We were just walking through the super market today and decided to check out the dog food section for fun. We came across one that didnt seem to be as terrible as most. I dont know a whole lot about dog nutrition and usually rely on dogfoodanalysis.com to tell me what I need to know but this brand is not listed. So without telling you the brand name I want to list the ingredients and see what everyone thinks. I realize that its by no means top of the line but the price had me interested.

here are the ingredients

Chicken Meal, Chicken, Oatmeal, Dehulled Barley, Brown Rice, Brewers Rice, Chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols - source of vitamin E), Natural chicken flavour, Tomatoes, Whole Dried Egg, Herring Meal, Flaxseed, Brewer’s Yeast, Salmon Oil (source of DHA), Whole Sweet Potatoes, Whole Carrots, Whole Blueberries, Whole Cranberries, Whole Apples, Calcium Carbonate, Potassium Chloride, Dicalcium Phosphate, Sodium Chloride, Chicory Root Extract, Choline Chloride, Vitamins & Chelated Minerals (Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Niacin, Vitamin C, Inositol, D-Calcium Pantothenate, Thiamine Mononitrate, Riboflavin, Beta Carotene, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Folic Acid, Vitamin K, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Zinc Proteinate, Ferrous Sulphate, Iron Proteinate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Proteinate, Copper Sulphate, Manganese Proteinate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Probiotics (Lactobacillus Acidophilus, Lactobacillus Casei, Enterococcus Faecium, Bifidobacterium Thermophilum), DL-Methionine, Glucosamine, Yucca Schidigera, Chondroitin Sulphate, Dried Rosemary.

I like to see Real meat as the first ingredient. So I'd rather see Chicken then Chicken meal but it doesn't look all that bad.

Chicken "meal" comes from the leftover parts in a chicken processing plant.

so like a hotdog?...haha.. I will eat a hot dog every once and a while. Is it to much to ask my dogs to eat a "hot dog" now and then.

Yep, very close to a hot except that the USDA doesn't allow some stuff for human consumption.
Glad to hear Finn and Diets are on the mend.

When Max came off purina puppy chow I had been researching a number of different foods and started him out on Solid Gold millenium. Good product but my first shorthair was fed Pro-plan and did well on that. Over this past summer I switched him over to purina one. He does really well with this product. Nice terd consistency, nice coat, plenty of get up and go. Reasons for the change: Sometimes I found he wasn't interested in eating the solid gold and though Max is a different dog then my last one I saw no radical difference in performance with the solid gold. The reason I picked Purina one is that it had the ingrediants I liked and that it is available in any supermarket.

The food im talking about is a canadian brand. Its "President's Choice Nutrition First" here are some percentages

Crude Protein 23%
Crude Fat 13%
Crude Fibre 4%
Moisture 10%
Omega 6 1.8%
Omega 3 .4%
Glucosamine 350 mg./kg.
Chondroitin 50 mg./kg.

can anyone comment these?

I might give it a try to ease the ol' bank account a little. In the last 2 weeks we spent over $1000 in unexpected vet bills...yikes

I wish Windsor could eat cheaper dog good but he has grain allergies so we have to feed him grain free which is more expensive. And it actually tastes good - I tried it LOL

I think those ingredients look decent....no corn and the first 2 are a meat (even though one is a meat meal)...some people like to get a higher protein but then again you don't do any major competition type events (or I don't recall that you do) so the 23% is probably ok...

I get so confused about the meat meal thing cuz on that website dogfoodanalysis.com when the first ingredient is just meat like chicken they will say something like "even though it is listed first it has a lot of water" so I think it is a thin line between regular meat and meat meal....mine get fed a meat meal listed first and then a meat follows it up like the one you listed above...

We have to do what is best for our dogs and our checkbooks....if I could afford to feed the best of the best I would but I can't...not even for myself....lots of people are doing organic and I can not afford to feed my family that way but we still eat healthy foods...

Dan ... not sure what you consider a good price. We feed TLC. It was recommended by our breeder, is available online with free delivery. The dogs do really well on it. It's about $56 every 5 weeks or so for our two.

It doesn't look bad. I think dog kibbles have come a long way in the past 20 years when a food with those ingredients was somewhat a novelty. Back then Science Diet was cutting edge! There is so much choice now on the shelves.

That said, there's more to consider than a simple list of ingredients. Where do the ingredients come from? Does the company use suppliers that do not use toxic preservatives (because that does not need to be stated on the label)? How much is spent on advertising? How can they offer good quality for a lower price? Which corners are cut so a profit can still be made? Etc.

Main thing is, the dog needs to do well on it. How are the stools? Endurance? Weight? Coat? Unfortunately, long-term effects are not evident until later but then again, dogs lived long lives even before there were expensive premium kibbles.

I only have one dog and can afford to feed Orijen (also Canadian). It's pricey, and whose to say that their claims are true but I like it and Tessa is doing really well on it.

To live without dogs would mean accepting a form of blindness. [Thomas McGuane]

Here is a good site for explaining dog food.

If you read the entire artcile it explains what 'meal' is.

Joce,

How much TLC food to you feed per meal? When I looked at the web site, it seemed expensive..... I go thru a 30lb bag of food in about 10 days!

I'm starting to wonder about the food we feed Windsor - Taste of the Wild - grain free. He gets it once a day, close to 3 cups and then 1/2 can of evangers meat on top with 2 tbspoon yogurt and some raw baby carrots. His digestion seems better than when he was on Nutro Lamb & Rice. Less gas, coat is in real good shape, good stools. But what about Protein - this has 32% meat protein. I can see a high protein diet good for working dogs but this dog gets his play but he's also a "house dog" when we are at work. It's not like he's running all day long in fields or forests. He gets exercise but is too much protein bad for a dog that is not "working" all the time? Could it be why he acts hyper a lot?

Gail -- Bo gets 4 cups a day and Raz gets 3.5 cups. We go through one bag (two bags per box) every nine days or so.

My original post was incorrect ... we buy 2 boxes of TLC about every 5 weeks, so it's more like $133, not $55.
