So proud of my boy!! Today was his second hunt class and our trainer was so impressed with his whoa command that we decided to let him out on some birds "off leash". He kept a long check cord attached to his collar and let him go after a few quail he had set free earlier.
Remi pointed out at least 4 hens, caught & retrieved them to us. He also pointed and kicked up a few roosters. I am beyond excited and I was literally jumping up and down when I saw him work.
Best of all, I did remember my camera this time!! Pictures are uploading now...will share a few when they're finished.  |

Really nice action shots.
Is Remi sight pointing-if yes, hide the birds better. not sure - when you said Remi caught and retrieved some - this is not good,usually.
If Remi is flushing out birds and they are flying off this is OK - the idea is that at some point he will not get so close and will not cause a flush.
The check cord is supposed to stop the dog from getting too close or flushing - if you can't get on the cc early enough to prevent it then it's too early to have let it go - keep a hold of it.
Ideally, you want to work toward him pointing and you kicking around looking for a bird - you don't have to flush it,tho,sometimes I just pick it up and we move on.
When a dog is pointing -they are not whoaing - there is a difference.
Don't move too fast. Make sure whoa is as near 100% as possible - will he stop when he's hauling 100' away from you?
It's my pet peeve - a dog should learn to search, use nose and wind effectively and search like a demon before they are steadied.

Our trainer wanted to let him loose on birds to get him amped up since this is only his second time out. The first time he was interested in them, but wasn't quite sure what to do. I realize that he is not supposed to be chasing them. He let out some hens which I believe are easier to catch as they don't fly as well. We were not using any guns, just letting him find the birds and get them himself. He did see a few roosters fly off and he left them alone. The hens didn't even try to fly they just stayed on the ground and he caught them and brought them back to us. We let him do that about 4 times then started working on getting him to stop and point by holding the check cord on some birds that were hiding in the brush.
We brought home a quail that he did kill and put it in the freezer to use for fetch and getting him to return right back to us. He was retrieving them fine and coming towards us but wasn't too sure about dropping them, and our trainer said we need to be careful with how we "take" the bird from them so they don't feel as though they get the bird taken from them on each retrieve, but that this is fun and we appreciate the retrieve from them.
Don said for now we are building his confidence with the birds and testing to see how bad he really wants them....now that we have an idea of if, we can go from there and work on whats next. |

| That is very cool - very good pics! Now that Spring is here, we are going to take Windsor out in the woods next weekend. There is this area of town with big huge towers that go on forever and alot of people hike in there. We have a 30 foot cord that we've used before in a bunch of snow out in a soccer field - no trees there. So how does Remi not get tangled up in the woods? Windsor was on a long cord today outside while we were doing yard work - he's pretty good but got hung up a few times. |

| It was a pretty thick rope....with a knot tied at the end and he did get hunt up a few times but its easy to get him untangled since the rope is heavier. Obviously it would be much more difficult if we were attached to the other end, but we just let him go with the rope behind him. I was worried about him running too far but he stayed within close range. (We're still working on recall and I'm still getting used to having a big ranging dog) |

| I tend to agree with Francine on this topic. But hey everyone has their own methods of training. As far as any check cords I have used I never knott or tie any loops. I leave it straight and like to use a real flexible piece of rope such as nylon. The length I would determine by how fast the little "stinker" could run ! I love these type threads ! Good luck & beautiful pic's ! These shorthairs are the coolest ! I love the training episodes . |
