What do you mean by is the area hot?

I asked about a different "x-ray" method and they said there were no othere option available around here. I am leaning toward the surgery because if they do an MRI to confirm a foreign object then I will still have to do the surgery.

I have not been to any of the areas on the map where she could have contracted Valley fever. I will mention it to the vet. We have an appointment with an Orthopedic specialist on Friday.

Sorry for not being clear.

Is the swollen area emitting heat?

Thought that might be what you meant. If I put the area against my lips it feels slightly warmer than the rest of the foot. Not real hot and it is hard to tell. Everything on these dogs feels warm.

Consulatation on Friday with Orthopedic Vet resulted in our decision to do surgery. She is pretty sure something has worked it's way into Meeka's paw even though we cannot find an entry and there is no drainage site. Thursday is the day. I hope they find something as Meeka needs some relief from the discomfort and we need to get on with summer and all of it's activities.

I too hope they find something so Meeka can get on to healing. Good luck and let us know what happens.

Positive thoughts for Meeka and you that they are able to solve this problem. It definitely sounds as if there is something there. After this length of time the outside may have healed over, but the object/whatever still remains. Will be waiting to hear.

Meeka had surgery on 7/14/11. After opening her up they could find no foreign object, flushed area well though just in case. Upon opening the tendon sheath found that one of the two tendons was completely "red, raw and irritated". Surgeon took cultures of everything, won't get results back till this week sometime. She is thinking now that something may have punctured her foot, irritated the tendon and then was pulled out and healed over. Hoping for complete healing now that it has been opened, her system should send enough cells to fight and heal the damage. Two weeks of complete rest and then stitch removal.

Meeka is being very good about lying still and not licking or pulling at her bandage.

Aww, poor baby. I just couldn't believe that there wasn't something in there or in and out with infection. Many positive thoughts for full healing
and no further problems.

Received a call from the vet/surgeon. Histology reports back and they found an uncommon bacteria, bacillus cereus thuringiensis, say that 5 time fast. Treating with 500mg ciproflaxacin twice a day for several weeks.

Stitches out next week. Meeka is doing pretty well although I can tell she is quite bored, even being the couch potatoe that she is she lovers her swimming and chuck it ball. Can't wait.

Just a thought. Since she is going to be on the antibiotics for several weeks, maybe some probiotics to help her gut. :-)
