Hi, my name is Layla and I hate my kitty. My former owner told my new mommy that I was OK with kitties, and that might have been true (I'll never tell!) but it was hate at first sight when I got to my new house in July and saw Itchy the cat. I went a little crazy and got in lots of trouble for chasing her, but no matter how much trouble I get into, I don't care, because I hate the kitty. Every day I hate her a little more.

A couple of times she had the NERVE to scratch my pretty little face with her nasty claws when I tried to bite her. That made me so angry I saw red… of course, that could have been the blood. I went to mommy for sympathy, but she told me that if I was too stupid to respect the claw, then I deserved a couple of scars. Doesn’t she know that she is harboring a demon from hell in her basement and that I am just doing my job by trying to get rid of it?!?!

So far, the cat demon had been able to avoid me, but I have come so close sometimes that I could almost taste her… I bet she would taste really good, too. Mommy said she is trying to find a new home for the demon cat and until then she has to stay in the basement. She always warns the kitty when it is time to let me out the dog door in the basement so the kitty has time to run and hide. I have plenty of free time every evening to look for her, though. I jumped up on the woodpile, because I know she sleeps there sometimes, and her scent was so strong I knew she had to be there, so I started looking under the logs and when I didn’t find her there, I ripped the insulation out of the ceiling to see if she was there. She wasn’t, but she might be some day! I also thought I smelled her on a window fan, but she wasn’t there, either, so I got so frustrated I bit it to pieces, which is what I would do to the demon cat if she would just let me catch her!

Mommy said I should share the pictures of what the basement looked like after a night of kitty hunting, so here they are. Aren’t I a good, smart, resourceful girl?

Heh heh heh.... I love the folks that say "Oh, all it'll take is getting scratched by a cat real good and they'll leave 'em alone...."

That strategy might work for SOME GSPs, but sure as heck not all. I suspect mine have something in common with Layla- a cat fighting back would most likely be like pouring gasolene on a fire.

Your Layla sounds like my girls. My boys don't like the cats but don't care as much about the cats as the girls do. Both girls are more hunting babies & will kill the cat if they got a hold of it. My cats stay as far away from the dogs as they can & are NEVER left unattended with the dogs. If I'm not there the dogs are in their crates. My Blaze kills rabbits as often as she can.

Oh, Jodi, you baby is very pretty. I love her dark liver.

thanks!  Jackson seems to have a drive for cats in our neighborhood...and they stay away, but he is run by my long haired chihuahua....my husband says he is a pretty much a cat.  Jackson even lets him clean his ears and eyes etc.    But I would hate to see what would happen if a cat wondering beyond the fence into my backyard!!

Jodi, do you have more pictures of your Jackson? Is that the 1 in the picture by your name? I didn't see parts so wasn't sure whether it was a boy or girl. Very nice coloring though.

That cracks me up ... I'm still laughing. Bo seems to avoid our cats, and they him, when at all possible. They all have their own areas of the house and seem to respect that ... for now. Every now and again he gets an itching to chase the girls, which does not really worry me, since they need the exercise ;p

Our first GSP was about 5 when we got the cat. They would actually lie in wait around corners and do mock attacks on each other but would end up next to each other when they were worn out. The cat has been dead for about 8 years but both of my sons claim that old "Thunderfoot" still runs through the upstairs on occasion. One time Matt heard the bedroom door rattling and opened it and something brushed by him and jumped on the bed. I'm assuming she is a friendly spirit.

That is the funniest story coming from the dog!!

ALthough I would hate to have to clean up that mess.  Our male GSP we had HATED cats, to him they were prey the same as squirrels or any other varmint.  Any stray cat that came near the house was history.  He showed no fear or hesitation whatsoever, he even drug one out into the pond one time,as if to drown it.  That was weird. He was an excellent hunter and we took him out west to hunt pheasants once.  He spied a jackrabbit and couldn't help but try to get it.  Of course he couldn't catch it and he took off after it over the prairie, we could see two dots moving off into the distance, he totally ignored the shock collar.  We thought he was gone for sure, but kept blowing the whistle and came right back.  But we got many pheasant and grouse with him too.  He just couldn't tolerate a cat.

I took the following pictures at dusk, so they aren't the best quality, but here is the crater Layla made below my second story deck, which is the kitty's safe retreat:

She trampled the snow right into water while she was twirling, spinning & barking madly at the kitty on the deck:

Did I mention that the kitty moved to a new, crazy-dog-free home about a MONTH ago?!

Yes, she is definitely focused... apparently not very observant since kitty doesn't live there anymore, but I give her an A for effort! :P To be honest, it keeps the little monster active, busy & out of other trouble (like sneaking over to the neighbor's chicken coop :D )

I know how compulsive they can be. We haven't had any raccoons around since fall but Molly still goies barreling out through the dog door at about 9 p.m. barking like crazy. Then she comes back in like she just saved us all.
