so my brother just bought a hosue with 5 acres that has been vacant so there is lots of tall weeds....he did get some paths mowed but there was still lots of cover....so I took the dogs and the pigeon over...

I tied a leg of the pigeon again and then tied it to a post....I would then plant the pigeon in the tall weeds....

This time I didn't have the dog on a check cord, but some might notice my e-collars came...FYI I DIDN'T USE THE ECOLLAR WHILE WORKING THE BIRDS the dogs don't know what I want yet....however the property isn't really fenced in yet just areas so my dogs have had e-collars on before so they were just on in case of recall (I only had to use when calling away from the goat that was tied-out)...

Any way basically the dog was put up front and I then hid the bird and went and got the dog and told him to find it....Blitz just ran around like a crazy man and ended up stumbling across the bird and then got very excited about it....didn't even point just wagged it tail super fast....Blitz just got 2 tries...

Striker did much better he actually put his nose down and looked like he was searching for the bird....he would point it, then I would tel him to leave it and go....he would then break point and get closer to the bird and I would then have to let him again to leave it and go....then I would step in and get the bird, move Striker out of site and he would sit and wait till the bird was hid again somewhere else....I think I gave Striker 3 tries....

No treats and no whoas....just baby steps and I hope this ground cover was better than just my backyard....

PS

Blitz's pics weren't that good cuz I bumped my camera setting by mistake...

I would not do this. Once the he points, go and pick up the bird. You are teaching him he CAN get closer and what you want to teach him is he CAN'T get closer.

Otherwise -great pictures and the dogs are on their way to becoming quality hunters. I like your brothers land, great places for searching. A hunting dog is nothing if it doesn't know how to use its nose, the wind and the terrain.

see I guess I got a little confused from my last time with the pigeons....last time I made the dogs whoa/stay so I could get in front and get the bird but I was told not to whoa and to send them off on another search (I didn't have another bird so I just said leave it and go)...which my plan was to tell him to leave it and then get the bird....If I told him to stay he would and I could get the bird cuz that is what I did last time....which in the one picture I got from in front of Striker I did tell him whoa/stay (I kinda use both words sometimes together sometimes only one and they know what it means -- freeze) so I could get in front of him to get a picture...

Yeah I thought this land was much better hunting land....it will be that way till the cows, goats and horses eat it down, lol! So I am taking advantage of using it while I can....

Blitz is still not using his nose which is a bit disappointing, but at least Striker is!

Just something to bear in mind, when Hogan puts his head down I know he is foot scenting (usually after rabbits) and I have to get after him to get his head up, so he can pick scent up on the wind.

I could see that since pigeons/birds would most likely fly to where they would be going and not walking there, lol! However it was kind of a bad day, no wind at all and super hot....at home in the backyard Striker had his nose touching the ground, here at my brother's it was not that low....

Dogs will scent/search the most efficient way for them, this depends on the conditions (weather/terrain) and quality of the nose. I find the most effecient scenters use their nose in 3 postions - ground, level and high(air scent). The GSP is a vdog, designed for more than search and point.

In the video I posted you will see the 3 positions.

Great pictures, its fun to get them out and see what they can do.

I would try to work on the whoa before you are letting them off a check cord.

We took Remi out yesterday and we had the same issue of the heat and no wind. I think Remi was getting confused with old scent on the ground and the new scent of the birds flying in.

Splat - With more experience on birds they will figure it out. They are still new to this game and just need lots of exposure. Weather and terrain effect scenting abilities, but once they figure it out and with a good nose the impact is not as significant. I have run my dogs in 90 degree with both no wind and extremely high wind, and they were still able to find the birds. And as pixie said, the dogs will shift based on what they need to do to find the birds. Just get them on more birds and they will figure it out. Heck, they are doing darn good for just being on two birds so far.
