Morning all,

I was speaking to a prospective new breeder of a little girl I'm looking to get in May the other day and we were talking about the different breed lines of the dogs etc. Bentley has some Birkanwald in his line and hers are more Isara Kurzhar breeding.

She was saying that Birkanwald bred dogs are usually a little larger than the other pedigree's and Bentley may be a big dog. So I measured him out of curiousity because I don't want him to be HUGE compared to her (I know he'll be bigger being a dog and her a bitch).

Just wondering how big your dogs are? Bentley is 25 and 1/4".

He's approx. 25" at 11 1/2 months. He was wiggling so its not the best measurement. He may be a little taller.

My male GSP is 25.5 inches tall. He is 3 years old and weighs about 65 lbs. Just to give you an idea. Our 1 year old male GSP is I would ges about 24.5 as he is just slightly shorter than the 3 year old and he weighs 51 lbs. My female black GSP is 23.5 inches and also about 50 lbs and my 7 month old male GSP is 23 inches and probably about 40 lbs.

Max appears to be 25 inches tall and 65 lbs. He is a neutered male. My first shorthair was much shorter then Max and never weighed more then 56 lbs . He was an intact male. I remember when I first saw Max's mom thinking...... Wow she is one of those long legged models.

Ozzy's about 24 inches and 55 lbs and gets called small all the time even though he's right smack dab in the middle of the breed standard. My older male Oskar is probably 26-27 inches, super long legs, and about 70 pounds. I neutered him real young, didn't know better then, and I attribute a lot of his height and lankiness to the young neutering and will never do it that young again.

Strange how the breed standard for dogs is 23"-25" yet a LOT of our dogs are over that?

If the dog is FCI registered then 26" is in the standard. 62-66cm (24.5" - 26") for males.
That's pretty large and anything over that would be too large - IMO.
In America the GSP is used mainly as an upland dog, so I don't know why breeders would be breeding on the top of the standard - unless they are using the breed for waterfowl and a more versatile use.Actually, any breeder in any country should breed the way the dog will be used - otherwise they can create a hinderence for the dog.
JMO.

I've seen quite a few dogs thrown by Rolf Birkenwald and Wassir Birkenwald and they run the gamut...some medium some fairly large. Remember that you have 2 cm either way before it becomes a fault so a dog can actually be 68 cm and still be V rated.

The standard in the USA also states a half in over or under standard is ok (for showing at least).

We do breed for a versatile dog (at least this is our goal). All our dogs love the water and with my 1 year old male he loves doing duck retreives. The 3 year old I just got last August so we are building his confidence in swimming but has become a water NUT as well. My female loves duck retreives and the pup is becoming a water MANIAC.

IMO the overall dog is more importan than hight. As a tall/short or average dog can be totaly unballanced and hight won't matter at that point. They have to be able to function first and foremost as a versatile hunting dog.

A problem comes into play if the build becomes cumbersome. Balance can be there, weight can be there - if the dog is slow and heavy boned this is not desired - at least not for me.

Structure and balance are more important than height in my opinion. The weight should be appropriate to the structure. Too heavily boned and too heavy a GSP won't be able to perform in the field. My boy is tall (25.5 inches) and 70 lbs, but he is lean and runs fine in the field. Now as a comparison, Halo is about 23 inches and weighs 50 lbs and she is faster than my boy and can turn much easier, but in an open field they both do fine. Halo would beat Ringo everytime though in agility. Fauna, Halo's daughter, is a little squirt. She is 21 inches and 45 lbs and she is as fast as her mother and promises to be just as agile.

Just so you know in my pack the girls rule and even though Ringo could best any of them, he follows their rules to the letter. Poor boy doesn't have a prayer. LOL

Also, in the show ring in the US I have noticed that they are putting up bigger dogs and bitches. That said, there are some judges that have distinct preferences for either small or bigger and you learn who they are as you show. Because size is not a fault in the US the judges cannot weight of measure a dog in the ring. The field trial dogs tend to be smaller than the show dogs, but this is not an absolute.

I need to get a more official measurement of Remi at lunch time but he is just as tall as Nallah now, which is 24".

He weighed 40# when we had him weighed a month ago. He will be 9 months on Sunday. He's long & lanky. But I expect him to fill out a bit more. Both of his parents were small. Under 60# and not tall by any means.
