So Juno is going through a bit of an attitude thing and I am wondering if it is perhaps just his age or if anyone has any advice or stories.

He is just a little over two years old and has been an almost perfect pup up until now, with only the minor issues.  So we don't know what is going on with him now. For the about ten days now he has been barking very loudly and whining after we have put him to bed. He has slept in his crate at night since we got him with no problems. After he goes outside for the last time before bed he normally just crawls right into the crate and goes to sleep with no problems.  So lately it has just been a fight to get him in there. Last night I had to grab him by the scruff and force him in. And then he barks and barks. It is just so not like him.....what is going on?

Oh and also last week he peed in the doggy babysitter's house - in three different places. Just marking. He has been there many, many times before, with many of the other dogs that are there and usually just loves it there and has NEVER done anything like this before.

So with all of these things that just aren't normally characteristic of him we are wondering if it is just some sort of authority phase he is going through or if this is something more serious that we shoulod be worried about.

Nothing major has changed around here. The weather has been very cold so he hasn't been going outside or running around as much as normal, at his own choice as he doesn't seem to want to go out. Also we had started e-collar training a couple of weeks ago and so we are maybe wondering if this may be what is causing the change in his attitude.

Any advice or comments from the GSP crowd would be great.

Juno,

I think it may all be connected to the current lack of exercise due to the extreme cold weather. We haven't had quite the same lo temps as you but I still make the girls go for a run for at least 30 minutes. We all get bundled up!

aahhhh the terrible 2's.

Yup a lot of it is age. If you think about it in dog years, Juno is 14 years old. Not sure if you have had kids but this is a very trying time

All of my dogs have gone through this, and fortunately it does not last very long.

Your dog will test your will. Just make sure that he does not loose track of who is boss.

Have fun....

This is so funny because Belle turned two last week and ever since then I wake up each morning thinking she is just full of herself. She has been too funny lately and seems to have this attitude. I told my mom it is just like having a two year old kid!

Could another dog been in her crate? My brother's golden was going through something like yours. Turns out his brother-in-laws dog pee'd in her crate. They had to really clean it well before she'd go back in willingly.

Are you sure he was just marking? It might be a bladder thing...

Sounds to me like hes being a teenager and hes testing the waters, trust me i know a lot about that =]

And the terrible 2s + Lack of excercise due to weather issues isnt helping your issue.

Rocky can act just like that and he is 6 years old. Today it was ice and snow so I decided not to run him. Just let him out to do his business then back in. Soon Rocky started dragging my boots outof the closet, then he dragged the throw covers off the couch, then he started dragging all his tennis balls and stuffed animals all over the house. That is when I said OK Rocky lets go out and have Zoomy Zoomy time and we did and he had the best time finding an old stick and played with that zooming all over the place for 45 minutes then he came in and settled down. So I think it is a GSP thing no matter what age. Rocky will also mark his territory and pee in another house if another dog has urinated in the house. So multiple dogs in a day care house could happen easily as it is in a male dogs nature to cover another dogs urine.

Marie,

Where in Wisconsin are you located, if you don't mind my asking?

We live in the big town of Berlin WI.5000 populaion About 10 miles from Ripon closest dog park. Eight miles from Green Lake home of the American Baptist Assembly, and about 20 miles from Oshkosh. The nicest thing about living in Berlin WI with a GSP, we have 2 if not more spectacular pheasant Game hunting farms right in Berlin so we can practice pheasant hunting from Sept to March if we want without driving far.. And we have nice farm field where we have permission to run our dogs as long as they do not chase the herd of white tail deer who live here and the horses. Thank you for asking Barb!!!

Well sounds like this two year old bratty/authority thing is going around.

Ah, all of that GSP attitude don't we just love it. Juno's been really tired out the last couple of days so this has helped his behaviour. Also we haven't been letting him up into the bed just to put him in his place a bit. We are thinking that maybe he was starting to think that he should be a little futher up in the pack...so time to remind him who is the boss around here.....oh but he is just so cute.

But yes he has been acting just like a kid who is kicking an screaming because they won't go to bed. Let's hope that this phase doesn't last too long.....

Thanks for all the advice and stories. Best thing is to just know that we aren't alone. Let's hope we make it through and we can all still the boss of our bratty but cute GSP's.

His brother has been acting the same way for the last 2 weeks. Being really loud no marking though. I have been excersizing the hell out of him for the upcoming trials and still no avail. Just sounds like he is challenging you guys. Diego has been challenging everyone in the house so its been a handful.

Thanks Ryan, looks like the brothers are both going through a little something right now.

Right now Juno is litterally running and playing all day so he is so tired but by the time it is time to go to bed it is just a fight to get him to go to bed....oh well I am wearing him down. And the barking is really something that has just started. He has always been so quiet and really never barked up until now....so lets hope that doesn't stick, especially the 11 pm barking. Oh well a few more rules, limits and tough love for now and lots of exercise hopefully we will all make it through no worse for wear.

Good luck with Deigo. Both with the attitude and the trials.

Good to see you are back and around. Hopefully we will be in the same part of the province one of these days and we will be able to say HI.
