoos. It didn't get rid of the smell entirely, but it did work. What eventually got rid of the rest of the smell for me was rubbing fresh oranges on her. Fresh oranges is great at getting rid of nasty odors.

The de-skunk theory is about neutralizing the content in the skunk spray. All things acidic work to a degree. That is why things like the peroxide formula, tomato based things, oranges, etc reduce the odor. Thankfully I have not had occasion to try the peroxide formula, but I do always keep a couple of those cans of tomato soup handy in my pantry and in my RV just in case.

I don't think it is an old wives tale either...tomtatos are acidic and I think that has something to do with how it gets rid of the smell...but I don't think any thing is the miricale sure for skunk smell...

Luckly the smell seems to be out of our house for the most part!!! And i'm SO THANKFUL that Levi ran as soon as the skunk started spraying so he didn't have a whole lot on him!! You can certainly still smell it when he is real close to you and when he gets wet...and i'm sure that will last for sometime. I was just so worried when it happened because he clearly was sprayed in his face and it was really bothering his eyes! I was telling my fiance, I never in my life saw a real live skunk...so I was mortified when this happened! Especially since we were just sitting on the front porch and he came out of nowhere! No warning at all!!! Geesh!
My mom's German Shepard was sprayed a couple years ago and they used a vinger mixture on her which is what their Vet recommended. I tired the peroxide, baking soda mixture on his chest but i was afraid to use it on his face for the fear I may get it in his eyes. He doesn't like to sit still!

Also my mom was concerned because when this happen it was still farily light outside..she brought up the possibility of rabies...and I heard from someone else that Rabies can be spread through bodily funtctions...is it possible to get rabies from just being sprayed?? Levi is up to date on his rabies shots, but i was just curious??

texas belle -

Removing the smell has nothing to do with the formula being acidic. Tomato juice may mask the smell--but it won't do anything to neutralize it. The hydrogen peroxide mix is not acidic. It works by creating oxygen that neutralizes the oil from the skunk(thiols). I did spend quite a few hours researching the topic, here is an article and video from NPR "Skunked? Tomato Juice Is Not The Answer"

William Wood, chemistry professor at Humboldt, "Chemistry of Skunk Spray"

Another article "The Stinking Truth of Skunk Spray and Tomato Juice"

Apparently this guy, a chemist, is the one who came up with the peroxide formula

The moral of the story for me was to not let the pup outside after midnight.  It still could happen at anytime I guess, niqole said it was still light!  I was definitely under the impression skunks were nocturnal.

Joey - I am speaking from first hand experience and yes the tomato mixture did remove most of the smell (95%). This was definitely more than masking. So all the experts in the world can say what they want, I know it works. Whether it was the acidity or something else, frankly does not matter to me. It worked, period.
