Ok so Isabell went to her last vet appointment and well they say she is tooooooo skinny. She is at 20.6lbs has no worms and eats all day. I think she is fine but the vet tech says no well then again it was a military vet tech who didn't know she was a GSP thought she was a English Pointer. Wow She also said I should't have her run around so much since she is so skinny. Another WOW She is on Pro plan Large breed Limb and rice and has about 7 cups tottal a day. She isn't really ran that much just what she gets in the house since she doesn't like the cold here at all. So just let me know that I am not crazy and my dog is not too skinny.
Ok now here is the best part part pictures of her
Starting when we finally got home from getting her 11/13/07

Growing 12/3/07
Her colar was too big for her still

growing into her colar and won't sit her but on the cold ground

See how much bigger she has gotten since we got her

She doesn't look too skinny to me ... here's a snap of Bo at 16 weeks.

They just are all about growing at that age. I swear every day I came home from work I could see how much he had grown in a day.
BTW -- Isabell is a cutie pie! |

Skinny? Well that is a matter of opinion. She is not fat but if you were going to put any weight on her at all, I wouldn't go more then a pound or 2. When people say your dog needs to loose or gain weight you have to remember if a dog adjust 1 pound it's like a person adjusting 10. It sounds like this vet wasn't very bright if they didn't even know what breed she was & mis-staked her for a breed that has longer hair. I'm surprised that vet didn't notice her floating rib since they examined her so closely. I noticed it in her picture while eating. Not to worry though, a lot of sporting breeds have them. You just have to watch it to make sure it doesn't get any worse. |

| Your baby looks fine weight to me. Your Vet probably took care of too many Labs in his practice that day. |

| On the picture where she's eating in the white dishes you can see the rib poke out at the bottom of her liver spot. Sometimes in sporting breeds, especially Weims & GSPs they tend to have that. It means that rib was not properly attached at birth so it moves in weird positions. I learned about it from a well know hunter out of IN. A lot of people have never even seen it or don't know what it is. For the most part it's not too much to worry about, but has been know to cause the dog some discomfort, especially if they lay on that side. I have heard of rare cases where the dog might need surgery to correct it if it starts breaking the skin, but that's rare. You might find more info on it with much more detail on-line somewhere. Not trying to scare you. I just noticed it in that pic & thought I should mention it. She is lovely though. What a kissable face! |

| I am not sure if that is a floating rib or not, and I am not a vet but I know when our guys are inhaling water or food they get that rib poking thing going in that back rib too and they are all attatched just fine! It could appear to be a floater in the picture but I wouldn't panic about it... |

She looks fine to me but 7 cups of food a day is an awful lot even for a full grown GSP, much less a pup. The food you're using is only 28% protein/ 13% fat. If you went with the Pro Plan regular Chicken/Rice puppy formula at 28%/18%, you might find she's eating less, pooping less, and holding weight much easier. If you're willing to switch brands there's lots of other choices of course. I'm using Eagle and I've never been so happy with a food, but there's lots of other good brands out there. |

| I would up her to performance (30 protien/20 fat). 7 cups is a lot, even for a growing pup. Most pups that age, about 4 cups of performance should be fine. |

I was also thinking the same thing. 7 cups is an awful lot of food (and I bet a lot of poop too). I just switched from Pro Plan to cut out the corn (and tons of extra return investment) for my 16 week old boy, and am now back to Canidae. I'd love to feed Eagle Pack, and did have a note from them today that they could drop ship it directly to me (closest place to buy is 70 miles away) so I may do that. My puppy is at 27 pounds and eats 4 cups per day (2 + 2), but of course, he's a boy and they do tend to eat more. I would not worry about the floating rib thing at all. Don't think I've ever had a GSP that didn't have some sign of one (and that's over 19+ years. Phyllis and furtribe www.singltrakshorthairs.com |

7 cups is a lot, my 4 year old male only eats about 3 cups a day...the vet tells us he's tooo skinny also, but no matter how much he eats he stays at about 68lbs, and has only hit 70 lbs once...in the summer he is about 66-67 b/c I'm home with him and all he does is run and swim and run and swim and did I mention run and swim all the time!!!
OK I loaded these so if you click them you can see them full size...and really get a good look at him ;-) These were takedn last summer so he was about 3.5 years.
He's not a hunter, but has been dock jumping for about 6 months and lovs it...he goes running with us on about 20 acres (not a lot to you guys but here on Long Island that's a lot!!) everyday for about at least hour, when he was a puppy it was more like 3 or 4.
He looks really skinny here...and thinking "will you throw the frisbee already"

But in action he's just "ripped"...

I'll look for some puppy pictures, but I think the digital versions were on the computer that crashed when we moved the summer of '06. |

| Ok sorry guys I was running off 3 hrs of sleep when I wrote that. So I went and checked the messuring cup and well it is only 1 cup a scoop so she is getting 4 cups a day. Looks bigger then what it is, So ya she is only getting 4 cups. Oh and her ribs only do that when she is eating or drinking like in that picture. It doesnt seem to bother her at all so just might be nothing |

Our puppy (almost a year old now) looks exactly like your girl. He's always run on the skinny side--and I get my fair share of accusatory glances from chubby Lab owners. While I don't want an overweight dog, I wouldn't mind if he carried a teensy bit more weight--especially on those days that dip into the -20s! He was on Pro Plan Large Breed Puppy (chicken) and I switched him to Pro Plan Performance before he went to our trainers early this fall. He's always done just okay on that feed, so I'd like to try Eagle when he gets back from his winter training trip. Not to knock Pro Plan--I know it works well for a lot of dogs, just not mine.
She's absolutely adorable by the way! What a doll. |

I think your pup is adorable and doesn't look too skinny to me. Looks happy and healthy. They go through clumsy, skinny stages in puppyhood.
My pup who really was too skinny had to have enforced nap times for several months. That helped keep him from burning up the calories as fast as I could pour them in him! |

My vet said the same thing to me. And then I got a new vet. Not saying you have to, but they didn't know what a sporting breed was. She looks just fine to me. My guy was eating 6-8 cups a day at about 6-10 months and he was still on the skinny side. He was rather big though. Now hes settle on about 4 cups a day... But a quart of Innova puppy wasn't to hard for my guy to swollow on a normal basis. |

| First of all, welcome back. Your Isabel looks fine. Beautiful gsp. I looked at my vet reports from out pups and one was 25 and the male was 30. Yours is fine. They go through growind spurts and may look a little gangly at times just like teenagers. Looks like skin and bones and then poof they are filled in. I imagine she will do the same. I use Diamond High Energy. Lots of protein and I supplement with meat and peanut butter. We use around 4 cups a piece here too. |
