Just for fun- this is what coyotes will do to lure dogs away. They will approach when the dog's back is turned getting as close as possible. Then when the dog turns around and faces the coyote it will run away to get the dog to give chase. They try to lure them into cover where theres usually another coyote or two or three waiting. They're smart critters.

I have also talked to guys whose intact males have been lured in by a coyote bitch in season only to have the remaining male members of the pack close in on the dog. The bitch is used as bait. The intelligence that requires is pretty scary...

Haven't seen them since Monday, and I'm trying not to be paranoid, but it seems like everytime I see them I am on edge about it for quite some time.

We've lived here for 5 years and it seems that just in the last 2 years I can remember seeing them more often. At least once every couple of months. Sometimes more.

The gun will remain by the door, loaded.

They building anywhere near you? I know when construction happens around here the animals tend to show up in neighborhoods - they don't have any room to roam - at least it's like that in CT - deer are like squirrels in our yard - pests. Plenty of coyotes around too. Red fox and bob cat. Drove up to a red tail hawk taking off with a rabbit the other day. This used to be a rural town where I live - now it's a "burb" that got pretty congested.

No........no construction around us. We live in a pretty rural area, no neighbors for miles. Our house is fairly new, built in 2005. Built right on the river so I'm sure we are taking over their property...

No neighbors...... how nice! Our house is the most rural in town but once out of the driveway we have neighbors. And tons of traffic once you reach the main road. I go a couple miles out of my way through another town on back roads just to go to work. Rush hour is bumper to bumper here and then factor in the school buses that stop at every single house. If I don't time it right, I'm late - which happens ALOT. You must see all sorts of wild life living near the river - that's gotta be nice! We have a river here too with houses on it - very pretty.

You might be seeing them because it has been a long, hard winter. Perhaps the coyotes are exploring potential food sources out of desperation--and are more likely to venture into places where they may have avoided before.

That is so true with the bad winter we have had - there have been a lot more deer strikes around us - they are trying to find food and with the snow all over the place they are now in the road more. So I bet it could be the same with the coyotes - looking for food. We were out to dinner with another couple last night. This woman volunteers at an animal rescue habitat. She was showing me video of the coyote they rescued. Gorgeous! Was tame as a family dog in the video but she said it is still wild and will be released once it's all better. I don't like them killing the pets but I do understand it is their instinct. So we just keep an eye out for them. We also have bobcat running around.

I humbly suggest that you employ the the Three "S" strategy to safeguard your dogs from coyotes.
