HA! My dogs cheat also, but I don't enforce not cheating. No reason to with versatiles,IMO.
In order to fix it you will have to have a few things 100% - sit, recall and directional commands.
I hope you are driving across to the other side to place bumpers! LOl

Normally I do not enforce non-cheating but with Nitros age considered I am trying to encourage a water back. He is trained directionally but think got a tad confused at this distance. I want the water back as at the tests a lot of people stand around the ponds to watch, some with dogs & Nitro loves to say hi. With a 9 yr old handling him, I want to avoid as many "complications" as possible......
And HECK YES, I drive around this to place bumpers!!!!!!!!!!

Our last session & Nitro did AWESOME. We added some difficulty to his retrieves and fixed the cheating. As he starts out he drifts left some so is given a second command "back", once almost across he comes to a small tree/log & grabs at it (it is in his line to the bumper & we do play fetch with sticks) so I command "back" once again to get him to shore & the mark. This is almost a 200 yd retrieve!

AAAAHHHHHH!
I don't play with sticks b/c of the HUGE fear my dogs will bring back a stick - just to bring back SOMETHING.
Can you IMAGINE the humiliation I would feel if that happened at a DKV test??
Oh, my.

How did you fix the cheating?

Sounds like it's time to transition to more complex retrieves.
Take away the visual.

A simple drill I do:

Dogs do not see preparation. I take 9 bumpers(or birds) and place them 200' or so left, right, back from where I will send.
I position dog facing me. I stand back about 25' or so. I send in varying order. On the last set I will send on back, stop the dog then send left or right. The last 2 retrieves are back to easy retrieves.

It is important that the dog know that when we handle we are sending them some place good.

Thank you Everbell!
Francine, I do blinds minus the visual, Nitro is not ready yet though for longs, in a week or 2, he is doing shorter blinds now (60-80yd with no visual). They never see anything I set up and I already do directional casting...
I start the long blinds by using a ladder of bumpers, this keeps the dog working forward in a straight cast consistantly moving forward, I will start Nitro on this soon.
He could have never brought back the "stick" he grabbed at, was a small tree, LOL. At his age I am not to worried about him bringing a stick instead & have yet to have any of mine do it & I do play fetch with sticks, they seem to know the difference.
