I haven't heard that, but I have heard that tennis balls are bad for dogs if they chew the outside off and get to the inside that comes a part. I typically save tennis balls for quick games of fetch and then pick them up. Same with bumpers. I don't leave them out for playing unsupervised either.

I stick to non-squeaky toys if at all possible. He usually just guts them anyways. He has lots of tennis balls and rope toys and bones. He will destroy a tennis ball given the chance, so I have to change them out frequently and I have to buy actual tennis balls not cheaper knock offs.

Haven't heard about the tooth enamel part, but I don't give Lucy tennis balls because all she wants to do is chew all the coating off of them. Believe me, she really works at it.

Anyone ever heard that tennis balls are bad for dogs tooth enamel? That's the only reason we don't let Bo play with tennis balls anymore cuz he would chew them for hours <img src=" align="absMiddle" src="/DesktopModules/NTForums/themes/blue/emoticons/biggrin.gif" />

Yes, the regular tennis balls that are actually made for tennis are bad for their teeth. But the tennis balls that Kong makes & other toy companies made for dogs are usually a softer bristle and not so abrasive. Which is why we don't use regular tennis balls.

Another problem with tennis balls is that they collect dirt and grit, which makes them more abrasive when the dog chews on it.  Poor Jasper's got quite worn that way.  Unfortunately I never found a "dog designed" tennis ball that lasted more than 5 minutes.

I have one long "snake" with multiple squeakers which for some reason nobody has disemboweled yet.  The bad part is, we were all playing last night and with two dogs tugging and stomping on it the squeakers drove me nuts!

We picked up two new toys at Petsmart called DOG BAL.  They balls that are about 8 inches in diameter made out of kong like material.  They have lasted for about three weeks with little damage. This is HUGE. The only problem is that they do have a bit of heft and the dogs love dropping them on the floor till you pick it up an play with them. At times it sounds like a drum corps is marching through my home.

For his birthday Gunner got 2 new toys... one is made out of fire hose material, pretty cool. Really quiet squeakers in it. And the 2nd is a stuffingless toy that has a waterbottle inside. Very noisy. He LOVES the fire hose one.

We shall see what happens, I guess. Usually if he really likes a toy it takes awhile for him to destroy it.

i have bought the stuffing free toys that hold a water bottle...dogs love them...however Striker destroys is...I have never had a dog so destructive of toys...actually the GSP's are the only ones to have ever really played with toys...my boxer would play tug-of-war with me with a rope toy but never by herself...and my parents blue healer plays frisbee and fetch....but Blitz and Striker will just play with toys together or on their own....Striker tries to shed everything so no toys with any kind of material...I even tried a kong toy that was fleece he never got it apart but the thread was starting to fray after 2 weeks so I took it away....I used to be able to give them braided fleece toys but Striker pulls them apart or can bite off tiny pieces like 1/2 a dime size I saw some in his poop during yard pick up so those toys got taken away too...

These are also the first dogs I have had that will chew on a nylabone...so I have antlers, nyla bones, petstages orka ball, and jolly pets ball minus the rope.

jolly pets ball: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3207065&lmdn=Dog

nyla bones: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3206939&lmdn=Dog

antlers: www.antlerchews.com

we had but ended up taking away
JW rubber frog lasted a long time but then Striker was biting little by little away at his feet http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=11148108&lmdn=Dog

same with the JW Cuz toy lasted a long time but slowly the feet were missing bits http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3207032&lmdn=Dog

We do use dog chuck it balls for fetch but they get put away when not being used...
