Sorry no update yesterday... Wolfgang is coming home today! My wife is picking him up as I type this. Going to be on pretty high dose of pred for about 3 weeks, after that will taper to a maintenance dose that he will have to take the rest of his life. The vet seems to think that he will do very well and it won't adversely effect his quality or quantity of life!!! I will keep everyone posted on how he is doing... Thanks again for all of the support! |

Did Dr Jackson have a name for the condition? I ask as I have a foster GSP which was diagnosed last fall with cutaneous reactive histiocitosis.

Deb -- Dr. Jackson couldn't be specific at this point, however, indicated that the treatment would be basically the same for most any of the immune mediated diseases. We see her for a follow up in 3 weeks and, perhaps, we will have a better idea at that point. BTW -- I think Dr. Jackson is great! |

I'm so glad to hear your dog is coming home. I've been through this. Our dog Oliver (RIP May 2010) had Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia (ITP), which is an extreme drop in blood platelets leading to severe bleeding. We got through it and he was back to his crazy self after he recovered. The predisone was a bit of a challenge as his appetite was out of control, but I'll take that any day over the disease. If you ever want to chat, please feel free to message me. Emily |

Wolfgang seems to keep improving -- he played for about 30 minutes last night (in the house -- it was 94 degrees with high humidity yesterday) very alert and no fever. He lost about 4 lbs while in the hospital, so he's been a little run down. The prednisone is helping with his appetite... I know I've said it before, but I want to make clear that I REALLY APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR HELP, UNDERSTANDING, SUPPORT, ETC!!!!!!!!!!! @Jackie -- I live about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. |

One thing we learned was that activity level dictated the prednisone dose. A friend offered to watch Sam while we were on vacation and 3 days later we got a call that our dog was dying. Seems she and the friends dog had been chasing each other a lot and she literally crashed. Told the friend to give her an extra prednisone and give her water with the turkey baster we had left. Got a call 2 hours later that she was fine. Spaying her resolved the problem and she no longer needed the prednisone. Maybe your vet might look for some sort of underlying inflamation that triggers the immune reaction. Wishing a long life for Wolfgang. |

My heart just stopped several times reading this thread but I am glad to hear that things may just turn out well after all. Let's hope it will eventually resolve or it can be treated over his long life. Re prednisone, all vets I have ever dealt with really prescribe it reluctantly but it was a life-saver for my bulldog with severe allergies. They all hum-and-hawed each time refill came around, but always gave us some. She was on 5 mg ever other day, and more during flare-ups. They said she won't live too long, prednisone is not good for her, etc. She lived 14 years and died of old age. And prednisone is cheap! Kepp us posted on his recovery... |
