UPDATE: Ultrasound revealed enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes -- still no firm diagnosis, but is one of 3 things -- infection, autoimmune disease or cancer. They did a needle aspiration and sent it to pathology -- there's a good chance that they will be able to get a definitive diagnosis from there, if not, they'll have to do a biopsy. Could be a few more days until we know. I feel like I'm losing my best friend.

We're still thinking of you.
Hang in there,don't lose hope.
He knows you love him.
So glad they are narrowing it down.
I will have to check the forum over the weekend to get your updates.
Please keep us informed.

Regardless of blood tests I would still put that dog on Doci....Will not hurt, and I do not trust some of the tick tests...I saw a dog with Ehrliciosis, and I had it too last summer...Nothing to mess with.

I agree with Brenda. I was just at the vet with my girl, Halo, for her yearly and I had just found a tick on her foot. I wasn't sure where it came from and since we had been in Wisc at the NSS and there were ticks there (and I have never had any at my house), I talked to my vet about it. We decided to put her on Doxi even though she has not had any symptoms because it is a mild antibiotic with very little risk, and if there is even a chance the tick was carrying something it would nip it in the bud before it even got started.

Another update: From the moment he hit the emergency clinic, they put him on doxycycline and added ampicillin the next day. We visited with Wolfgang for a little over 2 hours yesterday and he is wiped out. He has lost about 1.5 lbs., but we now have a treatment plan and a vet that I would trust with my own life (going to post her link below in case anyone in Western PA needs it). She is very confident that this is a result of an autoimmune disease - the pathology came back non-reactive and she doesn't want to open him up for a slight chance that a biopsy would find something different. So, last night we started prednisone. If it isn't an autoimmune process at work, we'll know within a day -- he'll get really sick. If we open him up for a biopsy, we'd have to wait about 2 weeks for him to heal to start the pred if it isn't cancer. I really think we've got it nailed here -- the next few weeks will be a little tough, but there is a really good chance that there will be a really good outcome and it won't severely affect his quality of life.

Thanks again for all your input, thoughts and prayers!!!! You people are great! I'll keep you posted.

We had a GSP with an autoimmune problem. It came on when she was about 12 weeks old. Prednizone kept it in check when it flared and once we could get her healthy enough to spay her it took care of the problem. Symptoms were high fever and she would totally crash. She did live to the age of 13 but the neurological problems were coming back at that point.

I know that our vet had another GSP with auto immune problems after he treated ours so apparently it may be a GSP problem in some lines. Usually it was triggered by something in our pup---it turned out to be her uterus was infected.
