Now that i have gone through having our first litter of pups I am wondering if anyone has pictures of their whelping area along with the area they then keep the pups as they grow. We managed but it wasn't exactly how I would want it for future litters. I would also love to visit some breeders to see how they have things set up but that may not happen for a while yet. Thanks in advance!

Hey Beth, I'll try to send you some pics of Blaze's whelping area as soon as I dig them up. Call me sometime if you get a chance & I can also explain some things I did to make my life soooo much easier as far as the growth of the puppies once they started getting out of the box. I will say once they started wondering around I switched to a 48" wire crate left open with blankets inside that had an x-pen attached to it for a play area. I laid a tarp down & covered the x-pen area with white wood chips (clean & fresh) which is where they all went potty. It was so nice & VERY easy to keep clean. All I had to do was scoop up the potty when they went & they NEVER got any on their little chubby bodies while they played. It also made it so when the puppies went to their new homes they were already potty trained except an accident here or there from being in a new home. It sure was a lot better then the 1st time I whelped a litter & used paper. What a nasty mess that always was & when they went if I didn't catch it right away it was all over the babies. (EWW!) The wood also cuts down on any nasty smell.

I don't have photos of our set up but will take some when Terra has litter this summer. We let our puppies have the entire dining room. It opens to our front entrance and the kitchen. The hardwood is covered with linoleum and baby gates are put across the doorways. Initially the whelping box is in the room, wood 6'x6'x2' with an opening for mom and a pig rail around the inner perimeter. Once the puppies are out of the box, they have the run of the room. I have a dog bed in 1 corner, a plastic crate in a 2nd and newspaper in a 3rd. They quickly learn to go to the paper for their business. Outside, we have a fenced run for them so they can't get into too much mischief. Our puppies get lots of socialisation being in the heart of our home where all the action is. They are allowed into the rest of the house individually or in small groups to interact with the older dogs and explore. They are exposed to birds, water and the clicker before going to their new homes.

I really like the trap idea! I will have to impliment that one. I think this would have been easier if the timing would have been better. Being a new mom and having a litter of pups all in the same time is a bit much. :-) It has gone well and they are very much fun! The new two leg baby is doing well. Has adjusted well also!

My husband designed and built my whelping box out of laminated boards. It is a bit heavy, but vey sturdy! the pig rail is out of PVC. I use fleece whelping pads, then 1/2 pad 1/2 white paper (purchased at ups store). The whelping box is in my bedroom so they are never out of my sight. As they grow, they are moved to a pen in my family room. i use 2 ex pens bundgied together. My husband again designed a base for this out of shower stall material It has sides that are about 4 inches high. I still put plastic under it. I use pine chips and this keeps them in. I fouind a doghouse on sale for $25.00 so i made the bottom of this their bed with aa blanket in it. It was sturdy so they couldnt chew it. The pen is directly across from my patio door so it makes potty training easy. My family room is also my play room so they pups are always the center of attention. Oh, in my bedroom, the whelping box is below a window so anyone who wants to see the puppies can It works out perfect as it is high enough there are no drafts! Misty was a bit selective this time as to who could come into her room!

The only thing I would do different is I put white carpet in my family room when I first moved in. Not my best move! Oh, the puppies get to play in the living room and we use another ex pen and a baby gate to block off the entrances.

I have a poop bucket and scoops i keep right next to my pen too. I love my system, it is very easy for me! The only thinkg i really need help with is setting up the box. I have to say, it is much easier when the kids get older and do some of the work! this past litter was more attatched to my son! He so owns my pick boy as his reward.

I agrree with you about the helpers! My boys are now 15 and 18 years. With our last litter, 2 years ago, they were super, cleaning up after up the puppies, helping with the water exposure and bird handling. They also took lots of photos for me.

I bought a metal base for a rabbit hutch. It is 36 x 36. I bought tongue & groove wallboards. I used l brackets to connect them around the pan. The pan has 4 inch sides. I added a new set as they got older. I used a clip on lamp to keep them warm. Then I had baby blankets I used in the bottom. Worked great until they got a bit big as 10 pups! Crazy!
