I don't have a routine, but I do try to make sure he gets plenty of exercise.

If the weather is good. My lab and asher have a 30 x 100 foot dog run during the day. He runs constantly back there.

When I get home, I take them for a walk down the street. Off leash since there are no houses on my end of the neighborhood.

Once a week - I try to wear him slap out. Mountain bike ride or up to the state park for a hike. Last week, we did an 8 mile mountain bike ride and I was worn out. He came home, ran and got his ball and brought it to me to throw.

The kicker. Usually once a week, my sister brings her basset hound over and they play in the backyard all day. That is seriously about the only time he truly gets worn out. He sleeps like a baby for a day after that.

About every other day we either bike-jor, run out of the van (at an old horse racetrack) for 6-8 miles per dog, then a short free field run & a bird - this was once the snow cleared enough of course. In between we do retrieving drills & in the summer, water work on hot days.

As I sit here at my computer I have come to realize at the end of this long winter I better cut down on my intake and exercise myself ! Thank Goodness I have Max to keep pushing me !

This is Levi's exercise.....He chases the poor cat around the house from the time he gets up in the morning until he passes out

Harleigh's not a GSP, but she has the energy as one :P  Anyways, we don't really have a "set" routine.  Actually the only thing that is set in stone is our Agility class on Monday's. LOL

During the week I usually try to do walk/jog, some fetching and then mental stimulation.  On the weekends I try to do something more "fun" so swimming, hiking, etc., is what I prefer to do.  But just as long as she gets some sort of exercise she's good. :D

Today we went for a swim in the pool & she's fine with that.  Swimming is her favorite.

We have a routine - and whereas I can see not wanting to ingrain a routine with the dog(s) I also think it can be a very good thing. Bugsy was a pup in need of structure and his still thrives with routine. So.....
We do 3-5 miles a day in the morning, walk, run, bike - Mon-Sat. If I can squeeze a longer hike in we do. From about mid-March through November we do a couple of swims a week, if he does a bunch of swimming I skip a run.
Sunday's he has a friend come over and they play for a couple of hours. That is my day off LOL

We have a cocker pup next door so they have been playing every evening. He has a couple of other buddies and usually hooks up with one of them each week too.

He's more settled now but when he was young you couldn't wear him out physically and that is when I upped mental stimulation for him. I do a bunch of clicker training and he has a wide variety puzzle type toys.
Once I started with some of the mental stimulation work he was more laid back in general.

I also do a variety of training with him; mostly scent driven stuff, be it birds, or some items that they use for human remains dogs or other objects, sometimes I have him find a person who is hiding in the woods. 15 minutes of tough scent work and he is more worn out than by a 5 mile trot.

Also a word of caution with dogs under 15-18 mos I have heard it isn't good to run them regularly. This is because the growth plates aren't closed.
Lastly with dogs like GSP's that are natural high energy athletes by working them physically you create a monster - I see this as a good thing - but it does wind up demanding more of you.

Karen (recognize you from the dog.com forum) (*waves*)

I asked about running Remi at such a young age and was advised that as long as he wasn't running on pavement and constantly pounding his joints everyday, short runs for now would be fine. We run more of a "trail" which is the side of the road as we have no sidewalks. We only go every other day, and on the days he doesn't go for a run he gets some other form of exercise.

As for creating a monster or them dependant on a schedule...I guess it doesn't bother me to have a schedule with them. I'm a detail oreintated person....I do well on a schedule too. My dogs do very well with our schedule....if we happen to miss a day to due to weather or busy schedule...they're fine with it. But, as a whole...I enjoy them pushing me to get outside and we enjoy our time with our dogs doing what they love. My labs push just as hard as Remi to get outside and do "something.....ANYTHING" so I guess I'm used to it!

waves back at Kelley

From what I understand as long as it isn't an everyday thing and as you say on softer surfaces its fine.  Its the constant pace that is the issue, again from what I understand.

ha ha yea I'm OK with the monster I created but I whole-heartedly recommend doing the 'brain' work too.  It tires them in a whole different way!

The past two days I have been using the fourwheeler. I have an access road to a quarry that is on my neighbors property and it makes a big circle. It's back in the woods so it is totaly safe for doing this. The quickest way to get his little heart rate up ! I will usually walk it once with him and then do like three more laps with the fourwheeler. He loves it !

That sounds like fun Chris!

We had the day off yesterday and we spent a good portion of it outside doing some yard work. Remi got to spend the day outside chasing the girls and was EXHAUSTED by the time we came in! Here's a picture of him about 3 minutes after we came inside...

The real kicker is that he hadn't even had dinner yet.....I had to wake him up to eat!!

That's the best kind of day, when they are so tired they snooze as soon as they come inside. Sunday was like that for me & the dogs, we were out in the yard for about 6 hours (they were hunting squirrels & I was raking leaves & burning brush) and then took a hike for a little over an hour. Both dogs passed out cold on the couch by dinnertime... so did I!
